MiCOM M720 Power Quality Monitoring Solutions

Assess your level of Power Quality

In this forever changing world, the Energy Market in its evolution, has drawn new market players trading in electricity. Increased competitiveness of the Power Systems requires optimum technical and financial management of the electrical installations. For this reason, Power Quality assessment is one of the Key issues. ALSTOMs MiCOM M720 Power Quality Monitoring Solutions, provide coherent tools for: Accurately defining the interfaces between the Energy Market players, and Providing detailed information used for network planning and plant optimisation. in comparison to typical curves (eg. CBEMA/ITIC curve). Yearly statistics of PQ data often represent over 1 Gb storage, which require sophisticated Data Base Management tools. The layout of these reports can be produced using predefined templates and may include companies own logos.

For network planning purposes, the utilities and the major consumers need to monitor to stricter limits than the voltage characteristics, known as Planning Levels. These are operational limits and internal Power Quality targets of the utilities. Major Industrial plants use these stricter limits to measure the level of Power Quality at common coupling points and close to the disturbing or sensitive loads, in order to find the optimum plant design. This is increasing the relevance of the investments allowing improved immunity at equipment level, rather than investing in wider unnecessary renovation programmes. More specific legal agreements can be monitored by using some of the planning level limits. Power Quality monitoring system The MiCOM M720 is a comprehensive range of Power Quality Meters, measuring the electrical parameters defining the Power Quality profile of the Network. All the products within the M720 range perform continuous monitoring of power at Interconnection locations.

Power Quality monitoring

Voltage characteristics and planning levels The quality profile of the electrical supply is composed of a set of parameters, defining the limits for both frequency and duration of the supply interruption, this is referred to as Voltage Characteristics, as described in the relevant standards or recommended practices such as IEEE 1159 , EN 50160, NRS 048. Generally, only a percentage of the assessed values are taken into account, (excluded from the computation is a percentage of worst case measurements). This is the x% values found in most of the existing standards (eg. 95% in EN 50160 standard). These rules are used to build up standard contractual agreements between the market players.

MiCOM M721
Light industry and distribution level The MiCOM M721 is ideal for monitoring the parameters quantified by the fixed Power Quality standards, including flicker and up to 50th harmonic (40th for 60Hz). Limited configuration of setpoints is available with the M721 in order to take into account variations of parameters of the standards.

Report generation
Data becomes information Considering the very high number of measurements required, and the specific algorithms involved, it is necessary to transform PQ data into PQ information. This is performed by advanced analysis tools giving Power Quality reports directly linked to the predefined or customised standards. Graphical views are produced such as 3D bar charts, Disdip table, occurrence of voltage dips/sags and interruptions,

Monitoring of the power quality at different network levels

MiCOM M722
Investigation in medium industry and distribution level, transformer technological survey The MiCOM M722 additionally, monitors the inter-harmonics, allowing full configuration of the Power Quality profile in order to carry out investigation of planning levels over the distribution network. While harmonics are present, the measurement of the K-factor is useful to monitor the derating of the transformers caused by heating due to the eddy current loss factor in the transformers. The M722 is fitted with a waveform capture function.

MiCOM M724
The expert - comprehensive investigation at planning level and transmission level The MiCOM M724 is designed for comprehensive investigation of parameters, taking into account the network planning concerns. The Power Quality profiles investigated are fully configurable. This allows technical and financial conclusions to be made relevant to the design of the network. Additionally, to help evaluate how close the parameters are to the values required by the standards. Very short time power quality parameters are stored for further analysis. The M724 is the preferred tool of consulting and Engineering companies, Utilities and Industry network experts.

Associated software
QR Manager QR Manager is a Power Quality analysis software, especially designed, to manage the data issued by MiCOM M720 Power Quality Meters. A whole district can thus be analysed, with a classification of the events, topology-related. In addition to the standard power quality profile, specific power quality reports can be created, in accordance with contractual commitments.

MiCOM M723
Heavy industry and subtransmission level The MiCOM M723 provides a sliding reference tracking capacity used at HV level, smoothing the variations caused by the voltage regulation at transmission level. Monitoring of the Inter-harmonics is also provided. The M723 is more than adequate to look into the Power Quality in heavy industry and on transmission networks. It utilises the limited configurability of the Power Quality Profile.

Power Quality reporting While analysing the measurements campaigns, it is possible to set for each parameter, one or more than one views to be included in the Power Quality reports to be generated. The desired views are then selected as to be integrated in the report, and also customised graphical policies can be added to the layout of the reports. The possible views are : List of Power Quality events Radar spot graphical representation Time and trend curves Graphical 3D histogram Statistical analysis over the assessment period PQ profile super-imposed (DISDIP table, CBEMA/ITIC curve, ...) Comments and electronic picture files can be added to all sections of the reports. For universal data exchange, the format of the reports is directly compatible with WEB format (html, xml), and consequently, allows an easy integration into Internet-based Quality of Service monitoring applications. Filtered Power Quality indices A sharp analysis of the level of Power Quality, may require filtered power quality parameters, in order to match specific contractual agreements. For these purposes, QR Manager allows the creation of new indices, composed with filters applied to gross available parameters. For example, it is possible to create a special index, showing voltage dips, greater than a given duration. This index is given a new naming. The possible filters are : Multi-parameters views Lower/greater than Maximum, minimum value Mean value, quadratic average value Ponderation factor Square root, squaring Equation, sum, integration filter Cumulated probability Flicker Plt calculation Week day/week-end filter

Functional characteristics
General The MiCOM M720 acquires the Voltages and Currents of the network and calculates in real time all the parameters necessary to get an accurate picture of the Power Quality of the network. For monitoring purposes, additional parameters are also provided, allowing to check on-line, the status of the network. This data can be stored in the memory of the instruments, and can be retrieved remotely, through a communication link. On some models, waveform and snapshot capture are also provided. On-line refreshment of the data can be displayed by QR Monitor, showing different values and graphics. Advanced data analysis is given by QR Manager, which analyses the Power Quality data,
