operating safety switches, circuit breakers and contactors

Total operating safety is guaranteed in the SM6 range by the division of cubicles into five distinct compartments and the simplicity of switching operations enhanced by functional interlock systems.

Simplicity of operations c the entire operating mechanism is centralised in the operating-mechanism compartment; c operating and protection systems are mounted in the operating-mechanism compartment of the Fluarc SFset circuit breaker; c levers require little force to operate; c opening and closing operations using levers, push-buttons and trip units (accessories); c position of disconnector(s) or switch indicated by animated mimic panel; c voltage presence monitored by neon lights connected to the capacitive dividers on the cable heads.

Disconnection and positive-break indication The position indicator placed directly on the shaft of the moving assembly dependably signals the position of the contacts due to a direct and reliable mechanical transmission system. The position of the inspection windows in cubicle panels may vary depending on future modifications in specifications and standards.

gamme SM6 description (cont.)

Cubicles are made up of five compartments separated by metal or insulating partitions.

switchgear compartment (switch and/or disconnector)

busbar compartment

This compartment is separated from the busbar compartment and the connection compartment by the enclosure surrounding the switch, the disconnector and the earthing switch.

The three insulated busbars are parallelmounted. Connection is made to the upper pads of the enclosure using a field distributor with integrated captive screws. Ratings 400 - 630 - 1250 A.

14

connection and switchgear compartment (circuit breaker)

operating-mechanism compartment

low-voltage compartment

The network cables are connected to the terminals of the switch and the earthing switch. Transformer cables are connected to the lower fuse holder or to the downstream connection pads of the circuit breaker. Cables may have either: c simplified terminations for dry-type one or three-core cables*; c heat-shrink ends for dry-type or paperinsulated cables*. With basic equipment, the maximum allowable cross-section for cables is: c 630 mm2 for 1250 A incoming or outgoing units. c 240 mm2 for 400 - 630 A incoming or outgoing cubicles. c 95 mm2 for transformer protection cubicles incorporating fuses. The earthing switch must be closed before the cubicle may be accessed. The reduced depth of the cubicle makes for easy connection of all phases. A stud incorporated in the field distributor makes it possible to position and secure the cableend lug with a single hand.

This compartment contains the various operating functions for the: c switch and earthing switch; c disconnector(s); c circuit breaker; c contactor; and the voltage indicators. The operating-mechanism compartment for the switch, earthing switch and disconnector(s) may be accessed with the cables and busbars energised and without isolating the substation. It also enables easy installation of padlocks, locks and standard LV accessories (auxiliary contacts, trip units, motors, etc.).

If the switch operating mechanism is motorised, this compartment is equipped with a terminal block and LV fuses. It may be enlarged by adding an enclosure with a door on the top of the cubicle. These compartments may be accessed with the cables and busbars energised and without isolating the substation.

SF6 range description (cont.) SF6 switchgear

SF6, the switchgear manufacturers gas

F

switch or disconnector and earthing switch

The three rotating contacts are placed in an enclosure filled with gas to a relative pressure of 0.4 bars (400 hp). This system offers maximum operating reliability: c gas tightness The enclosure filled with SF6 gas satisfies sealed pressure system requirements and seal tightness is always checked in the factory. c operating safety v the switch may be in one of three positions, closed, open or earthed, representing a natural interlocking system that prevents incorrect operation. Moving-contact rotation is driven by a fastacting mechanism that is independent of the action of the operator. v The device combines the breaking and disconnection functions. v The earthing switch placed in the SF6 has a short-circuit making capacity, in compliance with standards. v any accidental over-pressures are eliminated by the opening of the safety membrane, in which case the gas is directed toward the back of the unit, thus avoiding projection or other related phenomena in front. c breaking principle The exceptional qualities of SF6 gas are used to extinguish the electrical arc. To increase cooling of the arc, a relative movement is created between the arc and the gas. The arc appears when the fixed and moving contacts separate. The combination of the current and a magnetic field created by a permanent magnet provokes arc rotation around the fixed contact, resulting in arc extension and cooling until it is extinguished at current zero. The distance between the fixed and moving contacts is then sufficient to withstand the recovery voltage. This system is both simple and sure and also provides improved electrical endurance due to very low wear on contacts.
2 6

SM6 switch-disconnectors and earthing switches and the SFset and SF1 circuit breakers use sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) for insulation and breaking. The active parts are placed in an insulating enclosure in accordance with the definition of IEC 56/Appendix EE (1987 edition) for sealed pressure systems. SM6 devices offer remarkable characteristics: s long service life; s maintenance-free active parts; s high electrical endurance; s very low over-voltage level; s operating safety.

Fluarc SFset or SF1 circuit breaker

The Fluarc SFset or SF1 circuit breaker is made up of three separate poles mounted on a structure supporting the operating mechanism. Each pole-unit houses all the active elements in an insulating enclosure filled with gas to a relative pressure of 0.5 bars (500 hp). This system offers maximum operating reliability: c gas tightness The enclosure filled with SF6 gas satisfies sealed pressure system requirements and seal tightness is always checked in the factory. c operating safety As for switch-units, accidental overpressures are eliminated by the opening of the safety membrane. c breaking principle The circuit breaker is based on the SF6 gas autocompression principle. The inherent qualities of SF6 and the soft break resulting from this technique reduce switching over-voltages. v precompression When the contacts begin to open, the piston slightly compresses the SF6 gas in the pressure chamber. v arcing period The arc then forms between the arcing contacts and the piston continues its downward movement. A small quantity of gas, directed by the insulating nozzle, is injected into the arc. The cooling of the arc is thus achieved through forced convection for the interruption of low currents, however, during the interruption of high currents, thermal expansion is responsible for the transfer of the hot gases toward the cold parts of the pole unit. Toward current zero, the distance between the two arcing contacts is sufficient for final interruption of the current due to the dielectric properties of the SF6 gas. v sweeping over-stroke The moving parts finish their travel whereas the cold gas injection continues until the contacts are completely open.

SM6 range description (cont.) SF6 switchgear (cont.)

Rollarc 400 or 400 D contactor

The three phases are placed in an enclosure filled with SF6 gas to a relative pressure of 2.5 bars (2500 hp). This system offers maximum operating reliability: c gas tighness The enclosure satisfies sealed pressure system requirements and seal tightness is always checked in the factory. c operating safety Accidental over-pressures are eliminated by the opening of the safety membrane. c breaking principle The contactor implements on the rotating arc technique using SF6. Rotation of the arc between the circular arcing contacts is driven by an electromagnetic field. The field is produced by a solenoid through which the current to be interrupted flows at the moment of opening. The rotating movement cools the arc by forced convection. At the beginning of the opening operation, the main contacts and the arcing contacts are closed. The main circuit is cut by the separation of the main contacts. The arcing contacts are still closed. Separation of the arcing contacts closely follows that of the main contacts. The arc is subjected to the electromagnetic field produced by the arc-quenching coil, proportional to the current to be interrupted. The arc rotates rapidly, driven by the electromagnetic forces and is thus cooled by forced convection. Due to the phase shift between the current and the magnetic field, this force is still significant at zero current. At zero current, the gap between the two arcing rings recovers its initial dielectric strength due to the intrinsic properties of SF6.

motor protection with CRM units selection of fuses

The current rating of fuses installed in CRM units depends on: c motor current rating In, c starting current Id, c frequency of starts. The fuses rating is calculated such that a current equal to twice the starting current does not blow the fuse within period equal to the starting time. The adjacent table indicated the ratings wich should be used, based on the following assumptions: c direct on-line startup, c Id/In 6, c pf = 0.8 (P < 500 kW) or 0.9 (P > 500 kW), c = 0.9 (P < 500 kW) or 0.94 (P > 500 kW), The indicated values are for Fusarc fuses (to DIN standard 43-625). Example: Consider a 950 kW motor at 5 kV. In = P e . U . . pf = 130 A

Access to fuses Access is via the front with the front panel removed. Fuses may be removed without tools by simply pulling them forward. The field deflector pivots and automatically returns to its position.

Replacement of fuses When fault clearance results in one or two blown fuses, it is still common practice to replace only the blown fuses. However, though the remaining fuse(s) may apparently be in good condition, their operating characteristics are generally reduced due to the short-circuit. If nonblown fuses remain in service, they may blow even at very low over-current values. In systems where continuity of service is of importance, it is recommended to replace all three fuses, in compliance with IEC recommendation 282.1.

floor preparation
Units may be installed on ordinary concrete floors, with or without trenches depending on the type and cross-section of cables. Required civil works are identical for all 400 - 630 A units. To reduce the depth of trenches by 400 mm (for the 400- 630 A units), which in many cases is sufficient to eliminate trenches altogether, units may be installed on a concrete footing prepared when pouring the floor. Installation of 400 - 630 A units on a footing: c enables installation in rooms where trenches are not possible; c in no way affects substation switching operation. For the 1250 A units DM1-A and DM1-W, a floor void must be foreseen.

fixing of units
With each other The units are simply bolted together to form the MV switchboard (bolts supplied). Busbar connections are made using a torque wrench set to 28 mN. On the floor c for switchboards comprising up to three units, the four corners of the switchboard must be secured to the floor using: v M8 bolts (not supplied) screwed into nuts set into the floor using a sealing pistol; v screw rods grouted into the floor; c for switchboards comprising more than three units, the number and position of fixing points depends on local criteria (earthquake withstand capacities, etc.). Each unit may be fixed as necessary. c position of fixing holes b depends on the width of units:

Add to heights: (1) 450 mm for low-voltage enclosures for control/monitoring and protection functions. To ensure uniform presentation, all units (except GIM and GEM) may be equipped with low-voltage enclosures. (2) depending on the busbar configuration in the VM6 unit, two types of extension units may be used: - to extend a VM6 DM12 or DM23 unit, use an extension unit with a depth of 1060 mm; - for all other VM6 units, a depth of 920 mm is required.
