M88A1 MEDIUM RECOVERY VEHICLE


The M88A1 recovery vehicle is a medium full-track-laying low silhouette, diesel-powered vehicle. It is powered by a 12 cylinder, 4 cycle air cooled engine, model AVDS-1790-2DR The transmission is a combination differential steer, and brake system; gears-three forward and one reverse. It has a crew of three; Driver, mechanic and Commander. The M88A1 is equipped to assist in repairing disabled vehicles under general field conditions. It travels easily over rough terrain. Has a maximum speed of 26 miles per hour and an cruising range of 300 miles with a 400 gallon fuel tank capacity. Recovery of medium and light combat vehicles is it main purpose.

The Hull and Cab assembly armor protects the crew and equipment against small arm fire, medium artillery, shell fragments and 20 lb anti-tank mines. The vehicle is divide into three parts: Crew Compartment, Hydraulic Compartment and Engine Compartment.

The vehicle is equipped with a main and an auxiliary hydraulic system used for recovery and maintenance operations. These systems power the spade, boom, main winch, hoist winch, refuel pump and the hydraulic impact wrench. The main purpose of the auxiliary hydraulic system is to allow emergency retrieval of hydraulic systems in the event of main engine failure.

The M88A1 is also equipped with a main and auxiliary generating system. The primary purpose of the auxiliary system is to charge the vehicle batteries when they are too low to start the main engine.

The Spade is used during all winch operations and hoisting operations over 6 tons to help stabilize the vehicle. The main winch is located near the spade and is used to pull disabled vehicles during recovery operations. The hoisting boom works with the hoist winch which is used to lift disabled vehicles and heavy loads for recovery and maintenance operations. The maximum load the hoist winch is capable of handling is 50,000 lbs using 200 ft. of steel cable. The hoisting boom is a modified A-frame located on the top of the vehicle. The lockout brakes are also used when lifting over 6 tons to prevent damage to the vehicle.

Main Winch cable size 1-1/4 inches and 200 ft. long with a capability to pull 90,000 lbs, ( Bare Drum 90,000 lbs. at 20 fpm Full Drum 51,400 lbs. at 13 fpm.

Electrical System is equipped with six 12-volt batteries connected in series parallel. 300 AMP Generator and 28volt regulator.

Do not keep boom in full-raised position for extended periods of time. Failure of hydraulic system could occur, causing boom to free-fall.

Always wear leather gloves when handling winch cable. Never allow cable to run through hands.

Never use winch with less than three wraps on the drum.

Safety Precautions

Led-acid battery gases can explode. Do not smoke, have open flame or make sparks around batteries. Remove all jewelry such as rings, ID tags, bracelets, etc.
