UNIT RATIONALE
This unit is foundation unit that discusses the history of popular music from the 1950s to recent times.
UNIT DESCRIPTION
This foundation unit is of significant in its relationship to all practical areas within the Bachelor of Music. It is intended to introduce students from Classical, Contemporary, Theatre and Audio programs to elements from each of these genres and enhance the level of understanding between these idiosyncratic groups. Foundations of Popular Contemporary Music is an overview of Western popular music from the 1950s to the present day, including a selected study of the sociological and political events that influenced popular music trends during the twentieth century. Particular attention is given to the study and analysis of primary source materials in the form of musical analysis of the musical forms relevant to this period. This unit also provides students with a comprehensive grounding for further theoretical study, through the revision of the basic principles and an introduction to the main elements of Contemporary Popular Music.

By completion of this unit a student will: a) Demonstrate an understanding of different genres, styles and innovations in western popular music from 1955 to the early 21st Century. b) Discuss contributions of the major figures of the period. c) Identify significant compositions of the period as contained in the listening list. d) Contextualise Australian rock within a global context.
