Food DIY How to Make Your Own Everything: sausages to smoked salmon, sourdough to sloe gin, bacon to buns Tim Hayward
For fans of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Heston Blumenthal: the first comprehensive manual for the urban DIY cook
Over recent years, across much of the world, people have started rejecting shopbought food and are getting into making it themselves. The DIY food movement is spreading. But why DIY? Because it's fun, an adventure, thrifty, a great way to get your hands gloriously dirty, and because at a time when skills like baking, preserving and curing are in danger of being lost forever, it's more important than ever to learn how things work. Most importantly, though, when you do it yourself you can make sure that all the food you eat is absolutely delicious. In Food DIY, Tim Hayward will show you: How to make your own butter and cheese, sloe gin, suet pudding and potted lobster. How to smoke, and cure, fish and meats, airdry bresaola and boerwoers, as well as pickle fish, game and vegetables. He'll explain the mysteries of terrines and faggots, bread and buns, as well how to spitroast a whole lamb, make a clam bake in a wheelbarrow, smoke a salmon in a gym locker and deep fry a turkey outdoors. He'll teach you how to make your own takeaway: from delicious Peking duck and fried chicken to doner kebab and your morning cappuccino. Food DIY is the essential modern urban cook's manual. Tim Hayward is a food writer and broadcaster. He is a contributing writer at the Financial Times and a regular contributor to the Guardian 'Word of Mouth' Food Blog and Radio 4 Food Programme, among others. Ammonites and Leaping Fish A Life in Time Penelope Lively

One of our greatest writers addresses ageing, memory, time and a life in the 20th Century

'This is not quite a memoir. Rather, it is the view from old age. And a view of old age itself, this place at which we arrive with a certain surprise ambushed, or so it can seem. One of the few advantages of age is that you can report on it with a certain authority; you are a native now, and know what goes on here.' Taking in old age, the context of one's life and times, memory, reading and writing, and the identifying cargo of possessions two ammonites, a cat, a pair of American ducks and a leaping fish sherd, amongst others this is an elegant, moving and deeply enjoyable memoir by one of our most loved writers.

Penelope Lively is the author of many prizewinning novels and shortstory collections for both adults and children. She has twice been shortlisted for the Booker Prize: once in 1977 for her first novel, The Road to Lichfield, and again in 1984 for According to Mark. She later won the 1987 Booker Prize for her highly acclaimed novel Moon Tiger. Her other books include Family Album, which was shortlisted for the 2009 Costa Novel Award. She was appointed CBE in the 2001 New Year's Honours List, and DBE in 2012. Penelope Lively lives in London.

Michelangelo His Epic Life Martin Gayford

A new biography of Michelangelo by the acclaimed author of Constable in Love and The Yellow House

There was an epic sweep to Michelangelo's life. At 31 he was considered the finest artist in Italy, perhaps the world; long before he died at almost 90 he was widely believed to be the greatest sculptor or painter who had ever lived (and, by his enemies, to be an arrogant, uncouth, swindling miser). For decade after decade, he worked near the dynamic centre of events: the vortex at which European history was changing from Renaissance to Counter Reformation. Few of his works including the huge frescoes of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, the marble giant David and the Last Judgment were small or easy to accomplish. Like a hero of classical mythology such as Hercules, whose statue Michelangelo carved in his youth he was subject to constant trials and labours. In Michelangelo Martin Gayford describes what it felt like to be Michelangelo Buonarroti, and how he transformed forever our notion of what an artist could be.

Martin Gayford has been art critic of the Spectator and the Sunday Telegraph. He is currently Chief European art critic for Bloomberg. Among his publications are: The Yellow House: Van Gogh, Gauguin and Nine Turbulent Weeks in Arles, The Penguin Book of Art Writing, of which he was coeditor, Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud, and contributions to many catalogues. He lives in Cambridge with his wife and two children. Praise for Constable in Love: 'Brilliant, wholly fascinating. I can't recommend this delightful book too highly' Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday 'Engaging, cunning, agreeable and alert to the vagaries of human behaviour' Literary Review

The Dogs of Littlefield Suzanne Berne

Discontented lives and dog poisonings: The Dogs of Littlefield is a wonderfully well drawn and wry exploration of the darker side of suburbia from an Orange Prize-winning author

Had Barbara Pym written about suburban New England in the 21st century, she might have focused on Littlefield, Massachusetts, recently named one of the Ten Best Places to Live in America. Full of psychologists and college professors, Littlefield is proud of its fine schools, its girls' soccer teams, its leafy streets and quaint village centre where George Washington once spent the night in what is now a yoga studio. In fact, a sociologist from the University of Chicago, Dr. Clarice Watkins, has moved to Littlefield for a year to study the elements of 'good quality of life'. Yet, no sooner has she arrived, than someone begins poisoning the town dogs. Are the poisonings in protest to an offleash proposal for Baldwin Park the subject of much town debate or the sign of a deeper disorder? Why, for instance, is Clarice's lovely neighbour Margaret Downing so unhappy and her nice husband so frightened? Why do children keep pulling fire alarms at the middle school? And who is spraypainting ominous graffiti all over town could it be the young bearded Pakistani who bakes doughnuts every morning at the Forge Caf? A darkly comic novel that examines the relationships between men and women as well as the attempts of a community to remain a 'village' amid global disturbance, The Dogs of Littlefield is a wry reminder that the world's large concerns are built of small ones, and that yearning for something 'more' is the one characteristic shared by us all.

Suzanne Berne's first novel, A Crime in the Neighbourhood, won the 1999 Orange Prize. She is also the author of A Perfect Arrangement, The Ghost at the Table and Missing Lucile. Suzanne Berne lives with her husband and two daughters near Boston.

Montebello Robert Drewe

A thought-provoking and evocative reminder of Robert Drewe's place as one of Australia's finest literary voices

'Listen to me,' my mother says. 'They've let off an atom bomb today. Right here in W.A. Atom bombs worry the blazes out of me, and I want you at home.' In the sleepy and conservative 1950s the British began a series of nuclear tests in the Montebello archipelago off the west coast of Australia. Even today, few people know about the three huge atom bombs that were detonated there, but they lodged in the consciousness of the young Robert Drewe and would linger with him for years to come. In this moving, frank yet humorous sequel to The Shark Net, Drewe travels to the Montebellos to visit the territory that has held his imagination since childhood. In the aftermath of both manmade and natural events that have left a permanent mark on the Australian landscape and psyche from nuclear tests and the mining boom to shark attacks along the coast Drewe examines how comfortable and familiar terrain can quickly become a site of danger, and how regeneration and love can emerge from chaos and loss.

Robert Drewe was born in Melbourne and grew up on the West Australian coast. His novels and short stories, as well as his prizewinning memoir The Shark Net, have been widely translated and adapted for film, television, radio and theatre around the world. He was literary editor at The Australian before he began writing fiction, and a twotime recipient of the Walkley Award for excellence in journalism. 'A beautifully crafted book . . . it switches effortlessly between travel literature, reportage, local history, nature writing and film and literature criticism . . . a perfectly integrated work of art. For more than thirty years, his faith in life was grounded on two indisputable principles: his daughters' exceptional beauty and talents and the historical resonance of a carriage house built by his grandfather. Mr Lynch's Holiday Catherine O'Flynn

A comic and charming new novel by the bestselling and prize-winning author of What Was Lost and The News Where You Are

'I'm looking forward to seeing you and Laura and getting my first taste of "abroad".' Eamonn Lynch stares at the letter announcing the imminent arrival of his father, Dermot. His first thought is: I'll make an excuse, I'll put him off. But it is too late. Dermot is already here, in southern Spain, and soon he'll discover that Eamonn lives in an unfinished building site; that Laura's left him; and that it'll be just the two of them, father and son, for two long, hot weeks. Dermot doesn't entirely recognize his son; how can he stay quite so long in bed? And where is Laura? Eamonn doesn't seem to know quite what to make of his father's arrival. On the other hand, his neighbours pushy and domineering Roger and Cheryl, smug but disillusioned property developers Becca and Ian see in Dermot a respite from themselves. Swept up in the British expats' ceaseless barbecuing and bickering, both father and son slowly discover the truth about each other and the family past. But at the same time they uncover a shocking, unacknowledged secret at the heart of this defiant but beleaguered community. Mr Lynch's Holiday is a very funny and moving story about the clash of generations; about how families break apart and come together again; about how living "abroad" can feel less like a long holiday and more of a life sentence.

Catherine O'Flynn was born in 1970 and raised in Birmingham, the youngest of six children. Her parents ran a sweet shop. She worked briefly in journalism, then at a series of shopping centres. She has also been a web editor, a postwoman and a mystery shopper.

Expo 58 Jonathan Coe

Good-looking girls and sinister spies: a naive Englishman at loose in Europe in Jonathan Coe's brilliant comic novel

London, 1958: minor civil servant Thomas Foley is plucked out of his desk job at the Central Office of Information to help man the British stand at the fabulous new International Exhibition in Brussels. His job is to keep an eye on The Britannia, the typical British pub which is being built to form the heart of the exhibit a task for which he's been chosen because his father was a publican and his mother came from Belgium. Leaving his wife and baby, and his widowed mother, behind in dreary south London, Thomas finds Expo 58 a complete eyeopener: goodlooking girls, European sophistication, American enthusiasm, and some seriously interesting cultural events. Not even the increasingly disturbing news of the interest being shown in his wife by their creepy neighbour back home makes Thomas want to go back. Expo seems to represent the future, for the new postWar world and perhaps for Thomas himself until events take a distinctly odd turn when he's asked to take on a secret task which quickly gets out of hand and turns his life upside down. Soon he has to decide where his public and private loyalties lie. Returning to the comedy of What a Carve Up! and The Rotters' Club, Jonathan Coe's new novel offers a fresh and invigorating portrait of Britain and Europe after the war: struggling to find its identity, torn between tantalizing visions of the future and the certainties of the past all of it mirrored in the life of a single, rather bemused civil servant.

Jonathan Coe was born in Birmingham in 1961. He is the author of nine novels, the latest The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim (2010), all of them available in Penguin. His biography of the novelist B. S. Johnson, Like a Fiery Elephant, won the 2005 Samuel Johnson Prize for the best nonfiction book of the year. He lives in London with his wife and two daughters.

The Bucket Memories of an Inattentive Childhood Allan Ahlberg

One of Britain's best-loved children's authors tells the heart-warming story of his adoption and childhood in the Black Country

'My mother, who was not my mother, I see her now, her raw red cleaner's hands twisting away at her apron as she struggled to speak. Adoption was a shameful business then in many people's eyes, the babies being mostly illegitimate. Better not speak of it.' Allan Ahlberg was adopted as a baby. In 1938 he was picked up in London by his new mother and taken back to Oldbury in the Black Country. Now one of the most successful children's book writers in the world, in The Bucket he describes an oddly enchanted childhood lived out in an industrial town during the 1940s, in conditions which today we might describe as 'deprived'. He writes of a father in overalls smelling of wood shavings and oil, of a tough and fiercely protective mother who cries when he discovers that he is adopted, of life assurance policies ('6 if the child dies under age 3') and fearsome bacon slicers, of halfremembered trips to his mother's sister's grave and to the bluebell woods. And of his first days at school: 'Allan could do much better. He is most inattentive and dreamy at times' (school report, December 1946). Using a mix of prose and poetry, supported by new drawings by his daughter Jessica and old photographs, The Bucket retrieves a childhood which lovers of Ahlberg's classic picturebooks The Baby's Catalogue and Peepo! might feel they have glimpsed before but which are now exquisitely brought to life.

Born in Croydon but brought up by his adopted parents in the Black Country town of Oldbury, Allan Ahlberg held jobs as a gravedigger, postman and plumber's mate before becoming a teacher. He taught for ten years before collaborating with his wife Janet on a series of muchloved, now classic children's picture books. He lives in Bath, and his daughter Jessica is now an illustrator like her mother.

'Allan Ahlberg has a string of children's classics to his name' Nicolette Jones, Guardian

Great Britain's Great War Jeremy Paxman

The renowned broadcaster and bestselling author's magnificent history of the First World War, accompanied by a 5-part flagship BBC TV series to mark its 100th Anniversary

What was life actually like for the British during the First World War? The images we have of the First World War a Tommy buried in the mud of the Western Front; the pointing finger of Lord Kitchener; the memorial poppies of Remembrance Day all reinforce the idea that it was, in the end, an utterly pointless waste of life, and very little more. So why did we fight it so willingly and how did we endure it for so long? Using a wealth of firsthand source material, Jeremy Paxman brings vividly to life the daytoday experience of the British over the entire course of the war, from politicians, newspapermen, campaigners and Generals, to Tommies, factoryworkers, nurses, wives and children, capturing the whole mood and morale of the nation and explaining how life and identity in Britain were utterly transformed, not always for the worse, by this experience. Rich with personalities, surprises and ironies, this broad narrative history paints a picture of courage and confusion, doubts and dilemmas, and is written with Jeremy Paxman's characteristic flair for storytelling, wry humour and pithy observation.

Jeremy Paxman is a renowned broadcaster, awardwinning journalist and the bestselling author of seven works of nonfiction, including The English, The Political Animal and Empire.

'Paxman is witty, incisive, acerbic and opinionated . . . In short, he carries the whole thing off with panache bordering on effrontery' Sunday Times on Empire 'He writes with wit and penetration, and every page can be read with relaxed pleasure' Spectator on Empire

Sense and SensibilityPride and PrejudiceMansfield ParkEmma Northanger AbbPersuasionLady Susan Few novelists have conveyed the subtleties and nuances of their own social milieu with the wit and insight of Jane Austen. Through her vivacious and spirited heroines and their circle, she paints vivid portraits of English middleclass life as the eighteenth century came to a close. Each of the novels is a love story and a story about marriage marriage for love, for financial security, for social status. But they are not mere romances; ironic, comic and wise, they are masterly studies of the society Jane Austen observed. The seven novels in this volume contain some of the most brilliant, dazzling prose in the English language.

Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction set among the gentry have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature. She was born in Steventon rectory on 16th December 1775. She wrote from a young age and Pride and Prejudice was begun when she was twentytwo years old. Love, Nina Despatches from Family Life Nina Stibbe

The laugh-out-loud story of the trials and tribulations of a very particular family

We're considering cancelling the milkman and getting cartons with the main shop. AB is trying to put us off, saying we should support the milkman otherwise there might not be any milkmen.

In the 1980s Nina Stibbe wrote letters home to her sister in Leicester describing her trials and triumphs as a nanny to a London family. There's a cat nobody likes, a visiting dog called Ted Hughes (Ted for short) and suppertime visits from a local playwright. Not to mention the two boys, their favourite football teams, and rude words, a very broadminded mother and assorted nice chairs. From the mystery of the unpaid milk bill and the avoidance of nuclear war to mealtime discussions on pie filler, the greats of English literature, swearing in German and sexually transmitted diseases, Love, Nina is a wonderful celebration of bad food, good company and the relative merits of Thomas Hardy and Enid Blyton.

Nina Stibbe grew up in Leicestershire. At 19 she had a brief spell in France before moving to London. In London she became a nanny, then a student and then worked in publishing. In 2002 she moved to Cornwall. She now lives in Truro with her partner, their two children and seven guinea pigs. 'Nina Stibbe is the funniest new writer to arrive in years. Hundred Days The End of the Great War Nick Lloyd

The brutal, heroic and extraordinary final days of the First World War

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent. The Armistice, which brought the Great War to an end, marked a seminal moment in modern European and World history. Yet the story of how the war ended remains littleknown. In this compelling and groundbreaking new study, Nick Lloyd examines the last days of the war and asks the question: how did it end? Beginning at the heralded turningpoint on the Marne in July 1918, Hundred Days traces the epic story of the next four months, which included some of the bloodiest battles of the war. Using unpublished archive material from five countries, this new account reveals how the Allies British, French, American and Commonwealth managed to beat the German Army, by now crippled by indiscipline and ravaged by influenza, and force her leaders to seek peace.

Nick Lloyd was educated at the University of Birmingham and is Senior Lecturer in Defence Studies at King's College London, based at the Joint Services Command & Staff College in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire. He specializes in British military and imperial history in the era of the Great War and is the author of two books, Loos 1915 (2006), and The Amritsar Massacre: The Untold Story of One Fateful Day (2011).

The staggering rise and fall of Ireland's richest man

A few years ago, Sean Quinn was ranked among the two hundred richest people in the world, with a personal fortune of some $6 billion. Today he is bust, and his businesses have been taken from him. His efforts to keep his assets from his creditors have seen him sent to jail for contempt of court. And that battle has caused perhaps the most intense and emotive debate over the merits of a single Irishman since Roy Keane left Saipan. How did it all happen? In Citizen Quinn, Ian Kehoe and Gavin Daly trace the remarkable life of the 'simple farmer's son' who made most of his money through guts and graft long before the excesses of the Celtic Tiger, who brought economic vibrancy to a depressed border region, and who then lost it all through a disastrous move into the insurance business and a multibillioneuro gamble on the shares of the world's most toxic bank. Drawing on exclusive sources close to Quinn, his businesses and his creditors, they tell the most extraordinary single story of the Irish crash.

The Curve From Freeloaders into Superfans: The Future of Business Nicholas Lovell
A breakthrough business idea: Chris Anderson's The Long Tail meets Seth Godin's Purple Cow

The Curve is a new way of understanding business. For most of the last century, companies strived to control costs and shift as many units as possible. The Internet has changed everything: the price of many products has dropped to zero, but you can now forge direct relationships with a vast global audience. The Curve means accepting that millions of people now expect your product for free because a small number of high spenders are enough to build a profitable business. In games, free is the norm, but some fans now spend hundreds or thousands of dollars while playing a single title. That means the focus is no longer how many units you can sell. It is how you can satisfy those users who are happy to pay enormous amounts of money for things they value. The Curve has already transformed areas like music, books and film, and is rapidly spreading to the physical world as 3D printing becomes reality and the spectre of casual piracy hits businesses of every kind. With stories drawn from cuttingedge artists, videogames and more, The Curve shows you how to forge relationships with your biggest fans and sustain longterm success.

Nicholas Lovell helps companies make money from the transformative power of the internet. His blog, GAMESbrief, is read by those seeking to learn how digital is transforming gaming and how to apply that knowledge to other industries. His clients have included Atari, Firefly, nDreams and Square Enix (creators of Tomb Raider), as well as Channel 4 and IPC Media. He is a columnist for Gamasutra, a contributor to the Wall Street Journal, and his articles have appeared in TechCrunch and Wired. He lives in London.

The Frackers The Inside Story of the Energy Revolution Gregory Zuckerman
The riveting, untold story of the tycoons behind the new gas mining controversy

The Frackers is a riveting narrative of how a group of risktakers ushered in a new energy age. These individuals transformed the economic, environmental and geopolitical course of the US and the world, making a fortune in the process. It's a saga that has unfolded on barren rocky fields, in the cluttered pickup trucks of visionary geologists, and in Wall Street boardrooms. US oil and gas output is up about twenty per cent since 2007, making the country the world's fastest growing energy producer. Daily production is expected to hit ten million barrels by the end of 2015, equal to what Saudi Arabia currently produces. But some of the very drilling methods that have been a boon to consumers and businesses, such as fracking, also have brought potential environmental danger. A debate is heating up about how serious the dangers are and whether the individuals at the vanguard of the movement will be remembered as much for their environmental impact as the remarkable blessings they've brought.

Gregory Zuckerman is a senior writer at the Wall Street Journal. He pens the widely read 'Heard on the Street' column and writes about hedge funds, investing, and other Wall Street topics. Zuckerman appears on CNBC twice a week to explain complex trades. He is a twotime winner of the Gerald Loeb Award for coverage of the credit crisis, the demise of WorldCom, and the collapse of hedge fund Amaranth Advisors.

Finish Big How Great Entrepreneurs Exit Their Companies on Top Bo Burlingham
The bestselling author of Small Giants returns with an original guide to exiting your company successfully and gracefully

Bo Burlingham's book Small Giants became an instant classic for its original take on a common business problem how to handle the pressure to grow. It used deeplyresearched entrepreneurship stories to provide fresh insight into what really makes a great small business. Now Burlingham returns with a look at an even more common problem how to leave your company gracefully. Seeking to understand what makes a good exit, he interviewed dozens of owners who have sold or bequeathed their companies and distilled nine key lessons for success. For example, Ray Pagano turned down an initial offer for his 28yearold company that manufactured casings for security cameras in favour of making the business more efficient and profitable. The effort paid off when he sold his newly improved company at the bottom of a recession for four times the original offer. His experience shows how planning ahead for your exit will make all the difference. Through stories like Pagano's, Burlingham offers an inspirational and enlightening guide through one of the most common and stressful processes every business owner must face.

Bo Burlingham is the author of Small Giants: Companies That Choose to be Great Instead of Big, a finalist for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year in 2006. An editor at large at Inc., he has also written for Esquire, Harper's, Mother Jones, and The Boston Globe, among other publications.
