UNIT RATIONALE
This unit is foundation unit that discusses the history of popular music from the 1950s to recent times.

UNIT DESCRIPTION
This foundation unit is of significant in its relationship to all practical areas within the Bachelor of Music. It is intended to introduce students from Classical, Contemporary, Theatre and Audio programs to elements from each of these genres and enhance the level of understanding between these idiosyncratic groups. Foundations of Popular Contemporary Music is an overview of Western popular music from the 1950s to the present day, including a selected study of the sociological and political events that influenced popular music trends during the twentieth century. Particular attention is given to the study and analysis of primary source materials in the form of musical analysis of the musical forms relevant to this period. This unit also provides students with a comprehensive grounding for further theoretical study, through the revision of the basic principles and an introduction to the main elements of Contemporary Popular Music.

Description Choose one of the following questions to answer. On the class website you may download a template to assist you in answering the question. 1. Why did rock start in 1955? 2. What was the influence of disco on popular music? 3. Did the Beatles or the Rolling Stones have more impact on the course of popular music? Your document should adhere to AIM Style as defined by the AIM Style Guide (available from your MyAIM login and in the Library). Information from a source (book, journal article, website, newspaper article etc.) must be cited and listed in the bibliography. AIM uses Harvard (AIM 2012) Style (outlined in the AIM Style Guide).

Assessment 2: Listening Examination (10%)


Description A final examination of 75 minutes duration will occur in Week 12. This will include a listening examination of 20 minutes duration that will draw on examples taken from the G1FP1 listening list.

Assessment 3: Written Examination (50%)


Description A final examination of 75 minutes duration will occur in Week 12. This will include a written examination of 55 minutes duration.
