Treasurer The Vice Chancellor Head, Department of Textile Engineering October 08, 2013 Tuition Fee Waiver Policy for Diploma Textile Engineers

Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) has been conducting Diploma in Textile Engineering program in six government-funded textile institutes (annual intake, 80 X 2 shifts X 6 = 960) for the last few years. This is a 4-year program for the students having SSC with science background. However, many of those diploma engineers who thus completed 14 years of schooling are eager to pursue higher education in textile field. Consequently, many universities like Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology and Primeasia University has been enrolling those students into their undergraduate textile programs and some of the universities are also offering credit waiver or tuition fee exemption for such students. To have a competitive advantage over other universities in attracting students from this category, City University has offered a tuition fee waiver for 35 credits (35 @ TK 1700 = TK 59,500) in its undergraduate textile program. However, such students have to attend all the courses thus waived and earn their credits so that the quality of the would-be graduates is not compromised. As discussed, I recommend that tuition fee for the following courses of the BSTE program should be waived during registration if the enrolled student has a diploma in textile engineering from any institutions recognized by BTEB. 1. 2. 3. 4. ENG 101 (3 Credits) ENG 102 (3 Credits) CSE 101 (3 Credits) ECO 221 (3 Credits) 5. 6. 7. 8. ME 101 (2 Credits) TEX 101 (3 Credits) TEX 102 (3 Credits) TEX 202 (4 Credits) 9. TEX 203 (4 Credits) 10. TEX 204 (4 Credits) 11. TEX 207 (3 Credits)

A student must submit documentary evidence of his/her diploma to City University to take advantage of this system. Current students who have diploma in textile engineering and already made their payment for the above mentioned courses should have their payment adjusted in the next semester. Our waiver system got a quick positive response from the diploma engineers and many such students studying in Primeasia University started to enter in our BSTE program by credit transfer. To give a better shape to this waiver system, there should be a clear-cut policy guideline for all concerned, especially for the Accounts Department of our university. City University authority should take necessary steps to disseminate this tuition waiver system through its publications and public media.
