BOYNE CITY It was your
typical Northern Michigan
Homecoming contest, chilly, wet
and rainy.
The Boyne City Ramblers
didnt let the distraction of the
weeks festivities take away from
their game plan as they defeated
the East Jordan Red Devils 41-0
in a highly anticipated Lake
Michigan Conference match-up
on October 4.
Boyne City used their ground
game and chewed up over 250
yards in running past East Jor-
dan, led by Malik Smiths 85
yard, four touchdown effort as
the Ramblers improved to 5-1
overall, 3-0 LMC.
East Jordan took the opening
kickoff and was unable to get
anything going against the Ram-
bler defense, but following a low
punt on fourth down by kicker
Dustin Hejka that bounced off a
Boyne blocker, the Red Devils re-
covered at the 50 yard line.
The Red Devils then went on a
seven play drive to the Boyne
City 30, only to be stopped on
fourth down, turning the ball
back to the Ramblers.
Boyne then put together a
three first down, 11 play drive,
with sophomore Smith taking
the ball in for a touchdown from
three yards out with 1:54 remain-
ing in the opening quarter. Dal-
ton Gardner added the point
after for a 7-0 Rambler lead.
The drive was highlighted by a
pair of first down runs of (10, 25
yards) by Maceo Vroman.
East Jordan would then go four
and out on their next possession
and punt away to the Boyne 35.
The Ramblers would take over
and start their drive as the quar-
ter would in with the Ramblers
up 7-0.
Smith would add his second
score, a nine yard run at the 10:22
mark of the second quarter, and
with the Gardner kick, put
Boyne up 14-0.
On EJs next possession,
Boynes Jordan Wilmot picked
off a Hejka pass and returned it
to the EJ five yard line, setting
up the third score of the night for
Smith, just over a minute after
his last one for a 21-0 lead.
Our kids are understandably
down a bit but never quit work-
ing out there, East Jordan coach
Allen Peterson said. We have
made some big strides this year,
but we are still a ways away. I am
still very proud of these guys,
Boyne City is a great football
team and they are where we
want to be.
The Ramblers next possession
saw quarterback Corey Redman
hook up with Vroman for a 43-
yards scoring strike with just
about three and a half minutes
left before intermission for a 28-0
lead.
Smith would score his fourth
and final TD of the evening
shortly into the second half for
Boyne, making the score 34-0 as
the extra point was no good.
Boyne would then pick off an-
other East Jordan pass a few
minutes later as Max Cuper
grabbed the errant throw and re-
turned the ball 33 yards to the EJ
20 yard line. A few plays later
Rambler sophomore Luke Sage
would punch it in from inside the
5-yard line for a 41-0 Boyne City
lead and final score of the night.
In addition to Smiths big
night, Redman would finish 3-of-4
passing for 75 yards and a touch-
down, while Vroman carried four
times for 46 yards and hauled in
two passes for 67 yards and the
touchdown. Brad Fouchia rushed
for 52 yards and Mac Alexander
added 32 yards rushing.
Defensively, Boyne was led by
Cole Butler with 10 tackles, while
Sage and Alexander had eight
apiece.
For the Red Devils, Tim Schut
carried 14 times for 64 yards,
while Hejka added 44 yards on
nine carries.
Defensively for the East Jor-
dan, Michael Suess, Schut and
Ben Walton all had eight tackles.
We need to keep working like
we have been and it will get bet-
ter, these kids will work, they al-
ways have, added Peterson.
Tim Schut and Ben Walton had
a good game. Oscar Scheier and
Michael Suess also did well on
the defense.
The Ramblers travel to
Charlevoix (1-5, 0-3) on October
11, while East Jordan, 3-3. 1-2
plays Marion (1-5) at Alma Col-
lege the same night at 7pm.

TRAVERSE CITY The Rayder foot-
ball team ran into a tough St. Francis
team in a non-conference matchup that
saw the Gladiators come away with a 49-
7 victory on October 4.
The Rayders, which slipped to 1-5 over-
all with the loss, trailed 21-7 at intermis-
sion, only to see TCSF come out for more
in the second half.
The highlight of the evening for
Charlevoix was a 4-yard touchdown pass
from Luke Klinger to Will Telgenhof. It
was Telgenhof s first varsity touch-
down.
Klinger would end up going 8-of-20
passing for 94 yards and the TD on the
night, while Nate Moon hauled in three
passes for 58 yards.
Austin Putman and Shane Sutherland
were credited with strong defense.
The Rayders will host Boyne City in a
rivalry Lake Michigan Conference con-
test on October 11 at 7pm at Kipke Field.

Beginning fall 2014, the Lake
Michigan and Northwest Confer-
ences will become one league with
two seven-team divisions for high
school football. The decision was
made on Wednesday, September 25 at
a meeting of the superintendents
from all fourteen schools. Many of
the details, as well as the scheduling
specifics, will be developed by the
districts athletic directors over the
next month or so. According
to Steve Prissel, Elk Rapids
Schools Superintendent, merging
the conferences gives our football
programs more choices, more
scheduling options, allows us to bet-
ter collaborate and increases the
competitiveness of the schedules.
Unlike other high school sports, foot-
ball playoffs are determined on
a point system and having a more
competitive schedule should result
in greater opportunity for points
toward qualifying for the playoffs,
There is currently no plan to expand
the merger to other sports.
The mega-league, whose name is
yet to be determined, will be broken
into two seven-team divisions
based on high school enrollment
numbers and the strength of their
football program. One division
includes Boyne City, Grayling, Elk
Rapids, St. Francis, Glen Lake,
Kingsley and Benzie Central. The
other
division includes Harbor Springs,
East Jordan, Charlevoix, Suttons
Bay, Kalkaska, Mesick and Frank-
fort.
Each school will play the other six
in their division plus a mandated
crossover game with a school in
the other division. The remaining
two dates in the season will be filled
by playing schools outside the
league or in the other division.
One priority specified as the sched-
ules are put together is to maintain
rivalry games. Every two years,
schools may petition the league to
switch divisions. We really feel our
districts collaborate well, said
Prissel, This is a nice, natural fit for
this region.

GRAYLING It
may have taken a lit-
tle longer than ex-
pected, but when it
was finally over, the
Charlevoix Rayder
soccer team picked
up a 3-2 Lake Michi-
gan Conference vic-
tory over Grayling
on October 3.
The contest
started got off to a
normal start, but
five minutes into the
match, Mother Na-
ture decided she
would make her
presence felt with
some thunder and
lightning to go along
with the wet and
rainy conditions
that she was already
providing.
Per the MHSAA
rules, the teams
were escorted off
the playing field for
a minimum 30
minute delay, in
which there were a
few.
Once the safety
factor was lifted,
nearly an hour after
the scheduled start
time, Davis Labelle
took a pass from
Nick Snabes to give
the Rayders a 1-0
first half lead.
Grayling tied the
score in the second
half before Chris-
tian Matye put
Charlevoix back up
on a Brendan Britt
assist, and then the
Vikings knotted it at
2-2 to send the game
into overtime.
In the extra ses-

ONAWAY The Boyne City vol-
leyball team earned a big win over
the host Cardinals in the Onaway
Volleyball Invitational Tournament
on October 5.
The Ramblers improved to 32-10-3
overall on the season as they went
4-1-1 in the tourney.
Boyne opened pool play with vic-
tories over Cedarville (25-7, 25-14)
and then Central Lake (25-10, 25-21)
to advance to power pool play
where they lost to Onaway 13-25, 13-
25 and split with Cheboygan, 22-25,
25-22.
In bracket play the Ramblers
downed Cheboygan 26-25, 16-25, 17-
15 in the semifinals before defeat-
ing Onaway in the finals 28-26, 25-22
to win the tournament.
This was probably our biggest
win yet this season, Boyne City
coach Casie Parker said. We have
struggled for years with Onaway.
The girls fought hard and it was an
intense match.
I was very nervous about the
tournament because of how poorly
we had been passing all week,
Parker added. In power pool we
played Onaway first and couldnt
pass any of their serves. We then
played Cheboygan still struggling
and split. At that point I was un-
sure wed make it to the finals.
Kylie Hicks finished with 53 kills,
10 blocks and was 32-of-33 serving
on the day to lead Boyne City.
Heather Nichols added 101 as-
sists from her setter position, while
Paige Hornbeck had 24 kills and 11
aces. Mallory Karaszewki chipped
in with 40 digs and 10 aces, and
Erin Baker had 52 digs.
In the finals Paige Hornbeck
stepped it up big time for us,
Parker said. Heather (Nichols)
and Kylie (Hicks) made the all-tour-
nament team.
Boyne downs Red Devils
BOYNE CITY Boyne City out-
lasted East Jordan to pick up a
Lake Michigan Conference win 25-
14, 18-25, 25-17, 25-14 on October 1.
The Ramblers got 45 assists from
Heather Nichols, while Kylie Hicks
finished with 18 kills; Paige Horn-
beck added 13 kills and eight aces;
Mallory Karasewski had 11 kills
and Erin Baker added 32 digs.
We had a rough all around night
tonight, Boyne City coach Casie
Parker said. Im glad we were still
able to come up with the win. East
Jordan played well. They got a lot
of balls up, while we missed 15
serves. Our focus was not there
tonight.
East Jordan was led by Katie
Spence with 11 digs, seven kills and
was perfect from the serve line.
Adriana Dixon, Mariah Holm and
Paige Poindexter also served at 100
percent on the evening.
East Jordan sweeps Rams
EAST JORDAN The Lady Red
Devils downed Harbor Springs in
three straight sets to pick up a Lake

East Jordan won 25-9, 25-22, 25-20.
Kirsten Malpass finished with 10
kills, 12 digs and two blocks, while
Tommie Outman added 12 assists.
The girls played well showing
improvement in their team work-
ing skills every week, East Jordan
coach Anne Crick said.
Charlevoix falls
TRAVERSE CITY The Rayder
volleyball team gave it their best
but was unable to come up with a
victory over the Gladiators on Oc-
tober 3.
St. Francis won in three sets, 25-
15, 25-20 and 31-29.
With the loss, the Rayders
slipped to 23-11-1 overall and 3-2 in
Lake Michigan Conference.
We played them tough to the
very end, she said. The last
match went back and forth several
times, they built in momentum.
They tried so hard. Im happy with
what they did.
Madeline Boss led Charlevoix
with 19 kills, six digs and three
blocks, while Gloria Greene added
18 assists and served at 100 percent
for the night.
Olivia Storm was also perfect
from the line and added nine as-

What do home buyers
want in a new home?
Some of the must-have
amenities in a new
house are home offices
and green features.
Home buyers are will-
ing to give up devoted
space to home theaters
and other specialized
media rooms in order to
have a home office. In
fact, theyd be willing to
forego a formal dining
room altogether in order
to have a home office or
study.
And they want en-
ergy-efficiency in their
appliances, windows
and insulation.
Other desirable fea-
tures are large kitchens
with an island, though
granite countertops
arent necessarily im-
portant to all buyers.
Must features also in-
clude a main-floor mas-
ter suite; an outdoor
living room considered
more popular than an
outdoor cooking area;
ceiling fans; master
suite soaker tubs and
oversize showers with
seating areas; stone and
brick exteriors; commu-
nity landscaping with
walking paths and play-
grounds; and two or
more car garages.

Chevrolet recently began
shipping the all-new 2014
Corvette Stingray Coupe to deal-
ers.
Its an amazing sight to see
the transporters filled with
Stingrays heading to customers
in all corners of the country,
said Dave Tatman, plant man-
ager of General Motors Bowl-
ing Green Assembly plant. The
pride at Bowling Green is over-
whelming and it shows in the
tremendous quality and atten-
tion to detail going into each one
of these new Corvettes.
Bowling Green Assembly has
produced approximately 1,000
Corvette Stingrays for customer
deliveries. Most of these vehi-
cles are expected to be delivered
to dealers within the next few
weeks. To expedite delivery, ve-
hicles may be shipped out of
build sequence, which is a nor-
mal part of any new vehicle
launch. The Bowling Green fa-
cility underwent a $131-million
upgrade to support production
of the Corvette Stingray, includ-
ing approximately $52 million
for a new body shop to manufac-
ture the cars all-new aluminum
frame in-house for the first
time.
The lightweight aluminum
frame is the foundation for the
most powerful standard
Corvette ever, with an SAE-cer-
tified 455 horsepower (339 kW)
and 460 lb-ft of torque (624 Nm)
and 460 horsepower (343 kW)
and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm) with the
available performance exhaust
system. It is also the most capa-
ble standard Corvette ever, with
Z51-equipped models able to
sprint from 0 to 60 in 3.8 sec-
onds, run the quarter-mile in 12
seconds at 119 mph, achieve
1.03g in cornering grip and stop
from 60 mph in 107 feet.
Complementing its perform-
ance capability with efficiency,
the Corvette Stingray delivers
the best fuel economy of any
sports car on the market an
EPA-estimated 17 mpg in city
driving and 29 mpg on the high-
way. No other car offers more
than 455 horsepower and
greater than 29 mpg on the high-
way.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray is
the seventh generation of the
sports car, which has been built
exclusively at the Bowling
Green plant since June 1981.
Pricing for the 2014 Corvette
Stingray Coupe starts at $51,995
including destination. The Con-
vertible is priced at $56,995 in-
cluding destination. Production
of the Stingray Convertible will
begin by the end of this year.
Automotive Review
the 2014 Stingray Corvette is the most powerful standard model ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower (335
kW) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 nm). it will accelerate from 0-60 in less than four seconds (Photo by Joe imel

CITY OF EAST JORDAN
REQUEST FOR VARIANCES
The City of East Jordan Zoning Board of Appeals
has received a request for variances from Larry
Crumbaugh for the property commonly known as
607- 7th Street, which is in an R-1 Single-Family
Residential zoning district. The applicant proposes
to demolish and remove the existing dilapidated

required rear yard setback is 40 feet. The applicant
seeks two variances for the front & rear yard setback
requirements. The proposed home would meet the
remainder of the dimensional requirements of the R-
1 zoning district.

NOTCE OF PUBLC HEARNG
TO CONSIDER A DIMENSIONAL VARIANCE APPEAL
PUBLIC NOTICE
CITY OF EAST JORDAN
REQUEST FOR VARIANCES
The City of East Jordan Zoning Board of Appeals
has received a request for several variances from
John & Julia Doebel for the property commonly
known as 206 Mary Street, which is in an R-1 Sin-
gle-Family Residential zoning district. The appli-
cants propose to demolish an existing shed, and
build a new pole barn on their lot. The project as
proposed would require three variances from the
City`s Zoning Code:
1) decreasing the building setback off of the alley to
10 feet (minimum required is 20 feet); 2) exceeding
the maximum building height by one foot to 21 feet
(maximum is 20 feet); and 3) increasing the lot cov-
erage limits for all accessory buildings to 67.4% of
the square footage of the principal structure (maxi-
mum is 60%.)
A Public Hearing to receive comments on this re-
quest will be held on Monday, October 28, 2013 at
5:15 PM in City Hall, 201 Main Street, East Jordan,
MI. Written comments may be submitted to the East
Jordan Zoning Board of Appeals, c/o the City Clerk,
PO Box 499, East Jordan, MI 49727.
