Continuing from last week;

Each one of these pillars (kind of with the exception of fasting) has been mentioned that not doing it is disbelief.

Charity (Zakat) -Woe to the polytheists. Theyre the ones who dont give Zakat 41:1 Lit. wael to the polytheists Wael -doesnt mean if a Muslim doesnt give zakat hes a polytheist. Its a trait -Allah describes the disbelievers by actions, so you can reflect and see if you do this -In the life of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) (aka Seerah). Abu Bakr fought against the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula because those tribes abandoned zakat. They didnt say they were non-Muslim, or that they didnt pray, they just refused to pray Zakat. Abu Bakr fought them, won, and they had to pay Zakat -What is Zakat? -Zakat means in Arabic, to grow or to purify. To increase and become pure. -Zakat purifies your wealth from any type of bad transactions or slips that may have entered into it.

-For an hourly employee, you are accountable for your time. You are getting paid for that time, so misusing it is bad. Youre accountable before God. Its kinda like considering stealing. -Zakat is an equalizer. By purifying your wealth, you put bblessing in it, and it causes it to grow. -Zakat does not decrease wealth; it will cause it to increase. -Zakat doesnt belong to you; its the right of the poor person with your money -2 types of Zakat: 1. Zakat Al-Fitr Given at Eid after Ramadan 2. Zakat Al-Mahl Zakat of Money (or Wealth) Given annually

Both have to be given to people. Cant use Zakat to finance a mosque or something

Zakat Al-Fitr Obligation on every man, woman, and child Everyone has to pay by Eid; should pay by the night of Eid Its a measure (sah) or staple food or monetary equivalent, or 4 handfuls (mudd) o Not a weight, its a volume. Some people translate it to 2.2 kilo. Its a volume. So depending on what youre dealing with, the weight will be different (ie 4 scoops of dates vs 4 scoops of rice; different weights) o Should be raw, not cooked, not processed Its given before Eid so that everyone will have food to celebrate Eid. o Hence why its better to give Zakat in your own community So how do we do it here? o Giving monetary equivalent ($10-15 per person) o Best to give straight to IFSA. IFSA gives out food baskets. They collect Ramadan donations, make food baskets, and give them out. Sometimes they even give Superstore gift cards o If you know poor people, you can give it to them yourself. o You can give it to people who distribute it for you (i.e. Imam at Quba mosque) If youre going to give it somewhere else Difference between charity and zakat o Zakat is a specific act of worship; has to be done a certain way, a certain way. o Charity doesnt have conditions: whatever you want, however much you want, etc.

Mistakes people make o Not giving zakat in correct form (i.e. buying medical services) o Intention is off (i.e. giving charity, not Zakat, considering it as Zakat) o Not knowing the difference between charity and zakat Only people who dont have to pay are those who have no money or food in their house to eat. Or if you have to pay rent the next day

Zakat Al-Mahl Different than Zakat Al-Fitr Obligatory payment that you give on your wealth annually if your wealth is above a certain amount of money Conditions: o You have to have a certain amount of constant wealth o A lunar cycle has to pass on it (time it from Ramadan to Ramadan) Only certain types of wealth you pay it on Also right of the poor to your wealth Zakat benchmark is a measure of gold, not cash o ___ grams of gold o Note that the value of gold changes. Calculate price of gold. o Works out to about $5000 (benchmark) o So if a person has this amount constantly in their account for one year, they have to pay 2.5% of whatever they have o So lets say the cash has in-flow and out-flow ($10,000 stowed away, but amount has to be taken out constantly) Since cash fluctuates above and below this benchmark, you wouldnt have to pay Zakat o However, if youre always above this benchmark, you have to pay it Not just about your money; also covers other things. Doesnt include property (clothing, cars, house, etc). Would include things like cash, inventory (whatever your asset value is). You pay it on your inventory (i.e. if you sell clothes, you would calculate it based on the value) livestock, grains, crops, gold, silver. Dont have to pay it on house animals. Zakat of buried treasure is 1/5th immediately. Good to know for those Muslim pirates.

Categories of People for Zakat 1. The poor a. The Faqir in Arabic. b. The poor person can be defined today as a person who is not making enough to pay their necessities.

People who are fighting in the way of Allah a. Volunteer, not getting paid, etc ii. People fighting a despotic army or ruler b. Dont zakat money to organization for organization; give zakat to organization for people

What do you do with a family too proud to accept zakat? Have to find a way to give them money Or just find a family that is willing to accept it

Zakat to non-Muslims? Charity can be given to anyone at anytime and can be anything. Charity does not have restrictions as long as its good However, Zakat has specific rules, so it has to be given to Muslims

How do you let people know youre eligible for Zakat? Go to IFSA, register with IFSA, and do checks
