RESTAURANT CHAINS IN THE COUNTRY
Alfred, NY, July 2009- College students from earlier times
may recall a one-size fits all college dining experience that
included little flavor and long cafeteria lines. Alfred State
College students can’t relate. That’s because ASC student meal
plans include dining options at three of the top 10 restaurant
chains in the country, based on a recent survey of the top 400
chain establishments published by Restaurants and
Institutions Magazine in the July 2009 issue.
The three restaurants, KFC (3), Pizza Hut (6), and Taco
Bell (8) all have outlets on the Alfred campus. They are
operated by Auxiliary Campus Enterprises and Services
(ACES) Dining Services.
“We were one of the first campuses in the SUNY system to
pursue relationships with brand-name restaurants,” Karen
Canne, Director of Dining Services, explained. “We’re
completely focused on giving our student customers choice and
flexibility in dining. Our meal plans allow students to use their
meal plans in any of these top restaurants, as well as any of
the four other cafés on campus.”
ACES also offers a Friendly’s Café, a Freshens/Pretzel logic
operation, as well as the ACES created concepts, The Peach Pit
Café and The Exit West Café.
When the fall 2009 semester begins in August, students
will have a new choice for all-you-care-to-eat dining. Central
Dining Hall will now include The Terrace, a food-court style
offering that will provide even more customization and
flexibility for student diners.

Stripping Old Finish From
Hardwood Floor
Q: I’d like to refinish the

hardwood floor in our upstairs
common area. I’m pretty sure it
was installed when the house was
built. The floor has some sort of
shiny finish (or it used to be shiny),
though I’m not sure what it is. Will
this matter when I strip this finish
off? Do you have any tips to speed
the process? -- Mel in Knoxville,
Tenn.
A: Knowing what type of finish is
on the floor will help you choose
the right type of stripper, if you
intend to use a chemical stripper
rather than sand the finish off.
Head up to the area with a few
cotton swabs, some denatured
alcohol and a bit of lacquer thinner.
To test the finish, rub a cotton ball
soaked with the alcohol on a small
area. If the finish starts to come
off, then it’s probably shellac. If it
doesn’t come off, soak a different
cotton ball with lacquer thinner and
rub a different area. If the finish
comes off here, you’re dealing
with a lacquer finish. If neither
solvent brings up the finish, it’s
probably polyurethane varnish.
This is important because is when
you go to the home-improvement
store to buy a chemical stripper,
you’re going to need to choose the
one that works best with the finish
on your floor. You’ll also need a
rinsing solvent that’s compatible
with the type of stripper you
choose, to neutralize the chemical
afterward.

2009 WILLOW CREEK TRIATHLON
To Benefit The Disabled American Veterans
"The organization and volunteers were wonderful.  The overall male winner – Rosenkrantz –
is an accomplished tri-athlete who is a 5-time ironman, having competed in over 100 events. He
said that the venue was spectacular and the course was well marked and organized." – Lyle

It is comments like this that drive the committee to work diligently on the 4th annual Willow
Creek Triathlon to benefit Disabled American Veterans. The triathlon will be held on August 1st,
2009. Title sponsors of the event are Bradford Area Hospital and Northwest Savings Bank. The
money raised by this non-profit organization is donated to the Disabled American Veterans
Transportation Network. The transport vans purchased with your donations allow DAV and
Auxiliary volunteers to drive Veterans to and from VA hospitals and clinics. The money donated
to the Triathlon
stays within the
local area. To date,
over $18,000 has
been donated to the
McKean County
DAV Chapter #72
and Warren County
DAV Chapter #75,
collectively.
This sprint triathlon is run on one of
the most scenic routes in the area. The event
begins in Allegany State Park in New York at
the Quaker Lake beach house. Quaker Lake
is a manmade lake covering 268 acres. The
lake is ~40 feet deep and has a 3.8 mile
undeveloped shoreline.
After the rules meeting at 8:30AM, a
blessing is offered for participants,
spectators and volunteers. A moving
rendition of the Star Spangled Banner
reminds us of our debt to our fore-fathers,
the first in a long line of veterans. Dividing the participants into roughly equal groups for the
start of the race, the Race Director propels the flights of swimmers into the cold morning water
at 5-6 minute intervals. A 300 yard swim around the lifeguard dock and back to the beach at
Quaker Lake initiates the 18 mile run for the Thom Maholic Memorial Awards.

Cash for Clunkers
The government’s Cash For Clunkers program can help get gas
guzzlers off the road and shave thousands of dollars off the price of a
new vehicle.
Passenger vehicles that are traded in must be newer than 1984 models
and get less than 18 mpg. For certain trucks, the model year must be
2001 and 15 mpg. The vehicle must be drivable. You can’t take an old
vehicle from a junkyard and use it to trade in. All vehicles that are traded
in are to be scrapped to get them off the road.
Here are some specifics for the program:
• You must buy your new vehicle between July 1 and Nov. 1, 2009.
• The new vehicle must cost less than $45,000.
• You must have been the owner of record of the old vehicle for a
minimum of one year.
• If you trade in a passenger car that gets 18 mpg or less, the new vehicle
must get 10 mpg more to qualify for the $4,500 voucher.
Just in time
• If you trade in a passenger car that Stannards Road • Wellsville, New York
gets 18 mpg or less, the new vehicle
must get 4 mpg more to qualify for a
$3,500 voucher.
• If you trade in a pickup or SUV (including a minivan) that gets 18 mpg
or less and you buy a similar vehicle that gets 2 mpg more, you qualify
for a $3,500 voucher.
• If you trade in a pickup or SUV (including a minivan) that gets 18 mpg
or less, your new vehicle must get at least 5 mph higher to qualify for a
$4,500 voucher.
• Trucks and vans weighing between 6,000 and 8,500 pounds that get 15
mpg qualify for vouchers of between $3,500 and $4,500.
• Finally, if an older vehicle has a trade-in value greater than the
amounts being offered, you won’t benefit from the vouchers.
If a dealer is offering incentives such as thousands of dollars off the
price of a vehicle, you can add that discount to the voucher amounts.
The dealers themselves will get the vouchers from the government via
electronic access.
If you’re unsure what gas mileage your current vehicle gets, go online
to www.fueleconomy.gov for information. Any new vehicle will have
the mileage on the window sticker.
