Janet Fase HDF 110 Assignment 4: College Admissions Part 1: Questions to answer Is this enough information to determine who

should get into the University? If not what other information would you want and why? Each university has a specific set of goals, priorities, and objectives, each one may differ in the emphasis it places on various parts of the application. Therefore, I dont think this is enough information to determine who should get into the university. Although we are given the standardized test scores and GPAs, we dont have much else to go on. Most universities require essays or personal statements and some even go as far as requiring letters of recommendation. Lastly, your involvement in school activities helps admissions understand how you spend time outside of the classroom and how youd contribute to their campus. If this is the only information used which three would you admit? How did you decide? (Mark 3 selected students for this part on the table on page 7 of this assignment) Jonathan Smith Cassidy Thomas Peter McIntyre ACT score 30 ACT score 29 ACT score 27 GPA 3.85 GPA 3.5 GPA 3.3

I decided based on the ACT scores because ACT scores is a standardized test across the country and GPAs compares you to the rest of your own school. GPAs are not standardized, therefore, an A in Ohio compared to an A in California could mean totally different thing. With the ACT, it is a third party that fairly compares one student to another student.

Part 2: Questions to answer

What new information is provided? Does the information now provided help in the decision making? If so how? The new information provided includes: classes taken during high school and extracurricular activities. This information does help make a better educated decision because with admission offices, they are looking for a well-rounded student that is going to contribute to not only their classes but the community as well.

Rank order students based on the information provided in part 2 above information. Which 3 get in? (Mark 3 selected students for this part on the table on page 7 of this assignment) Jonathan Smith Cassidy Thomas Peter McIntyre ACT score 30 ACT score 29 ACT score 27 GPA 3.85 GPA 3.5 GPA 3.3

How did you make your decision? I took away the ACT scores to see if I would rank it the same way and sure enough I did. I based it on the courses taken and whether or not the student was involved in extracurricular activities. Did your rank order change? Did anyone different get admitted? Why or why not? No, while the additional information was great and more of a solid reason to why I chose who I chose. My top three still out did all the rest of the students with being involved and even with a lower GPA than some, they took much harder courses than the others and were actually involved in extracurricular.

Part 3: Questions to Answer

What new information is provided? Does the information now provided help in your decision making? If so how? The new information included: race of the student, demographics of the area, and what kind of school they attended. It does help with the decision seeing what kind of schooling they did come from makes a big differences especially if no extracurricular were offered.

Rank order students based on above information. Which three get in? (Mark 3 selected students for this part on the table on page 7 of this assignment) Jonathan Smith. Devin Peterson Brandy Jackson ACT score 30 ACT score 25 ACT score 24 GPA 3.85 GPA 4.0 GPA 3.9

How did you make your decisions?

With the additional information given, I was able to make a different decision. While it is great that students do have extracurricular activitiessome schools didnt even offer them at all. With all the information given, I looked back at the GPA and ACT scores. Those students that had a higher GPA with the schools that had a very high dropout rate with not much offered shows a lot about the personality and strong willingness of that student. Did your rank order change? Did anyone different get admitted? Yes, Jonathan was the only one from my original three to still get admitted. Devin was admitted because his GPA was a 4.0 while attending an inner city school with a 58% dropout rate! He did everything possible including working two jobs. I also decided that Brandy should be admitted as well because her GPA was 3.9, played in the school band (basically the only extra offered) and that school has a 46% graduation rate and with her overcoming the hardships shows that this would be a great student. Is there additional information you would still like to have in making these admissions decisions? I think I would like to see personal statements along with essays. Part 4:

Final Thoughts: Respond to each of the following questions.

How do you think college admissions should be determined? List ALL factors you believe should be considered. Why did you select the factors you selected? What are the benefits of relying on the factors you selected?

School GPA, classes and achievements Standardized test (ACT or SAT) Essays and personal statements Letters of recommendation Activities and special talents Demographics of high school

I believe this exemplifies each aspect of the prospective student. College admissions should get the real you and see what reasons why you should be admitted into their university with everything laid out in the open to discuss it. Like I mentioned before, GPA is not the same for every school, extracurricular are not offered at each school and a personal statement will tell you exactly why that students wants to be admitted to your university. The benefits are to get to know your potential student just for not what their GPA or ACT says but where they come from and what they have to offer.

What are the potential drawbacks of relying on the factors you selected? I dont think there are any drawbacks since I am trying to make is a fair systems for everyone. Everyone should have a chance to attend college if their so desire is to do so. It isnt their fault that their school didnt offer certain things while other schools did.
