1. Luka Grilc Brand and Product Director 2. Matej Boinik Ski Constructor 3. Vinko Avgutin R&D Manager 4. Marko Kozjek Ski Constructor

What drives Elans need for innovation? Vinko Avgutin: First of all, its a matter of tradition - and part of the tradition is a new collection is introduced every year. This yearly development cycle is our greatest motive to innovate, to develop something new, not merely redesigning the graphics. Luka Grilc: Another important point is the location, the people, the passion ... Skiing is our life and this holds true for everyone working here. Weve never been the biggest, weve been always the underdog, Elan was actually set up to provide skis to partisans in WWll and even nowadays - were a niche player on the market, but always fighting to be better than the competition. And innovation is definitely a means to succeed. WHAT ARE THE PREREQUISITES OF AN INNOVATION-DRIVEN BRAND? Vinko Avgutin: Its absolutely instrumental to have an organizational structure which supports research & development. You need a teamwork spirit, with every member of the team contributing to the common goal, upgrading each others ideas. And last, but not least, you need a positive atmosphere inside the organization. Matej Boinik: Every R&D specialist should spend a lot of time on the snow, he should be driven towards constant improvement. For example, Amphibio was developed to give skiers the ability to squeeze 100% out of their skis even if theyre not necessarily 100% prepared. We made the top race ski experience available to advanced recreational skiers. Marko Kozjek: In the end, its about people recognizing and buying into the benefits of the innovation. A successful product on the market is the ultimate confirmation of our good work. Luka Grilc: Elans innovations are the result of two factors: first of all, we are specialists in skis manufacturing, probably the best in the world. The skis industry is extremely segmented and weve got them all covered really well with racers, ambassadors, freestyle riders, women skiers ... Every innovation has to be a step forward compared to existing solutions.

Secondly, weve set ourselves the challenge to develop simple, easy to understand solutions, which convey a clear message. Describe how a new ski is developed? Vinko Avgutin: In a certain point of time, everyone, the whole industry is looking at the same problem and then every manufacturer comes up with its own solution. Usually the competition comes up with similar ideas, but here at Elan, we always try to achieve something more, to get more benefits out of one solution or solve the problem in a simpler way. Once a dealer remarked why Elan for once cant just do the same thing as everybody else. We dont want that, its not how we work! Marko Kozjek: Weve developed the Real tech concept, which drives us to seek innovations which the skier can see, test and feel on snow. It should deliver real benefits. Would you agree every innovation creates the need for new innovations? Luka Grilc: Sure, but you need to work in sync with the segment the skis are for. The latest innovation, Amphibio skis, is a logical development, an upgrade from WaveFlex, Fusion and ultimately the shaped skis. Every one of these solutions facilitated or enhanced skiing, so Amphibio is the latest step towards the best possible handling on snow while maintaning its sporty character. Vinko Avgutin: Throughout our history weve learned to make evolutions, not revolutions. Well, apart from carving, which truly revolutionized skiing. Marko Kozjek: Plus we have tons of unrealized ideas in the drawer, just waiting for the right moment ... What is the future of skiing going to look like? Vinko Avgutin: There are several trends affecting the skiing industry. Ones definitely moving the sport closer to urban areas, with parks, indoor skiing etc. On the other hand theres a segment of people moving from

groomed slopes to freeride and touring terrains to be in touch with nature. An important global trend is part of the whole healthy, active lifestyle movement, from which we can introduce new people to the sport. At the end its about innovations facilitating skiing for everyone. Marko Kozjek: We should start treating skiing as a family activity and offer something to everyone, mums, dads and kids. How is Elan helping to preserve the natural environment? Vinko Avgutin: Elan is one of the few skiing manufacturers with an environmentally friendly production, certified by the the ISO 14001 standard. Furthermore, as an European based manufacturer, we need to take into consideration strict EU directives regarding material handling, waste management etc. We are paying a great deal of attention to these things right from the beginning, when the concept is being developed. Marko Kozjek: If you only consider the carbon footprint of our products, manufactured in the middle of Europe, compared to skis made in the Far East, Elan is much better off. Vinko Avgutin: We are not going to see the 100% recyclable ski just yet, but there are several other things that can be done, you can reuse the skis to produce energy for ski production. Elan is reusing 75% of its waste. What can we expect from Elan in the future? Vinko Avgutin: Surprises! Im confident that, if we can maintain a good creative atmosphere, well come up with exciting new ideas. Were already working on the 2013/14 collection, but this isnt the place nor the time to talk about it. Luka Grilc: Our vision is to become the number 1 in innovation and design of technical sports equipment and will give everything weve got to achieve this goal. As long as weve got a talented team working passionately and willing to make considerable sacrifices to achieve the best possible results, our future is guaranteed.

ELAN SKIS INTERVIEW

INNOVATION AS A STATE OF MIND

Elans history is full of remarkable innovations, powerful enough to revolutionize skiing and the way were enjoying this marvellous sport. They have been developing novel approaches to ski constructions, shapes and profiles since 1963, when Elan first set up its R&D Institute and came up with two patents only two years later. In order to find out what drives Elans relentless desire for innovation, we went to Elans HQ to have a talk with the team responsible for, among other things, carving skis and the unique Amphibio profile.

Bloke is a remote plateau in south-eastern Slovenia with an average elevation of 800 m above sea level. Known for its long winters and frequent snow, the locals coined a proverb describing perfectly the local climate: On Bloke weve got nine months of winter and three months of cold. Little wonder then, the locals developed special 1,50 m long and 15 cm wide wooden Bloke skis as early as the 17th Century and used them to go the shop, the church, the neighbouring village or when hunting. But even back then skis were used for fun as well! Pure function is at the heart of Elans beginnings as well. In 1945, at the end of World War ll, twelve craftsmen and engineers produce several hundred pairs of lighweight, durable wooden skis for Partisan troops and helped them move swiflty on snow and utlimately survive battle after battle. Formally, Elan is established by Rudi Fingar, a visionary and an audacious ski jumper, who recorded a 95 meters jump in 1941. After only three years, Elan is a recognized manufacturer and is already exporting skis to the US. The Fifties and the Sixties are marked by the product range expansion, which in addition to skis now includes sailing boats, tennis and badminton rackets, table-tennis equipment, ice picks, mountain rescue gear, racing and recreational sleights and water skis. The 1970s are the years the brand name Elan really starts to shine, thanks to the Swed-

ish wunderkind and skiing legend Ingemar Stenmark. Still the record holder for most World Cup victories of all time (86 to be exact), Ingemar achieves this fantastic result on Elan skis, from the first to his last race. Its no coincidence the next decade Elan becomes one of the biggest ski manufacturers in the world and in 1984 168 racers in various disciplines are equipped with Elan skis, among others the Slovenian skiing legend and one of the few men who succeeded in defeating Ingemar, Bojan Kriaj. In the next decade, Elan added another innovation to its long list and this time caused a major revolution: the introduction of shaped carving skis was arguably the most important novelty in the contemporary skiing industry. As every innovation creates the need for new innovations, Elan comes up with several new solutions in the following years, from Fusion, the first integrated binding system, to WaveFlex, the best optimiziation of soft flex and torsional stiffness and the latest Amphibio, featuring an unprecedented combination of rockered and cambered profile on the outside and inside ski. Influenced by the zeal of local people, inspired by the passion of Elans customers and empowered by the ingenuity of Elans employees and ambassadors Elan will continue to shape the future of skiing. With every perfect turn on Elan skis, grateful customers will always take special pride in this brand.

ELAN SKIS HISTORY

MADE IN THE SKIING HOMELAND

6

Elan originates from Slovenia, the country on the sunny side of the Alps. Its geographical features have been playing a huge role in the emergence of Europes modern-day skiing technique as well as the establishment of Elan.

1
1. CAMBER Think of the cambered profile as an arch, stretching from tip to tail, just like the arch on your foot. Unlike rocker, the cambered profile has been around for a while and its featured solely on on-piste skis as it provides an instrumental benefit for hard, icy slopes - when pressed, the skis edge holds well throughout the turn and lets you keep full control.

Why it works: the cambered skis, when pressed during a turn, keep the whole edge lenght in contact with snow and consequently the ski grips like mad and doesnt let go. 2. ROCKER

6
ELAN SKIS TECH FEATURES

ROCKER VS. CAMBER AND WHY IT MATTERS

No technology have caused so much turmoil among skiing professionals since the emergence of the shaped carving skis. In order to shed some light on the matter, weve decided to try and explain it in plain language. With some pictures. If you need proof this subject really is super hot, just check your trusted ski shop and youll bump into a zillion different variations and combinations. In order to make sense of it all, first we have to understand the characteristics and benefits of the cambered and the rockered profile.

Rocker is derived from watersports, then introduced first to snowboards and later freeride skis in order to stay afloat on virgin snow. Rocker is beneficial on on-piste skis as well, as it brings an important advantage - lifted tips and tails ensure easier turn initiation - so you need less energy in the initial phase of the turn. Why it works: as the tip and tail of the ski are lifted from snow, the skis edge is not in contact on its full length, but 15 - 20% length less. 3. AMPHIBIO, THE ELANS SOLUTION As you could see, theres a benefit for each of the two, camber and rocker. Yet, if you consider the modern skiing technique, you need both of them. This is why Elan developed Amphibio, the only technology on the market which doesnt compromise neither on easier turning, nor on better edge hold. Why it works: The Amphibio technology works best because it brings the benefits of rocker and camber together, precisely where and when you need it. On the outside ski you need edge hold, while the inside ski benefits from easier turning; thats why skiing on Amphibio makes you ski better, faster and in complete confidence.

9
Elan invited more than 200 opinion leaders, journalists, dealers and retailers from eleven countries (Austria, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Switzerland and obivously Slovenia) to world renowned Slden, where they had the privilege to test the latest 2012/13 Amphibio skis. Dubbed Elan Innovation Days, the event was concieved to give a better understanding of Elans thinking behind some of next seasons most important innovations. During the first day participants revelled in the hotels spa and wellness facilities and attended a short presentation, followed by a slow-food dinner. But it was the second day everyone got powered up. Slden, the traditional FIS World Cup season opener awaited with immaculate snow, picture perfect conditions and the chance to ride with Elans ambassadors and world-class skiers in the likes of Olympic medalist Christian Mayer, Californian bad boy Glen Plake, Slovenian skiing legend Bojan Kriaj and lady ambassador Urka Hrovat. After gearing up with new Amphibios at Elans Test Center on the bottom of the Rettenbach glacier, everyone got on the top, 3.250 meters above sea level. No time for contemplating the postcard-like panorama, as everyone rushed down for the first of many runs that day. No matter which model had been tested, the overall feedback was unanimously enthusiastic. A comment stuck in particular, as it came from two former racers. Theyve found the Amphibio skis with dual titanium reinforcements as the perfect skis for former racers and the only choice possible after skiing on proper racing gear. As Christian Mayer was involved in the development of the Amphibio technology from the very beginning, we asked him what in his view is its main benefit. You feel as a better skier immediately the skis are easy in the turns with a lot of edge grip. As we set to combine both the rocker and camber construction, this was exactly our goal. And we did a good job., said the Austrian champion. As a Slden regular during his competitive years, Christian was particularly happy to visit: Every time I come around, I enjoy meeting my friends and talk about the days when I was training here. I had some good races here, as well. Glen Plake is a completely different breed. Skiing moguls, touring, backcountry or groomed slopes, its impossible to categorize him, so its best to refer him as simply a skier. As a newly certified skiing instructor, Glen skied a lot on Amphibio skis lately and got to know them pretty well. For Glen Amphibio skis are high performance skis, but easy to ski: Usually you got those skis, which require a lot of energy, a lot of technique to feel the bottom part of the turn lets be honest, the bottom part is the funnest part but Amphibio dont. Plus they make the top of the turn very, very easy. There are a lot of good skis when going slow, but few which are still great when going fast. With Amphibio you can continue to push it.. As a dedicated skier, Glen always knew skiing held something greater for him. When asked, if he found it and what was it, he replied: Definitely, as I tried all different styles, I found I could have fun skiing in an unorganized fashion. Thats whats is all about..

ELAN SKIS REPORTAGE

A TURN TO THE BEST

Its a hard job, but someones gotta do it!, went through our minds while speeding down a perfectly prepared slope on Sldens Tiefenbach glacier, just minutes after two snowcats finished grooming. For the Elan people this might be just another day at the office, well, for the rest of us, it was the ideal assignment.

10
Skiing held something big for Slovenian skiing legend Bojan Kriaj, as well. As one of the most successful Slovenian skiers of all time, he caused such an euphoria when competing in the 1980s, teachers even interrupted classes just to let kids cheer for him. To good effect, as he is one of the few skiers who manage to defeat Ingemar Stenmark, besides winning the slalom World Cup in 1986, which was the only discipline not won by Pirmin Zurbriggen. After the end of his competing career, he promised himself two things to ski only with boots one size bigger and never again in bad weather. When asked about Amphibio, he reveals: The Amphibio skis really got under my skin. They are giving me everything I expect from skis nowadays.. After two days full of action, skiing and interesting conversations with world class skiers, we could come up with only one possible conclusion Amphibio skis really are top notch, honest skis, the result of Elans passion and innovative spirit, which was very much present during the event in Slden. So, whenever you get the chance, test them on snow and experience it for yourself!

ELAN SKIS FUSION SYSTEM
Freeflex Wide binding hold The wide binding hold allows for better stability and it maximizes the force transition from boot to ski edge, maximizing edge grip, but at the same time allows a fast and dynamic transition from edge to edge.

FUSION THE ENERGY BOOSTER

The brand new Fusion binding system is a remarkable upgrade to all the proven benefits of the previous versions: performance, easy handling, weight reduction. When combined, these benefits bring an energy boost to every skiing session, enabling skiers to save energy in between runs and use it on the slope, skiing better and skiing longer. The new Fusion, designed by the Porsche Design Studio, is featured in the WaveFlex Race, All Mountain and W Studio Series.

The central binding fixation and special plate sliders enable the binding to move freely when the ski is flexing. The bending line of skis is therefore continuous, allowing full control in every turn.

3. LIGHTWEIGHT 330g - 660g

weight reduction per pair: 330g - 660g / 15% A special construction design makes this binding system much lighter and at the same time delivers better stability, better power transmition and full control.

NO COMPROMISE BETWEEN ROCKER AND CAMBER

A compromise never goes all the way - it stops in the middle. Take the rocker/camber trend. The skiing industry might be all fired up about profiles, but the majority of the competitors play it safe and compromise either on edge grip or soft flex. Not Elan, who always walks the extra mile to deliver real benefits, without compromise to edge grip or easy turning.

The destination, Folgefonna is a remote complex of three glaciers on the Norwegian peninsula, and home to a summer ski resort. Yes, Norwegians divide their resorts in winter and summer resorts. Why? After massive snowfalls in winters its literally impossible to access elevated summer resorts, as the roads are usually inaccessible. The intrepid team included the locals Klaus Finne, Sjur Saetren, the latest addition to Elans freeskiers team Sig Tveit, in addition to Slovenian freestyler Bine alohar and US-based Chris Laker. Last but not least, a big up to Elans Rok Dokl, who came up with the idea, gathered the riders and made it all happen. After thousands of kilometers, hectolitres of coffee on shady gas stations and millions of killed insects on the windscreen, theyve

made it to destination. Next stop - the glacier! Theyve found a large boulder that needed just a lil adjustment, so got on with it. When everything was set, Klaus, Bine, Sjur and Chris began a killer session and carried on and on, until theyve used the last drop of energy. The amazing backdrop with the midnight sunlight and clouds covering the valley beneath created a scenery out of this world. As you can imagine, days filled with amazing mid-summer sessions, quarter pipes, unforgettable views, BBQ dinners, trampoline sessions and some diving pass super quickly and it was time to head south again. Norways mid-summer dream came to an end, but the memories of shared moments, epic landscape and awesome riding will remain, as the sun on the Norwegian summer sky.

The outer shell of all Elan helmets produces by the inmold methods is made from ceramic. This polycarbonate possesses astonishing properties: although it is very thin and light in weight, it is extremely resistant to breaking and scratching and is UVstable and antistatic.

INMOLD TECHNOLOGY In-mold technology is the name of a process whereby the inner shell of the helmet is formed by means of foam applied under high pressure and great heat beneath of outer shell. The firm bond creates an extremely stable helmet structure while at the same time saving on weight. Especially under mechanical forces, e.g. during a fall onto a pointed object, an in-mold helmet provides better protection than one which has only been glued in certain places.

STANDARD CE EN 1077 The CE test in compliance with the EN 1077 standard represents the toughest testing conditions for ski helmets at this time. Among the other things, shock absorption, penetration by a pointed object (simulating the tip of a ski pole), the belt system and field of view are tested. All Elan ski helmets meet the requirements of the current CE EN 1077 European Standard.

ERGONOMIC STRAP CLOSURE All Elan helmets are equipped with the ergonomically shaped ergonomic strap closure. The anti-twist, multi-stage automatic catch can be used single-handed and it cannot open in case of fall, thus offering optimal safety. Furthermore, the ergonomic strap closure can be operated intuitively with one hand only. It is therefore possible to loosen the chin strap when going up the mountain and tighten it quickly before skiing down.

Fit SISTEM TECHICAL FEATURE

On Elan ski helmets with removable earpads the two earpads can be removed in seconds. In warm, sunny weather or when skiing in spring, the wearer has a new, free skiing experience without the protective function being impaired. And if it gets colder the pads are simply reattached to the helmet by means of a snap lock or press stud.

84 CORE TORSION & FLEX CONSTRUCTION REINFORCEMENT

85

Response Frame Woodcore Response Frame Woodcore is a unique and innovative tip-totail laminated woodcore featuring direct power transmission and optimal torsional stability thanks to the combination of a hardwood frame around a softer wood centre.

Laminated woodcore This tip-to-tail laminated woodcore is specially shaped for each model and size, Using different wood types in various combinations allows adjustment of flex pattern for different uses. This extremely responsive and highly durable woodcore transmits power directy to the edges and allows versatility on various slope conditions.

Power Woodcore Power woodcore consists of wooden stringers vertically connected with laminates that form power frame inside the synthetic core. The power frame enables higher torsional stability combined with enhanced responsiveness. Furthermore, this construction generates better edge hold in tip and tail area and features uniform ski flex.

Dual Woodcore Dual woodcore features two symmetrical wooden stringers placed on outer edges of the ski core. Such construction enables improved power transmission and edge hold while still keeping ski easy to handle in various snow conditions

WaveFlex WaveFlex is characterized by a waved profile, which provides smooth longitudinal flex for easy turning and torsional stability for edge grip at the same time. Never before has a ski design allowed combination of both characteristics together in one ski.

RST RST opis, kot ga imamo na spletu: The vertical sidewalls deliver optimum edge hold from tip-to-tail and a direct transfer of power to the edges at high speed.

SST Sidewall Construction features a vertically placed ABS material above the edges from tip to tail of the ski. Sidewall offers direct power transmission from the skiers foot to the edge for control and stability at speeds and provides acceleration out of the turns.

PST Partial Sidewall Technology combines cap construction for lightweight and smooth turning and sidewall construction for power performance with edge grip under foot.Powerful when needed and playful when wanted.

Dual Ti The woodcore is sandwiched with two layers of titanium. Dual TI empowers the skis with enhanced edge control in all snow conditions, ensures a progressive flex pattern and superior responsiveness.

XTi Special light construction for high performance wide platform skis. One layer of titanium enhances edge control while longitudinal carbon fibers provide responsiveness and smooth transition in turns which is needed in wider skis.

Comprex Woodcore This core consists of lightweight compressed woodcore in middle section providing enhanced edge-to-edge responsiveness and more effortless carving.

Synflex Core A lightweight synthetic core featuring optimal ex distribution. Elans Synex Core boasts varying densities along the length of the ski for supreme performance levels

Channel Woodcore Superlight core with air channels along the complete laminated woodcore enables lower weight and smoother flex pattern. This unique construction is combined with thin alu profile on Elans Mountain Series.

Nomex woodcore A Touring ski-specic woodcore featuring a lightweight but torsionally rigid Nomex honeycomb structure in the center section of the core. Combined with a tip-to-tail woodcore, including durable beech along the edges and lightweight poplar in the middle sections.

Express Designed to optimize the transfer of energy from the skier to the ski, the patented Express technology enables improved edge hold and harmonious turns.

Monoblock Special monoblock construction brings laminates completely to the edge of the ski creating a torsion box. This provides superior power transmission and enhanced torsional stability.

Full Power Cap Full Power Cap construction is lighter, easier to turn and forgiving.

Bridge Reducing weight and enhancing the performance, Bridge technology does it all. Ultra thin woodcore profile is reinforced with bridge inserts from tip to tail providing torsional stability and unparalleled power transfer to the edges.

Mono Ti The skis responsiveness is enhanced with a single layer of titanium positioned on top of the woodcore. The durability of the flex pattern is protected through the introduction of MonoTitanium to the sides of the ski.

Lithium As the lightest and most temperature-resistent metal known to man, Lithium is used to great effect as a ski reinforcement without adding any unwanted weight.

Trulite Woodcore Lightweight, women specific tip-to-tail woodcore, made of carefully selected wood types and specially tailored to the needs of each target group.

Dualite Woodcore Light and lively woodcore composed of wood stringers and light synthetic core. Such construction enables improved power transmission and edge hold while still keeping ski easy to handle in various snow conditions.

Monolite Core A lightweight synthetic core with unique, thinner profile. Lower core density brings less weight and harmonic flex pattern for easier turning.

Wavelight Waves enable soft flex and great stability in the turn. Due to specific shape of the waves they make the skis thinner and lighter.

Heel Support sidewall For easy turn execution and better support throughout the turn. It also ensures easy control.

Thin Alu profile The thin aluminium prole is specically developed for Elans freeride skis. By printing directly on the aluminium cosntruction we have achieved the thinnest profile on the market. Skis have reduced weight for outstanding otation and versatility, while maintaining maximum responsiveness and optimized flex with torsional stability.

Carbon Carbon is a lightweight and strong material that provides additional support and reinforcement in the part where needed the most.

Fibreglass Positioned either above or below the ski core, the Fibreglass reinforcement optimizes the ex pattern and enhances torsional stiffness.

SYSTEM

Fusion The Fusion System is the worlds rst trully integrated ski binding system, paving the way for faster turn initiation, smoother flex and easier turning and enhanced edge-toedge responsiveness.

Quick Trick The Quick Trick System has an improved locking system that makes possible to adjust and readjust a boot sole length in a very fast and easy way. Freeflex makes the skiing smooth and easy with improved stability. Light materials and lean body design additionaly grant lightweight skis for womens and junior models.
