Colour Chart: Reinventing Colour, 1950 to Today looks at the moment in twentieth-
century art when a group of artists began to perceive colour as 'readymade' rather than
as scientific or expressive.
This rich and vibrant exhibition will include works by more than forty artists, including
Ellsworth Kelly, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, Frank Stella, Yves Klein, Richard Serra,
John Baldessari, Dan Flavin, Damien Hirst, David Batchelor, Jim Lambie, Angela Bulloch
and Cory Archangel.
DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture takes an ambitious and revolutionary look at the
history of modern and contemporary sculpture. This new collection display continues to
examine and question the trajectory of artistic innovation in twentieth-century art and
beyond.
Sculpture in the form of object, installation, assemblage and ready-made will sit
alongside more surprising forms, such as painting, video, photography, language and
performance.
In addition, key figures from the cultural arena have been invited to co-curate selected
sections of the display, offering their own inspiring interpretations of the Tate Collection.
Reflecting their own specialist practice, they present us with new ways of seeing and
appreciating sculpture.
DLA Piper Series: This is Sculpture includes by artists such as Sir Jacob Epstein, Henry
Moore, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Arman, Yayoi Kusama, Joseph Beuys, Gilbert &
George, Cornelia Parker and Michael Landy.

ARTIST ROOMS: Sol LeWitt
Wolfson Room
12 May – 13 September 2009
10:00 - 17:50
Admission Free
Tate Liverpool presents a major wall drawing by influential American artist Sol LeWitt as
part of the first UK tour of ARTIST ROOMS, a collection created by dealer and collector
Anthony d'Offay and acquired by the nation in 2008. The concept was to devote one
room to an artist and show simultaneously in galleries across the UK.
Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was a pioneer of Conceptual Art and Minimalism. In 1969, he
began to conceive guidelines for two-dimensional works drawn directly on the wall. Over
1,200 of his wall drawings have been executed so far, and his art continues to influence
artists and fascinate audiences in various sites across the world.
At Tate Liverpool the monumental and colourful Wall Drawing #1136 (2004) spans the 22
metre long wall of the ground floor gallery.
The UK tour of ARTIST ROOMS has only been made possible through the exceptional
generosity of independent charity The Art Fund and, in Scotland, of the Scottish
Government.

composition.

− The Albert Dock was designed by Liverpool Dock Trustees’ surveyor Jesse Hartley
and named after Prince Albert. Work began in 1841 and it opened in 1846.The
Dock’s warehouses stored valuable cargo from all over the world. Steamers, barges,
brandy boats and corvettes (in World War II) all docked there.
− The Dock's fortunes waned after WWII, and it closed in 1972. In 1983 the Albert Dock
Company Ltd and the Merseyside Development Corporation began to restore the site
to its former glory, breathing new life into a rundown area. In 1988 the Albert Dock
was officially re-opened by HRH Prince Charles.
− 2008 will mark the Dock’s 20th anniversary since its restoration in 1988.
− From 1988-1996, Richard and Judy presented This Morning on Granada TV. Their
studio looked out onto the Albert Dock. Fred Talbot presented the weather standing
on a floating map of the UK; viewers cheered each time he leaped across from
mainland Britain to Northern Ireland.
− The Dock has the largest group of Grade 1 listed buildings in Britain and is a World
Heritage Site.
