An up close look at health care careers

Students describe academy experience
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Eight Menomonee Falls High School students got an in-hospital view of healthcare careers during a three week "academy" program over the summer. Several of the students spoke about their experiences during a presentation at the Sept. 23 Menomonee Falls School Board meeting. Under the three-week academy, students went through various rotations of hospital operations. The students then gave final presentations before hospital staff members, parents and high school staff member. The presentations included posters that were created by the students. Teacher Jennifer Tarcin noted that the hospital started the program with Menomonee Falls in 2007. The program has since been expanded to include separate academies with Germantown and Hamilton students. Tarcin explained that the program is open to junior and senior students at the high school, and the number of students who can participate is limited to eight students for each school. The selection process includes having students write two essays and provide two letters of recommendations. Interested students are then interviewed by a district team. Students in the academy are required to have perfect attendance. The Menomonee Falls students who participated the academy were Alyssa Callen, Erin Otzelberger, Emily Jacobs, Katie Kolz, Brooke Schiedmeyer, Surekha Nadenla and Hannah Crownover. During a presentation to the board, Otzelberger described the academy as an incredible experience. This experience really opened my eyes to all the different options that I have, Otzelberger said. She said she enjoyed rotations in the Cancer Care Center, occupational therapy and nursing. She said she entered the academy thinking she wanted to be a nurse. Otzelberger noted that when nurses told patients she was considering a career in nursing, the patients said they were grateful for the work of the nurses. She said the academy has solidified her career goal to be a nurse. Jacobs said the experience taught her about the many careers in healthcare. Jacobs rotation included observations of care in orthopedics, nursing, surgery and speech therapy. She said a highlight was watching a double knee replacement during the surgery rotation, in which she observed how everyone works together in a surgery setting. Kolz said her goals going into the academy were to listen and observe, ask questions as often as possible and pin-

The Kettle Moraine Symphony has announced its 2013-2014 season, which will take audiences on Musical Journeys with four live concert performances starting in December. The following report was taken from records at the Menomonee Falls Police Department. Battery A 45-year-old man was arrested for battery-domestic violence related Sept. 14 in the W15000 block of Menomonee Avenue. Police responded to the residence at 5:52 p.m. when a female subject reported that her husband had assaulted her by grabbing her arm and slapping her across the back of the head. Operating while intoxicated A 42-year-old Milwaukee woman was arrested for operating while intoxicated-second offense and possession of cocaine at 2:02 a.m. Sept. 14 following a traffic stop at Lisbon Road and Green View Avenue. She was also cited for suspended registration and failure to install an ignition interlock device. Warrants A 28-year-old Milwaukee man was taken into custody on a Brown Deer warrant at 6:36 a.m. Sept. 13 following a traffic stop at Main Street and Hoyt Drive. A 38-year-old Menomonee Falls woman was taken into custody on a state Department of Corrections warrant at 9:08 a.m. Sept. 13 at her residence in the W15000 block of Menomonee Avenue. Police had gone to the womans residence in an attempt to locate another individual. A 41-year-old Menomonee Falls man was taken into custody on three Waukesha County family court warrants at 1:13 p.m. Sept. 13 at his residence in the N9000 block of Garden Avenue. Retail theft Police are investigating the theft of baby formula and womens clothing from Target, N95 W17707 Shady Lane, Sept. 8. Five female subjects left the store without paying for $324.11 in merchandise. Some of the items were abandoned in the store parking lot before the women fled the scene.

Washington County to hold Clean Sweep collection Oct. 12

Washington County will hold its next Full Service Clean Sweep Saturday, Oct. 12, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Washington County Highway Facility, 900 Lang St., West Bend. This is an opportunity for county residents to properly dispose or recycle unwanted hazardous chemicals, electronic goods, pharmaceutical medication and used tires. There will be drive-through collection stations for convenience. A $10 pre-registration fee is required for the hazardous waste and electronic goods; participation is limited to 250 vehicles per event. Pre-registration is not required for the drug collection. The used tire collection is also unlimited; however, a maximum of 20 tires will be accepted per participant, and per tire disposal fees apply. To pre-register, one can download a form from www.co.washington.wi.us/cleansweep; stop in at the Land and Water Conservation Division, 333 E. Washington St., West Bend to submit cash or check; or by calling (262) 3354808. The following items will not be accepted: television sets, appliances, latex paint, oil, batteries, needles/sharps; radioactive items; smoke detectors; cylinders; and gas grill propane tanks. For the annual Condella's Coats for Kids campaign, parent can drop off slightly used children's coats at all Fox Bros Piggly Wiggly stores now through Saturday, Oct. 12. Fox Bros is a partner in the 2013 Condella's Coats for Kids campaign organized by WITI FOX 6. This is the 28th year of the campaign that has helped thousands and thousands of area children. To celebrate the campaign, FOXTOBERFEST will be held at all Fox Bros stores Oct. 12. Special sales, tastings and activities for the family including Guess the Pumpkin's Weight and children's coloring contests will be a part of the festivities. In conjunction with FOXTOBERFEST, Fox Bros is asking that families remember !others and donate coats. "Providing a coat can make a difference for a family living in poverty," said Major Deborah Sjogren, Milwaukee Salvation Army. "As daily living costs rise, every dollar counts and a free coat allows for dollars to be spent in other areas such as food, rent or heat." Vince Condella, WITI FOX 6 Chief Meteorologist, has been leading the campaign since the beginning. "'I am counting on the generosity of everyone again this year," said Condella. "This entire effort is completely dependent on one person helping another by donating a coat." Partners with WITI FOX 6 in Condella's Coats for Kids includes ITU who donates the washing of the coats and Bonded Transportation Solutions, who pick up coats at the donation sites. Steinhafels, Johnson Bank and Subway Restaurants are drop off sites and the Salvation Army works with area schools to distribute coats to school children who need them.

Undertaking a home improvement project in several stages

By Tresa Erickson When a large home improvement project looms, like adding a deck or updating your kitchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming. As you write out the supply list, you may find yourself thinking of all the other things you would rather be doing. If you aren't careful, those thoughts can take over and the project moved to the back burner. To avoid this scenario, it may be helpful to look at the project as a series of stages. Say you're updating your kitchen. If you think about everything you have to do from the sanding to the painting to the lighting, you are sure to get overwhelmed and put the kibosh on the whole thing. If, however, you take the time to sit down and stage out the process, you are more likely to proceed with it. So, sit down and make a list of all the tasks that need to be done. Do you plan to change out the lighting? Write that down. Do you plan to paint the walls and cabinets? Write that down. Do you plan to replace the trim? Write that down. Do you plan to add a backsplash? Write that down. Do you plan to change out the countertops? Write that down. Keep going until you have every task listed. Now, take that list and determine what tasks should occur first. Painting, for example, should probably come before the new trim, lighting, backsplash and countertops. That way, you won't have to worry about spilling paint on any of the new items. Once everything is painted, you might want to tackle the trim-your walls and cabinets will then be complete. Next up should be the countertops. Once they're in, you can install the backsplash and the under-the-cabinet lighting. Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry. Get out your calendar and schedule each of the tasks, giving yourself plenty of time to complete each. Don't try to paint everything all in one day. It won't happen. Give yourself a weekend to prep and paint the walls and an extra long weekend to tackle the cabinets. Work on one section of the cabinets at time. Do the lower cabinet bases one day, the upper cabinet bases the next and the cabinet doors the day after that. Wrap everything up on the final day with the installation of the doors and new hardware and whatever touchups may be needed.

Once you have the tasks scheduled, you can start gathering the supplies and preparing for the work ahead. It is important that you have everything you need to complete each task. Multiple trips to the store will slow progress considerably. It is also important that you commit to the schedule and do your best to stick to it. Veer off too many times or try to do too much at once, and you may never get back on track again. You don't want to spend the next five years of your life working on your kitchen, or worse, stop work altogether and end up with a half-finished kitchen. Motivation, of course, is half the battle. If walls getting painted and new lighting going up is not enough to keep you on track, don't hesitate to try something else. Have some friends over to ooh and ah over what you have completed and cheer you on to the next stages, or treat yourself to a movie or dinner for each task you complete. Do whatever is needed to stay motivated. The more progress you make, the more disciplined you will become and the closer you will get to the kitchen you envisioned. Attacking large home improvement projects in stages can make quick work of them. Give it a shot. You just might get the project done and be free for other pursuits.

BBB: Scammers creating identify theft schemes on health care changes

With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, commonly labeled "Obamacare," on the horizon, scammers are finding it to be the latest opportunity to steal peoples identities. "Consumers nationwide are reporting that scammers are calling, claiming they are eligible for health insurance cards, and asking for personal information," said Ran Hoth, CEO/president of the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin. "The BBB advises consumers to ignore these calls. Providing this information to unknown persons is dangerous and puts you at risk for identity theft." The scams work like this: You receive a call from someone claiming to be from the federal government. The scammer says that you have been selected to be part of a group of Americans to receive insurance cards. But before the card can be mailed, your bank account and social security numbers are required. Once they get this information, they can sell it or use it to access your accounts. "Affordable Care Act scammers are able to make consumers think that their calls are legitimate, especially with such a hot topic like Obamacare," Hoth explained. "Consumers need to realize that the government rarely calls individuals. If you receive this type of call, hang up." The BBB offers the following tips to people who experience the affordable healthcare scams: o Hang up the phone. If you get one of these calls, just hang up. You may be tempted to call back, but this will only give the scammer another opportunity to steal your information. Also, be sure not to press any buttons that the scammer instructs. o Never give out personal information. Never give out your bank account numbers, date of birth, credit card number or social security number. o Dont rely on caller ID. Some scammers are able to display a companys name or phone number on the caller ID screen. Dont trust that the information you see is true. o The government rarely communicates via phone calls. Most of the time, the government uses traditional snail mail to communicate to consumers. The government rarely calls, emails or texts, so dont give your information to these types of messages. Legislators promote transitional jobs proposal

Unemployed workers could learn new skills to improve their chances to land a new job under as part of a new jobs package. On Wednesday, Governor Walker outlined his Workforce Development Initiatives to help continue job growth in the state. A key portion of that plan, authored by State Representative Thomas Weatherston (R-Caledonia) and State Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills), will replicate the Transitional Jobs Program in an area with high unemployment. Representative Weatherston said the bill will help unemployed workers get back on their feet. "The transitional jobs program isn't a hand-out, it's a hand-up," Weatherston said, "It gives workers a chance to learn new skills and increase their chances to land a new job. It's an investment in their future." The bill is based on the Transitional Jobs Demonstration Project, a bi-partisan plan aimed at the city of Milwaukee to provide low-income adults with an immediate income and an opportunity to learn new skills. Employers are able to train workers and can hire the workers full-time when their training period is over. From September 2010 to June 2013, 4,074 workers participated in the program. Senator Darling says the bill is a low-risk opportunity to find and train workers for jobs they need filled. "I often hear from employers that job seekers don't have the skills they need," Darling said, "I applaud Governor Walker for including an expansion of the transitional jobs program. It's a proven way to help employers train someone for the jobs that are available. This is a win-win for everyone involved." The Transitional Jobs Demonstration Project ended in June of this year. Due to its success, the program was replaced in the state budget with the Transform Milwaukee Jobs program.

Falls district thanks friends with honors

The School District of Menomonee Falls recognized several organizations and individuals with Friend of Education and Distinguished Service awards during the Sept. 10 annual meeting. The following recognitions were presented during the annual meeting: Lynn Zindl, Friend of Education award: Zindl taught for more than 30 years in the School District of Menomonee Falls and has worked as secretary of the Menomonee Falls Scholarship and Educational Foundation for the past several years. Withe the foundation, she has worked countless hours to put together the annual Scholarship Night drawing hundreds of students, parents, donors and community members. "Wed be lost without her," said Foundation member Cathy Hazzard. Zindl also serves as an active member of the High School Business Department Advisory Board. In that role she has helped facilitate community involvement with various real-world educational initiatives including Reality Check. She was nominated for the Friend of Education award by Cathy Hazzard and the high school Business Department (Sara Burling, Nick Heiting, Jill Hughes, Lisa Kiefer, Jim Nitz, Michelle Oliver and Joe Seaman). As part of the Friend of Award, recipients receive a busscape drawing created by a district elementary student. Zindl received a busscape from Marisa Grzsiak of Ben Franklin Elementary School. LindenGrove Rehabilitative Center, Friend of Education award: Valley View Elementary School regularly teaches to reach out to others. Linden Grove helps put that value into action. The facility allows the schools first-through fifth-grade students to participate with residents in various activities like bingo, bowling, trivia, puzzles, reading buddies, sing-a-longs, arts and crafts and play presentations. Each December Valley View staff donate holiday gifts to the residents, and the students distribute the gifts and bring cheer to LindenGroves annual holiday party. The fifthgrade chorus performs each year for the residents, along with impromptu holiday sing-alongs. Over the past decade, Linden Grove residents have come to Valley View to watch kindergartners fly their kites with their fifthgrade buddies. The culminating event each year is the Linden Grove Carnival,involving all Valley View volunteers in games, clowns, magicians, balloon animals, ice cream, face painting, tattoos and more. Linden Groves partnership has built compassion and under-standing among Valley View students and staff. LindenGrove was nominated for a Friend of Education award by Valley View fifth-grade teacher Marsha Denny. Representatives from LindenGrove received a Busscape drawing from Abbi Nelson of Valley View Elementary School. Al Garcia, Friend of Education award: While serving with the Army in Vietnam, it was Garcias job to send stories to local newspapers about local residents. For almost a decade, Garcia along with Jerry Witt and Joe Campbell have come to the high school to share their experiences. Garcia shares the stories of five friends who lost their lives in Vietnam. Al helps provide a firsthand perspective on the impact of war that textbooks, teachers and videos cannot; he talks to students on a human level and shows them how freedom is indeed not free, the program stated. He was nominated by high school social studies teacher Jodi Mayne. Garcia was presented with a busscape award from Hailey Maas of Shady Lane Elementary School. Jerry Witt, Friend of Education award: As a soldier in Vietnam, Witt was a dog handler who work save countless American lives. In presentations at the high school, Witt shares his stories of missions with Scout and Satan, touching many students who can relate to their relationships with their dogs. Witt and his dog went ahead of soldiers, using the canines keen senses to detect the enemy. In addition, the Menomonee Falls resident participates in the annual Memorial Day Parade and speaks in numerous other schools and for police officers who use dogs He was nominated by high school studies teacher Jodi Mayne and received a Friend of Education busscape award from Aidan Kilbourn of Shady Lane Elementary School. Joe Campbell, Friend of Education award: In presentations to high school students, Campbells humor and humility resonate with students. His candid stories of packing as many children as he could into his jeep to celebrate Christmas in Vietnam helps us comprehend the impact of war on youth. Joe also openly discusses how he, like many Vietnam veterans, battled alcoholism upon their return home. Joe has been sober for 15 years and leads an Alcoholics Anonymous session at the VA every Sunday. He was nominated by high school social studies teacher Jodi Mayne. He received a busscape award from Beth Kathzman of Ben Franklin Elementary School. Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls, Distinguished Service Award: The organizations motto is By providing hope and positive vision, Optimists bring out the best in kids." The club gives scholarships with the thousands of dollars it raises from its annual golf outing; it honors students of the month; it administers oratorical and essay contests for children; it sponsors post prom; it holds sports skills contests, a fishing derby and more. The clubs membership is among the five largest in Optimist International, and we know its commitment to children is second to none. Taste of Menomonee Falls and Trivia Night Oct. 19

For anyone who thinks theyre an expert at history and trivia, the Greater Menomonee Falls Foundation will be holding an event that will allow them to show what they know. The Taste of Menomonee Falls and Trivia Night will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 19 at Knights of Columbus Hall, W164 N9161 Water St., Menomonee Falls. The event will feature a trivia contest, silent auctions and a raffle. In addition, complimentary food will be provided by more than a dozen restaurants. RBG, A.J. OBradys, Cafe Agora, Trysting Place, Pick N Save, Village Bowl and Pepinos are among the restaurants that will be participating in the event. Soft drinks, water and coffee are provided. Sue Jeskewitz, one of the members of the foundation, said she was pleased at the support of the restaurants to support the first-time event. They all said sure, its wonderful, she said. The event will raise funds for the Greater Menomonee Falls Foundation, which is a community foundation focused on providing grants to non-profit organizations that serve the Menomonee Falls area. The Menomonee Falls Historical Society, Menomonee Falls Food Pantry, Childrens Community Center and Camp Pow Wow have been past recipients of grants from the Greater Menomonee Falls Foundation, according to foundation chair Darci Middaugh. Middaugh explained that the Greater Menomonee Falls Foundation transforms donors dreams and desires into reality by providing an effective means for investing in the community meeting needs now and in the future. She explained that the organizations main roles in the community are building endowments, reviewing grant applications, and making grants to qualified nonprofit organizations which benefit the Menomonee Falls area. Middaugh emphasized that non-profits that receive grants from the foundation have to demonstrate that they benefit the Menomonee Falls area. The Taste of Menomonee Falls event will raise funds so the foundations can continue to award grants to the non-profit organizations. Last year, the foundation provided approximately $9,000 in grants to various organizations. Middaugh said that benefits of the foundation are that they do the background work as far as making sure the organizations that receive grants are non-profits. The trivia contest is open to teams of six people at a total cost of $180. Individuals are also welcome at a cost of $30. Second half surge lifts Hamilton past Falls

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Hamilton used a Menomonee Falls miscue to seize the lead Sept. 20 and never looked back on the way to a 42-14 victory. The teams were tied 14-14 after Isaiah Webb ran 57-yards for a touchdown for Hamilton with 1:28 left before halftime. Menomonee Falls initially made inroads into the Hamilton side of the field but were stalled. On fourth down, the long snap sailed over the Falls punter and Hamilton recovered on the 4yard line. Drew Patterson scored on the next play as Hamilton took a 21-14 lead 13 seconds before halftime. Hamilton then scored 21 points in the second half while holding Menomonee Falls scoreless. Hamilton's first second half score came on a 20-yard pass play from Mike Barnes to Tyler Davis at the 11:48 mark of the third quarter. Webb then scored on runs of 61 and 5 yards. Webb led Hamilton on the ground, running 10 times for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Menomonee Falls got on the board first as Christian Almonte ran 67 yards down the sideline to give the Indians a 7-0 lead at the 3:58 mark. Hamilton answered with a drive that ended with a 9-yard run by Drew Patterson with1:01 left in the first quarter. "Hats off to them, they played a fantastic game," Menomonee Falls Coach John Baker said of Hamilton. "They came out and beat us up, they won the game." Baker said the was decided on execution, as his team didn't make some key plays and Hamilton did. Hamilton Coach John Damato said coaches challenged the team to play well in the second half and made several adjustments on offense and defense. Damato conceded that his team didn't have a solid week of practice. "They rose to the occasion, they got off the football and that was evident tonight," Damato said. Menomonee Falls took the lead in the first quarter as Adam Vechart connected with Daniel Dahlke on a 11-yard pass play at the 9:21 mark. Hamilton answered with a drive that ended with a 57-yard run by Webb with 1:28 remaining before halftime. Germantown 49, Milwaukee Lutheran 21:Germantown jumped out to a quick lead against Milwaukee Lutheran and never looked back, defeating the Red Knights 49-21 Sept. 20. Germantown started the game with a 94yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown by Quinn Fliss, the second time Fliss has scored on the opening kickoff this season. The Warhawks ended the quarter with a 10-yard pass play from Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. to Nick Holcomb at the 2:30 mark. Germantown then scored 35 points in the second quarter, with Lawhorn throwing four touchdown passes while Lincoln Gruber returned a fumble 24-yards for score. The Red Knights got on the board at the 7 minute mark of the second quarter as Donovan Rathell connected with Nick Winter on a 57yard pass play. Milwaukee Lutheran then scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters.

Volleyball: Falls wins Watertown tourney

The Menomonee Falls girls volleyball team took home a weekend title and then stayed at the top of the Greater Metro Conference. Menomonee Falls won the Watertown Invite Sept. 21, posting wins over St. Catherine's (25-14, 25-8), Madison LaFollette (25-16, 25-18) and Kettle Moraine Lutheran (20-25, 25-17, 15-7) in pool play and then beating Cedarburg 2518, 25-12 in the semifinal. In the final, Menomonee Falls topped Neenah 25-21, 25-10. Menomonee Falls then stayed undefeated in conference play with a 25-9, 2514, 25-18 win over Brookfield East Sept. 24. In the state coaches poll that came out Sept. 23, Menomonee Falls was ranked first in Division 1 while Germantown received an honorable mention. Germantown posted a 3-1 record at the Pirate Invite held at Pewaukee High School Sept. 21. Germantown posted wins over Pewaukee (25-20, 25-19), Milwaukee Rufus King (25-11, 25-11) and Hartford (16-25, 25-22, 15-12). Germantown lost to Notre Dame Academy 25-18, 17-25, 9-15. Germantown was in second place in the North Shore Conference following a 25-16, 25-18,14-25, 25-22 win at Grafton Sept. 24. Hamilton split its matches at the Milwaukee Lutheran tournament held Sept. 21. Hamilton started the day with a 25-22, 27-25 win over Watertown Luther Prep Sept. 21 but then lost to Shoreland Lutheran, 17-25, 17-25. Hamilton then lost to the host school 19-25, 21-25 but rebounded with a 25-16, 25-17 win over Milwaukee School of Languages. The Chargers finished the day with a 25-23, 16-25, 13-15 loss to Kettle Moraine. Hamilton returned to conference play with a 22-25, 25-16,25-17, 18-25, 15-8 win over West Allis Central Sept. 24.

Cross country: Falls boys second at Angel Invite

The Menomonee Falls boys cross country team finished second at the St. Catherine's Angel Invitational held at UWParkside Sept. 21. Menomonee Falls was led by Jake McMahon, who finished 11th with a time of 16:56.9. He was followed by Kaleb Becker (13th16:59.6), Josh Hindman (19th17:10.4), Ben Maas (35th17:28.2), Jayce Kolinski (62nd, 17:54.8), Dom Carini (75th, 18:12.4) and Brandon Schinker (107th, 18:43.1). The Menomonee Falls girls team finished 21st at the meet. The Germantown boys cross country team placed fourth at the Waukesha South Cross Country Invitational Sept. 20. Germantown was led by Trevor Becker, who finished fifth with a time of 17:03. He was followed by Nick Foti (12th, 17:36), Dan Horanoff (27th, 18:10), Jake DuFrane (35th, 18:22), Korey Hartmann (46th, 18:50), Brady Sheridan (47th, 18:54) and Cory Rhind (62nd, 19:49). Boys soccer: Germantown tops Homestead

Germantown moved into second place in the North Shore Shore Conference following a 2-0 win over Homestead Sept. 24. Paul Cizewski scored at the 42nd and 79th minutes for Germantown. Ryan Mongan assisted on the first goal while Ciarin Cummins assisted on the second goal. Hamilton dropped Brookfield East to second place in the Greater Metro Conference by holding the Spartans to a scoreless tie Sept. 24. With the tie, Milwaukee Marquette now leads the Greater Metro with a 5-0 overall record while East has a 4-0-1 record. Hamilton had a 1-2-1 record after the tie Menomonee Falls was third in the Greater Metro following a 1-0 loss to West Allis Hale Sept. 24. The loss dropped Menomonee Falls to 2-3 in the conference while having an 11-5 overall mark.

Event main fund raiser for Community League

The 31st annual A Community Affairan arts and crafts, collectibles and antiques show run by Menomonee Falls service organization Community Leaguewill be held Saturday, Oct. 19. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Menomonee Falls High School, W142 N8101 Merrimac Drive, in Menomonee Falls. The fairwhich will include over 100 juried exhibitors, an antique appraiser, cash and themed bucket raffles, a bake sale and a luncheonis the Community Leagues main fundraiser. In the past 30 years, from the craft fairs proceeds, the Community League has given over $800,000 for various civic and charitable causes, and the event gets better every year, organizers say. The A Community Affair team has put in countless hours and generated numerous ideas for celebrating the 31st year of our major fund raiser, stated chairpersons Jane Ford and Kay Weber in a press release. The community is invited to participate in our ongoing efforts to better the lives of those we help with our donations. For the special day, the high schools new gymnasium and remodeled cafeteriarenamed Market Square for the eventwill be charmingly transformed with flowers, drapes and a white picket fence. All exhibits will be all on one level for the shoppers convenience. (No strollers permitted.) As a highlight of the fair, Barbara Eash will be giving verbal appraisals, for $3 each, of all antiques except stamps and coins. Interested persons may bring in the actual items or a photograph between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. The many exhibits will include pottery; clothing; fiber art; Christmas ornaments; pet portraits; seasonal items; doll clothing; jewelry; garden art; and purses. Also, free massages from Rivercrest Chiropractic will be offered and shoppers can enjoy original piano music by Kerri Sherwood of Kenosha. The event will showcase exciting many new exhibitors, as well as the return of many favorites from all over the Midwest, said Jeanne M. Verbsky, Publicity Chair. Then there will be the food. Known for their cooking, Community League members will use their own recipes for this years cafe menu. Food items will include Swiss cream soup, hot beef sandwiches, chicken salad and homemade sweets. For a quick snack, hot dogs, popcorn, nachos supreme, tacos, cookies, fruit, muffins and bagels will be available at the snack bar. ThePastries N More bake sale area will have fresh-baked pies, cakes, quick breads, decorated cookies, bars, homemade jams and jellies and handmade candies and other treats. The raffle and silent auction areas are also a crowd favorite, said Verbsky. There are some really outstanding items, Verbsky noted. A chance at these baskets is a huge draw at the show. The prizes for this years raffle are $500, $250 and a $100 gas card. Tickets are $2 each, three for $5, or six for $10. Attendees can enjoy browsing and bidding on unique silent auction items in the Market Square area. This year the buckets/baskets are located in the silent auction area and they are based on various themes, such as All Things Disney with four one-day hopper passes for the Disney World theme parks; Casino Night with a gift card for a restaurant at Potawatomi Casino; Night Away featuring a one night stay at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee; a wine and cheese basket with Von Staehl wine and Widmer cheeses, and also Morning Star golf, sports and kids packages and a Christmas basket. Bidding will take place from the opening of the show until 3 p.m. Admission to the show is $4, with all the proceeds from the show benefiting local and Greater Metro charities, scholarships and civic projects. Donations for the local food pantry are appreciated. A free shuttle bus will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will be ample parking at the high school and stadium. ting to know them on a more personal basis, Jacobs said. She said the academy confirmed her initial plans of pursuing a career in nursing. Shiedmeyer said that during the three week academy she was exposed to careers she didnt know existed, such as respiratory therapy. I also learned that all the parts of the hospital work together to achieve one goal, which is to get the patient home and healthy, Shiedmeyer said. Shiedmeyer said her highlights were observing a cataract surgery and a robotic gall bladder removal. While in the emergency room rotation, Shiedmeyer was on blanket and coffee duty. Shiedmeyer also learned she had a healthy heart after having an EKG performed on her and tested her own blood type. Nadenla said she entered the program with an interest in pursuing a career in oncology. During the program, she said she learned of several professional roles in addition to the physicians. The highlight of my experience would probably be able to see the relationship and the physician or the health care professional, Nadenla said. She said each health care professional showed communication, dedication and compassion. The three departments she enjoyed during the rotations were nursing, heart and vascular and speech therapy. Crownover said she entered the program with an interest in emergency medicine and surgery. Throughout the process, I learned so much about the different parts of the hospital, Crownover said. She said her favorite departments were the Cancer Care Center, the heart-catheter lab, the emergency department and surgery services. During the rotation in the Cancer Care Center Crownover learned about new and upcoming treatments. She later learned about four heart-catheter procedures. She also toured the emergency department and is still interested in pursuing a career in that field. Her highlight was observing open heart surgery. My experience wouldnt have been as fulfilling as it was without the patience and kindness of my mentors that I worked with each day, she added.

Richfield resident wins division ATV motocross competition, brother third in another division
Richfield residents Austin and Evan Clemens are back at work and school this fall after a summer that saw both put in stellar performances on the Mountain Dew ATV Motocross National Championship tour. Austin, 19, won the title in the Open B Division, winning races in Unadilla, NY; Steel City, Penn., and Hurricane Mills, Tenn. Austin Clemens, a 2012 Hartford Union High School (HUHS) graduate, is a full-time student at Moraine Park Technical College and works at Neu's Building Supply in Menomonee Falls. Evan Clemens, 16, a senior at HUHS, placed third in the Open C Division, winning races in Georgia and Kentucky. He also placed sixth in the Production C class, winning a race in Muddy Creek, TN. Open B, Open C and Production C are three of several amateur classes on the national tour. During a recent interview, Austin said he has been racing on the ATV circuit for approximately five years after first seeing friends running in national events. His first race was in August 2008 "and I've loved it ever since." The Loretta Lynn's race was his third win of the season in what was the series final. Austin said he was excited at the final result. "It was a beautiful kind of experience. There was so much joy for what I had worked for this year," he said. As for the future, Austin said he plans to race "as long as my body will take it." For Evan Clemens, it was his third full season on the tour. Evan said that he and his brother started at the local level before going to the national level. According to Evan, he was essentially learning his first year on the tour in which he tried to pace himself with the other riders. A strong finish at a race in Ohio in 2012 showed he was getting better. That set the stage for this year, which included several top five finishes in addition to the three victories. Evan indicated that the appeal of the sport in partially due to the people who he meets at the track. "It's a lot of fun and the people at the tracks are really nice," he said. Austin Clemens' sponsors include Hetrick Racing, Janssen Motorsports and Fly Racing. Evan Clemens sponsors included Maxxis Tires, Elka Suspension and Hetrick Racing. Menomonee Falls Fire Department

An adjustment to the fire safety programming is just one of the changes underway at the Menomonee Falls Fire Department. While Menomonee Falls will not be holding the main Fire Safety Fair this fall as it has in past years, the villages fire stations scheduled an open housefeaturing various activitieson different Saturdays through September and into October. (The final open house will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 at Fire Station #1, N88 W16631 Appleton Ave.) Anna Ruzinski, director of protective services and Menomonee Falls Police Chief, explained that the department decided to pull back for this year on the major event in light of other ongoing changes within the department. Menomonee Falls is currently looking for a new fire chief after Jeffrey Hevey for a position in Texas this summer. In addition, the department undergoing a reorganization and is proceeding with the construction of two new stations over the next few years. Menomonee Falls is also in discussions with the village of Lannon regarding the consolidation of fire services. If current discussions continue, it is possible that both communities could come to an agreement with a form of consolidated operations starting in 2014. For the fire safety open houses this year, Ruzinski said each station has offered something slightly different while giving residents several opportunities to attend fire safety events during the month. By Nikki Ackerman Staff Writer With a theme of "Prevent Kitchen Fires, this years Fire Prevention Week will aim to educate the public on the most common origin of a house firethe kitchenand offer tips on how to keep cooking flare-ups from happening in the first place. This is one of the biggest causes of home fires, said John Delain, public education coordinator for the Germantown Fire Department. We respond to quite a few of thesestove fires, kitchen firesevery year. Along with emphasizing this years theme, local officials will be promoting the goal of increased general fire safety among the publica mission that has been a top National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) priority since 1922. Established to commemorate the Great Chicago Firewhich began Oct. 8, 1871 and continued into the next day when it did the majority of its damageFire Prevention Week is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls. Area residents will have an opportunity to learn fire safety lessons in a fun way as Fire Prevention Week events take place throughout the county at public safety departments and schools. One community favoritethe Germantown Fire Departments annual Fire Safety Fairwill take place Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Fire Station #2, N115 W18752 Edison Drive. The fair will include a variety of childrens and family activities, including a Sparky Bounce House, a display of fire trucks and the Survive Alive House, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. Most importantly, attendees will have access to fire safety information and get to participate in realistic kitchen fire situations. Through hands-on demonstrations, we will teach people things like how to extinguish a grease fire or use a cover to stop the fire from spreading, Delain explained, noting that the department will have a stove set up at the fair. The eventwhich typically draws around 1,000 area residentswill also feature a child identification station set up by the village police department and booths run by area health care professionals. There will be a lot of great educational tools available, said Delain. People will be able to see what their local firefighters do and how they do it, and just learn more about safety in general.

For anyone who has ever thought about becoming a paid-on-call firefighter, the Germantown Fire Department is offering that opportunity. The Fire Department is seeking paid-on-call staff. The staff respond to situations on an as-needed basis. They are paid when on a call or undergoing training. Paid-on-call staff are required to reside within six miles of one of the Germantown fire stations. Paid-on-call staff need to be in the community for specific hours. The department is seeking paid-on-call staff for both firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) positions. Sussex Fire Department
In the village of Sussex, fire prevention events are held in August in conjunction with the villages National Night Out event outside the village, with the Pauline Haass Public Library ice cream social held a short distance away. Sussex Fire Chief Colin Curtis noted the department conducts fire safety events in schools, businesses, churches and other community venues throughout the year. The department also provides station tours for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Moms Clubs, antique car groups, preschools and elementary schools.

In addition, the department has a presence at several annual community events. Besides National Night Out, Fire Department staff participate in the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Lions Daze parades along with the water fights that are held on the final day of Lions Daze. Fire Department staff can also be seen at block parties, the villages Movie in the Park events in the summer and the Make-a-Wish foundation fund raiser in early fall.
