The Hoshin Matrix

A Practical Tool for Choosing and Aligning

Quality/Improvement Projects.

Presented by Terry Osburn

IndyASQ Monthly Meeting, Jan. 10, 2006
Definition, Scope, History
•Hoshin (Compass) kanri (Leadership)
•Synonym “Policy Deployment”
•Scope: only the Hoshin matrix tonight
•History: from Japan, outgrowth of Peter
Drucker’s MBO
The Issue and the Solution
•Working too much on projects that are
urgent but not strategic
•So link projects to what the business cares
about, and interconnect projects
•An example: IndyASQ
The IndyASQ Mission Statement
•The mission of the Indianapolis Section of
the ASQ is to promote the ultimate success
of the quality profession through a
participative environment built around
networking opportunities, skill
development, training and outreach to meet
the current and future needs of our
members, community, state and national
association.
