SID #:____101260303__________ l Directions: o You may type or write your assignment (can be in another document). o Round to 2 decimal places in calculations. o For SPSS-related questions, hand in ALL syntax and only the necessary output (i.e., delete unnecessary tables). o Note: variable label, (variable name), [#marks] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. [10 marks] A drug company invented a new medication for the treatment of panic disorder which they thought would be better than the conventional medication. The company recruited 100 people who were diagnosed with panic disorder and randomly assigned them to the conventional treatment (n1=50) or the new approach treatment (n2=50). The variable is treatment type (TreatmentType). At the end of both treatments, the company administered a standard assessment to all clients in order to determine the level of panic disorder. This assessments scores range from 0 to 100, where 0 = no panic disorder and 100 = very bad panic disorder. The variable is: score on panic assessment (PanicScore). Test the hypothesis at the .05 level. a. What type of test is this? Independent[1 mark] b. SPSS syntax (can be included with the output) [2 marksmust also have the correct p level here] c. SPSS output [1 mark] d. What is the critical t (from table in book)? Answer : 1.99 e. What is the observed t (from output)? Answer: -11.33 f. Is it appropriate to consider whether the assumption of equal variances was violated for this test? If so, was it violated or not? [2 marks] Answer: Yes.The assumption was not violated. g. What should we conclude? [1 mark] Answer: Reject the null hypothesis. 2. [10 marks] In the last 20 years, the average GPA of applicants to the graduate psychology program has been 3.24 on a 4 point scale. This years admissions committee was looking at applications and collectively thought wow! These applicants have different GPAs than we have seen in the last 20 years! Test this hypothesis at the .01 level. The variable is GPA (GPA). a. What type of test is this? Answer: Simple

[2 marks] Answer:NO. Not applicable here. g. What should we conclude? Answer: Reject the null hypothesis.

3. [10 marks] A researcher was interested in examining the effects of violent, sexually explicit material on aggression. The researcher recruited 100 participants and tested their aggressiveness levels prior to showing them a violent, sexually explicit movie the researcher wanted to use this as a baseline. This variable is aggression time 1 (Aggression1). Then, all participants were shown a violent, sexually explicit film and after that their aggressiveness was rated again. The variable is aggression time 2 (Aggression 2). The data are in the SPSS file. Note that higher scores = higher aggression. Test the hypothesis at the .05 level. a. What type of test is this? Answer: Dependent [1 mark] b. SPSS syntax (can be included with the output) [2 marksmust also have the correct p level here] c. SPSS output [1 mark] d. What is the critical t (from table in book)? Answer: 1.99 e. What is the observed t (from output)? Answer:14.828 f. Is it appropriate to consider whether the assumption of equal variances was violated for this test? If so, was it violated or not? Answer: No.Equal Variance is not applicable here. g. h. What should we conclude? Answer: : Reject the null hypothesis. i.
