Introduction to Exponents Part 1 After the activity online today I now have a brief understanding of exponents.

I already knew that it meant to multiply the larger number by itself a certain amount of times; the little number. I knew very few about exponent before. Writing Exponents I now understand that there are three ways to write exponents. Example. 23. 2x2x2. 8. The exponent and base is equal to eight. First you multiply two by two to get four then you multiply four by two in order to get eight. Repeated Multiplication I also learned another way to show repeated multiplication; little blocks or circles doubling every time the multiplication is repeated. An example is there would be two blocks, then they were multiplied by two and now there is four blocks. Powers I also learned the meaning of powers. They indicate the repeated multiplication of the same factor. The base is the factor being multiplied by. The exponent is the amount of times the base is multiplied by itself.

Questions 1. What is a base? A base is the factor being multiplied by. 2. What is a power? A power indicates the repeated multiplication of the same factor. 3. What does a base and power (exponent) tell you to do? A base and power tells you to multiply the base the number of times (the exponent) 4. What is a power a shortcut to? A calculator for an example the number is 2-3 5. How could you use geometry to describe squaring or cubing a number? If there is 22 you have three circles then you double the amount of circles to get 4 circles.

Introduction to Exponents Part 3 Expanded Form 24= 2x2x2x2 2-4= x x x 1. What do you get when you add x by x? x+x 2. What do you get when you subtract x by x? 0 3. What do you get when you multiply x by x? 2x 4. What do you get when you divide x by x? 1/x 5. What do you get when you multiply x by x by x? 3x

6. What about x by x by x by x by x? 4x 7. What do you get when you multiply x^2 by x? 3x 8. What about when you multiply x^2 by x^3? 5x 9. What about when you multiply x^4 by x^6? 10x 10. Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you multiply same bases. x z y y = x + z= a 1. What about when you multiply x^4 by x^2? 6x 2. What do you get when you divide x^5 by x^3? x2 3. What about when you divide x^6 by x? xxxxxx x5 x 4. Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you divide same bases. example: 232= 222 5. What do you get when you square x^3? xxx= 3x 1. What do you get when you square x^4? xxxx= x4+x4= x8 2. What do you get when you cube x^2? xxxxxx = x6 3. What do you get when you raise x^3 to the fourth power? xxx xxx xxx xxx= x12 4. What do you get when you raise x^2 to the fifth power? xx xx xx xx xx x10 5. Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you raise a base with an exponent by an exponent. take the exponent and write it out the amount of times (squared)
