PE TOWN, SOUTH AFR

Tenth Annual Conference 1 993

The tenth annual Church of Christ (30A.D.) conference was held in Kimberley this year from September 29 to
October 3. This was our first time to hold the conference in

Zimmerman, Jerry and Aleta Kennedy and Fran and myself.

Morethan being pleased with all of the teachers, Iwas astonished and pleased with the preparations of the local

thiscity in the far northern Cape and attendance was a little

lower because of the distance to be traveled. From Cape Town alone, it is 600 miles and with travel costs getting higher all of the time, we had around 200 people attend.
The theme that I decided on this year was "Jesus Christ - The Same Yesterday, Today and Forever." The reason for this theme is that Ifelt every year we are always dealing with different subjects and we sometimes forget
about the most important fact of our faith, Jesus Christ. So Idecided this year all of the classes and sermons would deal

They worked together putting differences aside for the good of the work and everything worked very smoothly. The cooks did a magnificent job, the buildings were arranged well and

Elders and Deacons

Ordained
In December, several of the churches in outlying areas

came together to ordain elders and deaconsfor their local churches. Churches gathered from Swellendam, Ashton
and Robertson to ordain their leaders together. This shows

a logical step in the work in that they are trying to lead themselves according to Biblical principles and this Is good.
Also, in November, MfulenI ordained two deacons and Macassar has plans to do this on February 20. Please pray for these small churchesas they tryto go forward and follow
the right principles.

Iam sorry that Icould not be in touch with most of you while I was there. I hope that you understand and forgive me if I hurt you. Thank-you, Pete, for such a special Christmas present, but Inever want to be awayfrom you for a long time like that again - I missed you too much! You all keep well and in touch. May God continue to bless you as you live for Him.

Every year, the womenfix the food the sameway. They have to use big blacl< iron pots on open fires. The men kill several sheep and/or goats and the women prepare the meat in several ways. Ijust can neverget used to seeing the women spending hours scraping the hair offthe headsand feet of the animals so they can boil and eat them. They also eatthe"guts," butfirst they have to soak itin a big dish. They nowknowthat we do not appreciatethe "best" parts,so they
do not even offer anymore (ha!).

Conference was another great time of fellowship and

Mommy-txi-be is grawving!
As you can see by the picture, Fran is growing rather nicely with our first child. Asof this picture she was sixmonths along with another three to go. She has gained very little weight overall and her tummy is all baby. Herdue date is July8 and we are anxiously awaiting the day. The doctor has given her a good report at every check-up except for her iron being a little low. We thought there was something wrong when we walked to the post office one hot day and she just about passed out in the road. Now that we have that all cleared up, she has
been doing really well

Meeting
Every year, Easter is considered to be the last long weekend of the sum mer. Other than the obvious religious meaning, the churches feel that the long weekend is a great time to get together. Usually we travel up country
to other churches, but this was the first

year that we were invited to stay here in Cape Town. It was a nice change. There were about 500 people from
all over the area in attendance and

there was good fellowship among all the people who attended. The services started on Fridaymorning for the whole day, continued on Saturday and fin ished on Sunday morning. Fran and I

various divisions of the church here. There

has been a lot of division over the years and

some of the wounds seem to be healing. We are real pleased for that and pray that the spirit set forth at the meeting will continue. There are still a lot of things to be worked out

and we hope that things will continue as they started at these meetings. We had a good time together with all of
the brothers and sisters and look forward to

the next gathering at conference in Septem

On February 20, the Macassar church ordained two new deacons for the work that continues to grow there.

David Jantjies led the sen/ice. These two brothers are two of the strongest brothers in the church and are already making a difference inthe servicesthere. They show genuine concern for the affairs of the church and are very active in promoting the church. Plans are underway for some other brothers to be ordained in the

It's A Boy!!!!

Denzil Chester Laughren

June 29, 1994
8:20 a.m.

8 lbs., 10 oz.

Left: Dad's first hold. Below: Fran with Denzil after birth.

After fourteen years of marriage, our first child, Denzi! Chester Laughren, made his arrival on June 29, 1994 at 8:20 a.m. The doctor could tell by an ultrasound done on June 27 that it was going to be a big baby and he also said that the baby was not dropping like itshould. Aftera second opinion,we felt it best to go ahead and deliverthe baby ten daysearly and on June 29, Fran delivered our son by Caesarean section. Iwas in the delivery room with her, and from the time they started until the time Denzil was in the nursery was less than 15 minutes. The whole process was absolutely amazing. Many people have asked about the significance of his name. He was named after my father, Chester Laughren, who died in 1986 and Dad's older brother [by 9 years] who died at the age of twelve in Decem-

ber, 1937. Myfather used to talk affection ately with my sister, Lisa Andrews, and I,

about his big brother Denzil, who would pull him around on a sled or wagon on the farm where they grew up in Canada while my father was only 3 years old. While there is
anotherDenzil inthefamily (mycousin, Denzil Palmer), there has not been another Denzil Lauahren since that time. In this way, we honor myfather, Chester, and his big brother Denzil, and preserve their memories. We praise God for a healthy little boy and thank one and allfor all of the prayers, cards, letters, flowers and gifts that we have re ceived. We feel that God has performed a
miracle In our lives.

The proud grandparents are Al and Annette Hamilton of Gillette, Wyoming, and Collins and Flo Blackmarrof Hampton, Geor gia.

Grandma Hamilton's first look at grandson Denzil.

The Elections
As you have no doubt heard, the elections that took place on April 27 went pretty much as expected (voting wise). The one thing that was missing that most people expected to happen was the violence. Most people had great fears of great chaos enveloping

Youth Camp
Usually, in Julyof every year, Franand Iteach at the Northern Cape Youth Camp. You may have read about these in past years as we have traveled to Kuruman, Upington and Griekwastad. We always enjoy these times with the youth, because we feel that the church can become stronger by working to

the land. It never really materialized.

There has been less violence since the

elections than in any time in the last five years. We praise God for that. The situation here is one of great reconciliation. We are pleasantly sur prisedat how itseems that most people (except for the most radical at both extremes) are genuinely trying to get along. People have realized that they must work together to make South Africa great and keep itfrom going the way of the rest of Africa. Many cabinet appointments were made from all par ties according to the peoples' abilities and "cronyism" went on less than ex pected. South Africa can be a great country, buta lotof work has yet to be done. Please pray for President
Mandela and all of South Africa as we

make the youth stronger. Unfortunately, we were not able to attend any camps this year since Denzil was born at the very time that the camps were taking place. Two years ago, a youth camp was also started for the churches in the western part of the country. This year, a young African brother from Cape Town, named John Kokwe, and I put the program together for this camp. John asked me that since we could not attend the camp, could he please write an article of our newsletter telling about the 1994 camp. The following isthe verbatim article that he wrote describing the camp that took place June 29 to July 3, 1994.

go through this transition period Inthe country's history.

The Western Cape Churches of ChristYouth had recently its annual youth camp which was held if Beaufort West from the 29th of June to the 3 July 1994. It was a wonderful week of which we thank Brother Pete Laughren for the program that he made for us. The theme of the camp was "Christians living in a non-Christian World." The theme was divided into different topics. We had four ministers who were working as teachers for the different classes, namely R. Gallant, J. Mpompo, E. Gontsana, and W. Mdladlana. We enjoyed the classes a lot, because it really made us understand how to act amongst people who are not Christians. So as the youth we gained a lot, by learning what the Word of God says to us as people who are living in a non-Christian

world. There was a spirit of fellowship and broth erhood amongst the youth nnembers who at tended the camp.
We also held the official elections for the

They are (Including the names of the town that they are from): Chairman - J. Kokwe (Beaufort West), Vice Chairman - E. Njadu (Beaufort West), Secretary N. Mdladlana (Gugulethu), ViceSecretary- S. The committee willbe serving for two years and we ask all brothers and sisters to pray for them.
There was a farewell function for E. Gontsana

The last three months, things have been slow for me. I have not been very busywithteaching, onlybusywaiting for the arrival of our baby. I have had to slow down quite a bit, and Iam quite
excited.

My mother, Annette Hamilton, ishere for a coupleof months to help us with the baby and it is a pleasure having her here. We are all having fun getting ready for the baby. Wegreatlyappreciateall ofthe prayers, well-wishes, giftsand calls. We will try to keep you all posted on our progress. Asyou can see, I've been a bit consumed with this pregnancy and I am sorry that 1do not have much else to talk about. I hope that all is well with you. We pray that God will bless
you as you live for Him.

as he isgoing abroad during August or September. May God be with him and always keep him safe. The message he was given by the youth was that he must go and pave the way for others to follow. The Sunday morning he delivered his farewell sermon which was in Hebrews 13:2, "Doing God's Will Totally." It was an inspiringand lively sermon. The entire camp was blessed, because we could feel the presence of God. The 1995 camp will be held in the George circuit. At the present
moment we are having our camps in community halls due to a lack of funds. As a result of that, a
new committee has devoted themselves to work

veryhard to raise enough funds so that we can hire a camping place for our camps. So we will appreciate any form of donations or sponsors so as to reach our goal. Once again we want to thank Brother Pete Laughren for the wonderful work he did for us and the time he devoted in doing the hard work. May God always bless him and Sister Fran and their new baby boy.

Also very pleasing was the fact that there were several missionaries in attendance this year who had not attended before. Wg arrived here in May of 1991 for our second term of service and we have found how true the saying is that "time flies." It took us the entire time in 1990 to visit most of our supporters and this time we hope to see the ones that we did not see last time (that means you. Rick and Betsy! I). I taught "Philippians and Colossians" and Phil taught "A Guide to Christian Growth." We had anywhere from 20 to 35 students each night and about 20 students got
credits for the courses.

Please pray for these education developments in South Africa and especiallyfor those of us with Cape Bible Seminary as we continue to try to train leaders to meet the ever-pressing needsforqualityleadershipinthelocal churches.

Missianary Gathering
Theday after the yearly conference, all of the missionar ies in South Africa, except for three, met for a time of fellowship and discussion in Graaff-Reinet. Many plans have been tried to get everybody together, but usually nothing could be worked out. All plans came together this year and the meeting went well. We had discussions concerning education, unity and other matters. Along with times of fellov^hip, games and, of course, food, a good timewas had byall. Please prayfor all the missionaries in SouthAfrica, as we may be working different strategies in different areas, but we ail serve the same Lord and are trying to build His Kingdom. Fellowship meetings such as these are a step in the right direction. The next one is planned for March, of
1995, also in Graaf-Relnet.

Fran's mother, Annette Hamilton, arrived back in

Wyoming safe after being a great help with Denzil

after he was born. Thanks, Mom, for coming! In August I made a trip by myself to the Kimberiey area and taught classes on Saturday and Sunday,

preached Sunday morning and performed a couple

of weddings. Through the help of a local brother, John Kokwe, I have gone to some new areas here in the Cape for

classes and services. In September, I taught and preached at the church in Paarl, led a youth leaders' classinGuguletu, and will be soon going to other local
areas.

Jim Conley and his family came through Cape Town for a couple of days on their way back to the U.S.
Two of the local churches, Mfuleni and Macassar had

special prayers for Denzil the first Sunday that he attended services in both places. i made a trip to Graaff-Reinet the last weekend in August with Jerry Kennedy as he made the final check on plans for this year's conference. I preached while we were there on Sunday morning. One of the localchurches here in Cape Town (Bishop Lavis) has had major problems. The elder that was ordained just quit coming and told no one why. Recently another leader admitted to some major problems. Sincehisadmission, the spirithas improved at the church. I have resumed a Tuesday night Bible study there to try and help. Please prayfor the church
there.
