Flottec 2000 Series Collectors

Product Data Sheet

Flottec 2000 Series products are acid and aqueous forms of cresylic and alkyl monothiophosphates (MTP) and
dithiophosphates (DTP). These products are used primarily for the flotation of sulfide ores containing copper, lead,
zinc, silver, and gold. The DTPs are especially suited for sulfide flotation in alkaline circuits when selectivity against
iron sulfides is needed. MTPs are especially well suited for sulfide flotation in acid circuits and to improve the
recovery of gold at any pH. By varying the hydrocarbon chain length and the type of salt created, the collector
activity, frothing characteristics and pH operating range can be modified greatly, making MTPs and DTPs a very
versatile series of products.

Methods of Addition and Uses

Flottec 2000 series collectors (except those supplied in
acid form) are aqueous and can be added neat or diluted
up to ten times for ease of metering. The products are
also stable in both acid and alkaline circuits. Usual
treatment levels are 5 100 grams/ton, added either to
the grinding circuit or to the flotation circuit. Stage
addition will usually enhance performance. Each product
has its own frothing characteristic nature. Generally, alkyl
DTP exhibit little or no frothing characteristic for C2 and
C3 carbon chain length. The frothing characteristic
becomes more prevalent with increasing carbon chain
length. All cresylic based products contribute to the
frothing characteristic of the flotation pulp based on the
type of cresylic used in its manufacture. Plant testing is
recommended to determine optimum addition points and
treatment levels.

The main duty for sodium dialkyl DTPs are the flotation of
copper sulfides, copper activated sphalerite, nickel sufides
and ores containing gold, silver and PGMs where
selectivity is required against iron sulfides in alkaline
circuits. They are used as well when selectivity is needed
for copper sulfides from galena or non activated
sphalerite. Higher carbon chain products are also effective
for middlings flotation. The frothing characteristic of the
product increases with increasing carbon chain. DTPs
exhibit excellent collecting properties for the flotation of
iron sulfide minerals in acidic circuits.

The sodium and ammonium dicresylic DTP does behave
very similarily to the alkyl products. These products
provide an additional benefit in that they are excellent
galena and silver collectors and have frothing properties
across the range. The frothing characteristic of the
products can be varied. The acid form tends to exhibit the
highest frothing characteristic. Those properties then
decrease relative to the counter ion from sodium to
ammonium to finally the organic salt form being least.
The strength and frothing characteristic of the products
can also be varied similarly to the alkyl DTPs by modifying
the grade of cresylic acid used. Purer forms tend to
exhibit less frothing characteristic and are more selective
than products manufactured with impure forms of cresylic
acid.

The sodium dicresyl and dialkyl MTPs were designed
originally to be copper collectors in acid circuits and the
Leach

Precipitation Flotation (LPF) process. However, they
have been found in certain conditions to be superior
auxiliary collectors for ores containing free gold in
alkaline circuits. The dialkyl MTPs are typically used
when excessive frothing in the flotation circuit
becomes an issue.

Flottec 2000 series products can be used alone or in
conjunction with other collectors, although care must
be taken when used in conjunction with xanthates in
order to maintain the benefits of the improved
selectivity of the DTPs and MTPs.

Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene

The acid forms of the DTPs should not be pre-mixed
with water as this will liberate poisonous gases. The
products should be added directly to the flotation
circuit to avoid gas liberation at the levels used in
flotation pulps. These aqueous products are of an
alkaline nature. Prolonged contact with skin should
be avoided and alkali burns may result if proper
protective equipment is not used during handling. If
skin contact occurs, the area should be cleansed with
copious quantities of water, including the eyes.
Vomiting should be induced if taken internally. Please
refer to the appropriate MSDS for individual product
safety information.

Shipping, Handling and Storage

The products are available in 55 gallon poly drums
and returnable 275 gallon totes. Please contact
customer service for the net and gross weights.

These products are corrosive to most metals. It is
recommended that the product be stored in 316
stainless steel or mild steel tanks with phenolic liners.
Mild steel can be used but is not recommended. All
components for transferring these materials should be
plastic or phenolic or able to withstand alkaline or
acid corrosion for both neat and diluted material. Do
not use copper, brass or soft rubber in feed or
storage systems. Avoid storage near extreme heat.
Do not mix with acidic solutions to prevent H

generation.
