Students are expected to consult core readings and those by Marx, ideally before the lectures. Other readings, extensive but far from comprehensive, are provided for those who wish to go into particular topics in greater depth. Even further study may be guided by convenors upon student request.

Value and Price

BF

This lecture provides an overview of the course and the material to be covered. Subsequently, it explains the principles of the labour theory of value, focusing on the most important categories in Marxian political economy: value and price. These are followed by the analysis of closely related concepts, especially money, alienation and fetishism. Alternative interpretations of these concepts within Marxian political economy are highlighted, and their differences and potential contributions are examined in detail. This lecture considers Marxist concepts of class, state and modes of production, and the relationships between them. These concepts relate the economic, the political and the historical aspects of Marxian political economy. The study of the relationships between them can illustrate the empirical, historical and political relevance of Marxian approaches. Core Readings: Brenner, R. This lecture examines, first, the Law of the Tendency of the Rate of Profit to Fall (LTRPF), its counter-tendencies, and their empirical implications. Second, the best-known critiques of Marxs value theory, focusing on the Sraffian critique of Marx and the Okishio Theorem. This lecture examines the Marxian analysis of the distribution of value created in production, including the concepts of productive and unproductive labour, commercial capital, and rent. Crisis Theory

ASF

This lecture outlines different aspects of Marxist theories of crisis: underconsumption, overproduction, disproportion, and falling profit rates. These are examined with reference to their respective emphases on production, realisation, distribution, exchange, finance and conflicts between capital and labour, and within the capitalist class, and how the state can intervene at various stages in the process of accumulation, in order to stabilise the economy. Finally, the lecture reviews alternative Marxist accounts of the nature and causes of the current global crisis. Core Readings: Clarke, S. (1994) Marxs Theory of Crisis. London: Macmillan.
