INTRODUCTION

Method of Instruction: Conference/Demonstration Instructor to Student Ratio is: 1:6 Time of Instruction: 5 mins Media: Hands-on Instruction
Motivator

NOTE: Allow one to two minutes for the lesson introduction. Explain the Contemporary Operational Environment (COE) to include lessons learned. Ensure the students are aware of how it will affect them during their future assignments. The purpose of this lesson is to provide you with the skills and knowledge required for operation of the Hydraulic excavator that you, as a operator must effectively perform in combat and peacetime environments.

Terminal Learning Objective

NOTE: Inform the students of the following Terminal Learning Objective requirements. At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will: Action: Conditions:

Perform Ditching Operations With the Hydraulic Excavator At a training site, given a guided discussion on ditching operations, a HYEX, a student guide, an equipment records folder and all personal protective equipment. Performed ditching operations using the engine mode high power/economy/auto idle and with the hydraulic mode selector on "DIG", constructed a ditch 3 feet deep +/- 6 inches, with a uniform depth for a distance of 20 feet, and placed spoils at least 3 feet away from the ditch. Performed all steps without error and with no damage to equipment or injury to personnel.

Standards:

Safety Requirements

Review local training area SOP. Kevlar/hard hats must be worn at all times. Hearing protection must be worn while equipment is running. Eye protection, gloves, must be worn when required, maintain 3 points of contact when mounting or dismounting equipment. Remove all jewelry. Use caution around moving parts. Low - Instructors should complete a risk assessment before conducting training, operations, or logistical activities.

Risk Assessment Level

Environmental Considerations

NOTE: It is the responsibility of all Soldiers and DA civilians to protect the environment from damage. Avoid unnecessary stripping of vegetation and waterways. Control dust conditions and limit water erosion by dressing area at the end of each day. Explain the purpose of drip pans and their location under the equipment. Avoid unnecessary equipment usage and follow established procedures for cleanup of fluid leaks. Restore site and surrounding areas as close as possible to the original ecological condition. Performance evaluation, refer to the student evaluation plan in the student guide. The Hydraulic Excavator is the machine of choice for ditching. If you are digging fighting positions, placing pipe or constructing drainage ditches, it can handle the job. It has the ability to work in a 360 degree arc making excavation a small task for it. While here, you will have the chance to see just how versatile this machine is.

Learning Step / Activity 1. Demonstrate Ditching Operations with the Hydraulic Excavator Method of Instruction: Instructor to Student Ratio: Time of Instruction: Media: Demonstration 1:6 35 mins Hands-on Instruction

NOTE: Before starting any work, walk the area to uncover any hazards and plan the job. Check for buried utilities lines and pipes and always check overhead clearance. Ensure pilot shutoff lever is in the locked position until machine is ready for use. Work mode selection switch should be in the dig mode with the engine select on (HP). A. Perform ditching operations 1) Propel excavator to dig site. 2) Before starting work, walk the area and check for hazards. 3) Make sure the machine is level before excavating. 4) To start the trench, extend the dipper arm completely. 5) Place bucket teeth at a 30 degree angle. 6) Actuate proper controls to start dig cycle. 7) The first cut is a marking cut approximately 4 feet long and 3- 4 inches deep. 8) The remaining ditching cuts should be approximately 4 feet long and 4 - 6 inches deep. 9) After filling the bucket, keep it as close to the ground as possible. 10) Place the spoils a minimum of 3 feet away from the edge of the trench.

NOTE: When working on a slope, place the spoil on the up side of the trench. 11) The deeper the trench the further away the spoil needs to be from the trench. 12) When dumping spoils, push back the spoil that already exists and replace it with the spoil thats in the bucket. 13) Return the bucket back to the trench and continue dig cycle until trench is completed. NOTE: Ensure students familiarize with both the arm cylinder technique and the bucket cylinder technique. Do not, strike the ground with the bucket to clean material from bucket, or use the bucket for tamping ground, do not use the side of the bucket to back fill ditch, do not back over the trench. B. Backfill operations 1) Position machine at a 90 degree angle to the excavation site, with propel motors to the rear of the machine. 2) Travel parallel to the excavation site, back fill as you go. 3) Use the side of the bucket for finish grading. 4) Return machine to park line. C. Review Determine if students have learned the material presented by: 1) Soliciting student questions and explanations. 2) Asking questions and receiving answers from the students. 3) Correcting student misunderstandings NOTE: 2. Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity. Learning Step / Activity 2. Perform Ditching Operations with the Hydraulic Excavator Method of Instruction: Instructor to Student Ratio: Time of Instruction: Media: Practical Exercise (Performance) 1:6 8 hrs 25 mins Hands-on Instruction

NOTE: The students may be tested on this task at any time during this block of instruction. If the student tests out on this task early THEY ARE STILL REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE ENTIRE BLOCK OF TRAINING. Practical exercise will be executed in a round robin training cycle. Conduct a Practical Exercise on Ditching Operations with the Hydraulic Excavator Refer to appendix C for practical exercise instructions.

NOTE: 3.

Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity. Learning Step / Activity 3. Performance Evaluation Method of Instruction: Instructor to Student Ratio: Time of Instruction: Media: Test 1:6 2 hrs Hands-on Instruction

Conduct a Hands-On Performance Evaluation Refer to appendix C for performance evaluation instructions. NOTE: 4. Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity. Learning Step / Activity 4. Performance Evaluation Review Method of Instruction: Instructor to Student Ratio: Time of Instruction: Media: A. General Instructions Explain the purpose of the test review. B. Conduct the Test Review 1) Ask the following questions and allow appropriate time for responses: a) Was all the evaluation information understood? b) Were all the performance steps on the evaluation understood? c) Did the evaluation reflect the contents of the lesson plan and the information taught? d) Does any portion of the class need more or less time, clarification, or practical exercise? e) What percentage of students missed any one performance step? Check each performance step and clarify as needed. f) NOTE: Was the time for the evaluation adequate? Test Review 1:6 5 mins Hands-on Instruction

Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.
