Round the Corner is an exhibition space located in Teatro da Trindade, Inatel Foundation property since 1967. Having been once used as a kiosk of newspapers and magazines, the space was underused, reducing itself to a deposit of maintenance materials. The name alludes mainly to the location and architecture of the place, but also shows a commitment to accessibility and proximity, a willingness to encounter, dialogue and sharing. It is intended that this is, in many senses, a place "around the corner". For reasons of transparency and bearing in mind the purpose of opening this space for proposals and different languages, we opted for the opening of an annual selection process for proposals, inviting cultural programmers, curators and artists to conceive, plan and produce a set of exhibitions, thus ensuring the plurality and the diversity of approaches that have been so well received by the public and by national and international art community. The call for applications is done through the publication of a notice in the weekly press and by dissemination via social networks. It has a period of about three months, being usually from July to September, always referring to the following year.

LOCATION

THE TRINDADE THEATRE

The Teatro da Trindade is located in Lisbon, in the Chiado area, parish of Sacramento. It was built in 1866 by Francisco Palha de Lacerda, writer and playwright, with architectural design by Miguel Evaristo de Lima Pinto. In 1962 the FNAT (National Foundation for Joy at Work), the body that preceded the current INATEL Foundation, purchased the building of the Teatro da Trindade. In 1967 remodeling works were carried out, with a project by Maria Jos Salavisa. In the year of 1991 deep works of renovation and restoration of the entire building-were made, creating new dependencies for the administrative services and the stage, dressing rooms and service areas. The rehearsal room was converted into a Studio, which allowed to create a space for the presentation of new aesthetic and experimental plays. A restoration and rehabilitation of the exterior facades was undertaken in 2009, providing also the roof replacement and fitting of support to public areas, returning to the city, in a new bright condition, one of its most emblematic buildings. In 2012 new works of refurbishment of the interior of the theater were made, providing the most modern structures.

VALUES:

At present the artistic practices seem to have a more acute gap between the producer and the public, and that originated a distance which is, for many, unsurpassable, generating remoteness and detachment and affecting as well, in many ways, the mission of the artist and the production/reception of his work. In addition to these factors, it is there is an increasing number of artists but also a more accelerated and prolific production, which complicates the mission of the traditional exhibition spaces, which are insufficient to the verifiable needs. Being a privileged means of perception and re-presenting reality, art has a social role of inestimable value, especially considering the times we are going through. It is therefore of paramount importance to place and relief the artists, because they are the messengers that have as assignment the (difficult) simplification of the more complex issues, translating them into forms more easily apprehensible for people. It is intended that the Round the Corner may be a possible solution to some of these issues, providing particularly for greater accessibility and proximity between production and fruition, while guaranteeing a free access. Having that into account, we have chosen a form of work that is based on a principle of collaboration between the parties involved, reducing costs and optimizing existing resources, for the benefit of all. This is only possible with the responsible involvement of the users, and therefore some guidelines were laid down:

The user is responsible for the financing of its exhibition project. The material required for the exhibition, fund raising and guard, is the responsibility of the user. The production and assembly of the exhibition is the responsibility of the user. The exhibition projects need prior approval from the Inatel Foundation Cultural Direction. Whenever there is the need for these changes must be notified for approval. It is up to the user to ensure the safekeeping of the space during the period of opening to the public. All exhibition material fixing solutions should be agreed with the Cultural Direction of the Inatel Foundation, in order to ensure the integrity of the space and the best exhibition conditions. It is possible to order some tools for assembly (ladder, hammer, etc.) returning the material when no longer necessary. The conservation status of the room must be kept under the same conditions in which it is delivered to the user. The Cultural Direction of the Inatel Foundation is responsible for the communication with general and specialized press. The exhibition is published on the internet via the blog and in social networks. If the production of other graphic supports is needed, the logos of Round the Corner and Inatel Foundation must be inserted.
