THURMAN FALL FARM TOUR, OCTOBER 12: Agriculturists living, loving and sharing their regional heritage Thurman farmers and friends will celebrate the heritage of coaxing a living from fields and forests during the annual Thurman Fall Farm Tour, a self-guided visit to sites all over this small mountain town just ten minutes from Adirondack Northway exit 23 (Warrensburg). These are not back-yard hobby farmers, but serious professionals dedicated to the art of farming in an area that was settled by farmers and lumbermen in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During the Fall Farm Tour, todays farmers will open their barn and sugarhouse doors to welcome visitors for tours, talks, demonstrations and the ever-popular tasting and shopping for farm goods. Theyll lead walks into certified tree farms and sugarbushes, or introduce guests to barnyard denizens and their quirky personalities and habits, and pile onto a hay wagon for a pasture visit. Most of the sites exhibit palpable ties to the past. When Sheila Flanagan and Lorraine Lambiase pack up a shipment of Nettle Meadow Farms artisan cheese, they might well think of Katie Bennett, who, an old newspaper article notes, one year in the 1920s churned one ton of butter when she and her husband farmed there. A mile to the south, Gary Martin thinks of his 7th greatgrandfather, Caleb Reynolds when he starts up his band saw mill at Martins Lumber; by one historians account, Reynolds was owner of the first sawmill in Thurman, on the Glen Creek, near Nettle Meadow Farm. Caleb probably never heard the word sustainability, which is the byword at Martins Lumber, but the bond of lumbering spans the generations between them. Gary knows that, although with different equipment, his challenges and goals are much the same as his ancestor. And farther down the road, Mike Hill and Ralph Senecal of Valley Road Maple Farm tap some of the same maples that yielded sap to Thurman syrup producer Hollis Combs, a local legend who began tapping maples as a boy, helping his father, and continued into his early 90s. At nearby Whitefields Farm, Don and Michelle grow all-natural vegetables and poultry the old-fashioned way, basing their operation in a large stone structure that was built to serve as a stable for the renowned Sun Canyon Ranch Resort. You can almost picture the wranglers lounging in the shade of the roofs overhang there. At Toad Hill Maple Farm, Randy and Jill Galusha continually expand their sugarbush for sap to feed their new energy-efficient sugarhouse, outfitted with cutting-edge technology. Randys great-grandfather farmed that land. Did he make syrup, too? Yes, Randy says. We found one of his old wooden buckets, all rotted out, and the remains of an old stone arch where he would have boiled sap. Charles Wallace, too, boils on family property, still working with his dad, Jim, who started the operation now called Hidden Hollow Maple Farm. Other sites along the Fall Farm Tour lay claim to a bit of history, too the Thurman Quilt Show at town hall, where local quilters using new fabric and modern sewing machines mirror the art of their great-grandmothers, who salvaged fabric from worn-out clothing to piece together decorative bed linens. Some heritage quilts will be shown, too.As much a part of local heritage as any piece of real estate in town, is the tradition of hospitality, and the tour offers that in abundance. Guests coming into town will find at each major entrance to Thurman, a manned Welcome Tent to provide maps, directions, and answers to questions. The maps will be complemented by arrow signs at nearly every intersection, directing guests to the various sites, including the pancake breakfast* at Valley Road Maple Farm, served 9 1 and the Fire Company chicken barbecue at Toad Hill Maple Farm from noon to 5 p.m. The day of festivities will end with the drawings for two raffles, one a handmade double quilt made and donated by Avis Russell of Thurman, and the other a post and beam garden shed frame made and donated by Andy LeBlanc of Barn Works, a barn restoration business in Indian Lake. Tickets will be sold at sites listed here with the TIX designation. For more information, visit www.ThurmanFallFarmTour.com , or phone 518.623.9595.

CAMBRIDGE FIREHOUSE FUND TAG SALE- he Cambridge NY Firehouse Fund is seeking donations of goods to sell at the upcoming Village Wide Tag Sale, October 12, 2013. We are using this event as a kick-off fundraiser for the Firehouse Fund. Search through your cluttered attics and basements to find gently used items that you no longer love, and consider giving them a new home. Recycle your gently used furniture, housewares, books, art and tools, along with clothing & craft supplies. No large appliances please. We are accepting goods at the Cambridge Train Passenger Depot, Broad Street in Cambridge, at set times only. The drop off schedule will be Friday evenings from 5 pm to 8pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to 11am, beginning Friday September 27. Contact us if you can't drop off at these times and we'll arrange something. The Cambridge NY Firehouse Fund is coordinated by a volunteer group working to raise funds for a new firehouse in Cambridge. We have outgrown our current firehouse and it no longer meets safety standards required. There is an urgent need for a larger, safer space for our volunteer firefighters and equipment. Please help by giving goods, money and volunteering your time. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 1st in the White Creek Town offices, everyone is welcome and we are always looking for volunteers and ideas. Contact us by e-mail at info@cambridgenyfirehousefund.org or by phone at 518-677-8196, please leave a message. Visit our website (cambridgenyfirehousefund.org) for more information about the firehouse project, and like us on facebook to be kept up-to-date on any news.
