Lab 1: Switch CLI Exec Mode
Overview
This lab guides you through the process of navigating through a switch command-line interface, specifically the user and enable exec modes.

This lab uses only the switch (SW1) with no activities on the other devices.

Detailed Lab Steps


Step 1. Step 2.

Connect to SW1 from the simulator user interface. Connect to SW1s console port using the simulator. The window will look like a terminal emulator with a cursor at the bottom of the screen and the center of the screen mostly blank.

From the simulators terminal-emulator screen, press Enter. If you do not see a command prompt, press Enter until you do. Press the ? key to look at the available commands. Write down the most interesting two or three commands that you see listed.

Step 6.

Try to enter privileged mode using the enable command. Are you prompted for a password?

Step 7.

When you are in privileged mode, use help by pressing the ? key to see the current list of commands. Are there more commands than were shown in user mode?

Step 8.

Use help (?) in both user mode and enable mode to confirm that help lists the configure and reload commands when in enable mode but not when in user mode. To do so, move back to user mode by entering the disable command, and then use the enable command to move back to enable mode.

Hint or Answer

The simulator should display a prompt with switch> after you press Enter. If it does not appear, click inside the window to make that window the focus of your computer desktop, and press Enter again. This lab begins with the switch having all default configuration, which means that no passwords are configured. You should see more commands listed when using ? in enable mode than when using ? in user mode. For example, the configure and reload commands will not be shown when getting help in user mode.
