Autostereoscopic 3D

Introduction
Autostereoscopic Images instantly attract the viewers attention due to
their exceptional appearance.
Our intention was to develop a method that allows anyone to see 3D
without the need for external equipment such as Shutter or ed!"yan
#lasses $ with the additional premise to %e accomplished using ordinary
"omputer &ardware.
'e tried several autostereoscopic methods %ut none of them was as
convincing when comparing the esults.
(or our approach we use a so called Parallax )arrier *ethod.
+hat means that we put vertical )ars a%ove the actual Image
,a Parallax )arrier #rid- to generate a 3D Image.
Please read this *anual thoroughly as its "ontent will help you
to create high quality Autostereoscopic Images.

+o create your own 3D Images or Photographs you should have access to
the following material2
Digital "amera or "amcorder ,for creating your own Photos-
&igh 3uality In/4et Printer , 355dpi6 -
In/4et +ransparencies , #lasclear -
)e careful as there are also white!greyish transparencies

A prerequisite for the perception of a 3D Image or Photo is that each eye
gets a unique Image. If that precondition is met your %rain will perceive
a 3 dimensional Image.
(or our approach we use a so called Parallax )arrier *ethod.
+hat means that we put vertical )ars a%ove the Image ,a Parallax
)arrier #rid-

Our Picture consists of several Images that are put into vertical slices
printed on an In/4et +ransparency with a regular In/4et Printer.
Onto that Image we place our spacer. +o create a 3D Image another
+ransparency with a parallax %arrier is put on top. 9ow we have a
separator that lets us see a unique image per view perspective.
Page 4

8et:s use an .xample ; we have three Source Images2
One 8eft 0iew7 *iddle 0iew and ight 0iew
+he Software calculates an Interlaced Image that consists of vertical
slices of all three Images. It is even possi%le to include more photos7 so
that you will have additional perspectives7 when moving the assem%led
3D Image to the left or right side7 similar to a hologram.
+o view your 3D Photos you need a 8ightSource from %ehind to
compensate for the )arrier #rid7 or you can put the assem%led Image in
front of a 'indow7 which will wor/ the same way.

If you see unevenly spaced lines on printout attempts7 as in the picture
a%ove7 your printer driver pro%a%ly does not support the esolution. +his
will result in an unwanted *oire Pattern7 or a completely )lac/ #rid.
emem%er to always print your 3D Images at the &ighest 3uality your
Printer is capa%le of. <ou may attempt printing on normal Paper %efore
pringting to +ransparencies to preview the esult.

III. Setup and Installation of the Software
+he Software was written as an addon for #imp. #imp is an OpenSource
#raphic Software Application. In this way you will o%tain a full featured
#raphics Suite. In which you will have a unique and very fast 'or/flow7
to ad4ust your Photos and generate your 3D Images in one single
.nvironment. .ven Import and .xport into Ado%e:s Photoshop (ile
(ormat is possi%le from within #imp.
#imp is OpenSource $ +he latest 0ersion can %e downloaded from

>. "opy the 3D Script (ile you received via e*ail into
#imp:s Script (ile Directory. A new directory can %e added using
.dit ;? Settings ;? (olders ;? Scripts
9ow you can restart #imp and you should have a new Option in the
Applications (ile *enu called @3D Parallax )arrierA .
+hen load your Images from 8eft ,top level layer- to ight side each onto
a single 8ayer.
9ow you:re ready to process the Image.

"reate a #rid 8ayer2
"reates a Parallax )arrier #rid7 that fits your Image and is placed a%ove

"reate Ad4ustment (rame2
"reates a Small ectangle so that you can match the (ront and ear
+ransparencies exactly.
A perfect alignment of the )arrier grid with the Image is a prerequisite
for a good 3D Photo. <ou can ad4ust the distance from your image where
the frame should %e drawn as well as its thic/ness. Some printer will not
print Pixel 8ines of one Pixel siBe in D55dpi mode7 even if they should %e
capa%le of7 in such a case you can ad4ust it to two Pixels. <ou may even
ad4ust the color of the ,#rid8ayer- ad4ustment frame7 and the rear ,Image

"reate a "ut *ar/2
"reates a (rame that can %e used to cut out the Image with eg. a
Scissor
+he Image you made from the 8eft Side must %e
placed on top.
Always put the Images in an order from 8eft to ight
0iew.
If you loo/ at the Printout from the ear side and it loo/s more @3D;li/eA
then you pro%a%ly messed up the Image Order.
0. Assem%ly of a 3D Photo
"ut out the +ransparencies and either ma/e a spacer with a thin layer of
paper framed around the transparencies7 or use plexiglass or any other
transparent material. Set the Spacer thic/ness regarding the resolution
and amount of images you used. 'hen printing at 355dpi with E Images
at a pixel width we use a Spacer thic/ness of 5.Emm. +his results in a
%rilliant 3D experience.
+a/e care that you match the ad4ustment lines exactly or it won:t wor/.
'e usually ta/e some duct tape and fix two opposite sides losely7 match
the lines and then fix it with crystal clear scotch tape or something
similar.

1se only horiBontal shifted point of views
<ou may use a "amcorder to capture the Images
1se very small steps $ max one Interocular distance ,GD.3 cm-7
Distances further apart as 3cm will have no more positive impact
on depth perception
1sing %igger steps will result in a very @4umpyA )ac/ground of your

If you do a Portrait7 align all Images at the "enter of the Person
,e.g. 9ose-
<ou can Improve the 3D Image 3uality7 if you cut out the
)ac/ground and create a custom )ac/ground for your O%4ect
If possi%le use a tripod7 the o%4ect must not move during capture
