Master Thesis Work

Department of Energy Sciences Division of Combustion Engines

Master Thesis Work on Alternative Fuels for Internal Combustion Engines The division of combustion engines at Lunds Tekniska Hgskola (LTH) covers a variety of research projects from various areas. The divisions engine lab consists of ten computer controlled engine test beds with measurement equipment for studies and analysis of the combustion processes. Some of the ongoing research projects are financed by the Competence Centre of Combustion Processes (KCFP Kompetenscentrum fr Frbrnningsprocesser), an organisation with participants from LTH and from the industry. KCFP focuses on improvement and development of combustion systems for internal combustion engines. KCFPs fuel effect project started about two years ago when it became evident that the expected shortage of crude oil, our concern of global warming and recent progress in engine development will change our view on fuels for combustion engines. A reduction of oil production will increase our demand for fuels to replace the conventional fuels. To keep down the anthropogenic expels of green house gases there is a need for fuels derived from CO2- neutral feedstock. The fuel effects projects aim is to increased knowledge of the interaction between the fuel, the combustion process, efficiency and emission formation. In addition, new combustion processes for IC-engines have evolved that call for new means for characterisation of fuels and related parameters. In the course of the fuel effects project a lot of work has to be spent on engine tests and evaluation of these tests. Hence, the fuel effects projects is now looking for a thesis worker with a genuine interest in measurement technique, to conduct both engine measurements as well as evaluation with the focus on alternative diesel fuels.

The thesis work will focus on the following: Literature study in the topics fuel parameters. Adjustment to the existing engine measurement setup. Experimental investigation of fuel effects by means of in-cylinder engine measurements as well as exhaust gas measurements. Improvement of the existing engine measurement setup if needed. Evaluation and interpretation of obtained measuring data. The tools used in the project are based on LabView, C, and Basic together with the communication protocols tcp/ip and rs232. It is beneficial if the thesis worker has experience in usage of these tools. Knowledge of measurement and control technique is a plus. The engine experiments will be carried out at LTHs Division of Combustion Engines engine test lab. The division will provide a Volvo D5 engine which is configured as a single cylinder test engine and equipped with a common rail direct injection engine. Control parameters as injection pressure and timings, inlet pressure and temperature as well as exhaust gas recirculation can be altered independently. The result of the work will be presented in the scope of the thesis work and shall be presented by clearly arranged diagrams which are to be discussed critically. The thesis work starts in the beginning of 2008 and has a time frame of about six months. As the project covers a wide area of work it will be discussed with the thesis worker where to focus.
