Single-Coated

Technical Adhesive Constructions

Single-coated adhesive products consist of a exible face stock material that is coated on one side with a pressure sensitive adhesive which is used to bond the product to a substrate. The adhesive is typically protected by a release liner which is removed and discarded at the time of installation. On a single-coated adhesive product the face stock typically performs a unique function. A good Face Stock Adhesive example is the MACtac Black Grit safety Liner products.

Double-Coated
Double-coated adhesive products consist of a fairly thin, exible carrier membrane that is coated on both sides with a pressure sensitive adhesive. Double-coated adhesives are designed to bond two substrates either similar or dissimilar in nature together. Double-coated adhesive constructions are highly customizable to meet Adhesive Carrier end user requirements. The two adhesive Adhesive layers can be the same or different adhesives. Liner The proper selection will provide the correct gap lling and will ensure the optimum adhesive contact with each substrate. MACtac double-coated adhesive products are ideal for gasket bonding, insulation materials, bonding electronic components, attaching molding, extruded plastic parts and more.

Free Film
Free lm adhesive products consist of a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive on a release liner without a carrier membrane. The lack of a carrier allows the adhesive to be more extensible and conformable. Free lm adhesives are designed to bond two substrates either similar or dissimilar in nature together. MACtac free lm adhesive products are Adhesive ideal for mounting nameplates, second surface printed signs or labels, and other decorative Liner substrates.

Technical Carrier Membranes

A carrier membrane can be any relatively thin, flexible material such as paper, film or foam. The term carrier usually refers to material that has been coated on both sides with adhesive. A carriers primary function is to carry the adhesive but a carrier also provides reinforcing strength, gap filling and dimensional stability to the product.

Paper Carriers

Paper carrier membranes are composed of cellulose bers and differ from one another by weight, degree of chemical treatment, thickness and color. Based on the thickness they provide paper carriers are a sound economical choice.

Film Carriers

Film carrier membranes are composed of various forms of thin plastic such as polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyvinylchloride. The lms differ by thickness, chemical resistance, barrier properties, tensile strength, temperature resistance, and color. An added benet of a lm carrier is it is water resistant. Polyester (PET) Films: PET lm carriers are clear lms that offer high tensile strength and can be used with most adhesive technologies. PET lms also provide good barrier properties to most migratory chemicals. Polypropylene (PP) Films: PP lm carriers are available in oriented and non-oriented versions. Most manufactures use
clear PP lms but white and colored lms are also available. Both oriented and non-oriented lms are water resistant and neither provides sufcient barrier properties for migratory chemicals.

Polyethylene (PE) Films: Polyethylene (PE) Films: PE lms are available in oriented and non-oriented versions. Most
manufactures use clear PE lms but white and colored lms are also available. Both oriented and non-oriented lms are water resistant and neither provides sufcient barrier properties for migratory chemicals. PE lms are similar to PP lms but are more easily stretched and relatively inexpensive.

Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Films: PVC lms are available in hard (semi-rigid) and soft formulations. Hard PVC is less conformable and has a higher tensile strength so it is not right for all applications. However, it is also less plasticized and offers better adhesive compatibility. Soft PVC is more conformable but because of the plasticizers prevents the use of certain adhesives. PVC lms are available in clear, white, and colored versions.

Foam Carriers

Foam carrier membranes are composed of various forms of plastic such as polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, urethane, and neoprene. Foam carriers are designed to provide the necessary thickness to ll a gap between two surfaces that are bonded. Foams are conformable and permit surface contact between uneven or irregular surfaces and they also provide insulating and shock absorbing properties. Polyethylene (PE) Foam: PE foam is cross-linked, closed cell foam widely used by manufactures to produce doublecoated mounting foams and single-coated tapes for a variety of industrial applications. Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Foam: PVC foam is used by manufactures to produce single- and double-coated mounting tapes. PVC foams offer a combination of softness and strength and is a good t for certain applications. Urethane Foam: Urethane foams are available in ester and ether form. They are available in many thicknesses and densities and designed to work for specic applications. Neoprene Foam: Neoprene foams are used to produce double-coated mounting foams for special applications. These
foams are not used extensively but are available. Neoprene foams are strong and provide excellent chemical resistance.

Other Carriers
Scrim: Scrim woven materials consist of threads of material that are woven into a variety of patterns. The patterns that are
formed can be squares, rectangles, diamonds and other geometric shapes. The threads are typically spaced to form a wide open weave. Scrims primary purpose is to provide reinforcing strength to the adhesive.

Specialty Products
Densified Kraft Paper Liners

Technical Liner Categories

Densied kraft liners are semi-bleached papers that have been super calendered to produce a high-density sheet with relatively low porosity. Because of their low porosity, these papers can be coated with silicone release on either or both sides. They are commonly referred to as SCK, which stands for Super Calendered Kraft. 60# SCK: This liner is the workhorse in double-coated adhesive products. It has
a balanced combination of good economy and enough thickness to allow most kiss cutting, and good tensile strength for good web processing.

80# SCK: This liner is used when even more additional liner thickness is required. It
will provide easier die-cutting processes and easier removal during assembly since it is thicker and stiffer.

Polycoated Kraft Paper Liners

This family of liners combines the properties of paper and polyethylene to produce a dimensionally stable product that provides excellent thickness and easy release characteristics with an improved level of moisture stability. 72# PCK: This white polycoated liner is capable of being coated with release on both sides and, therefore, can be used in single-liner, self-wound tape constructions. It provides good moisture stability and is approximately 6.0 mils thick. 83# PCK: This is a brown, unbleached, polycoated paper. It can be release coated on both sides for use in self-wound tapes. However, it can also be coated on one side only, if required. It has a thickness of approximately 6.4 mils.. 90# PCK: This polycoated release liner is considered a premium product for use on sheeted products because of its dimensional stability, white color, layat characteristics and easy release properties. It can be coated with release on only one side, which precludes its use in self-wound constructions. Its moisture stability is apparent in processes that require subsequent drying, such as in the screen printing industry. It is approximately 6.9 mils thick. 12pt Board: Polycoated, unbleached (brown) 12pt kraft board liners are available
release coated on both sides for use in double-sided adhesive constructions. They are used primarily for their thickness and stiffness. In the gasketing industry, the thicker liner permits easier and faster steel rule die set-up. Once the gasket is cut, the stiffness of the liner allows the converter to provide several gaskets on a sheet that can be easily handled by the end user.

Specialty Products
Coated Kraft Liners

Technical Liner Categories

Coated Kraft liners are bleached papers with a clay coating on one side. The clay coating is necessary to produce a good hold out from the silicone release since these papers are more porous than the densied Kraft papers. 80# CCK: This liner is the predominant choice for most sheeted products. Its
thickness is approximately 4.8 mils. It can be kiss cut in the traditional manner and cut against as done in computer graphics.

60# CCK: This liner can be used when a more economical liner is required. Lighter
weight and lower thickness of 3.6 mil has good kiss cutting properties. This liner has high tensile strength for good web processing.

Film Liners

Film liners provide excellent moisture resistance and typically lend themselves to producing a super smooth adhesive. Polyester (PET): PET liners are very stable, providing high tensile and tear strength while maintaining total clarity. PET liners can be easily handled in both the coating and converting processes without shrinking or expanding. Polyester liners can be coated on both sides and are moisture resistant. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE): Low density lm has excellent extensibility
producing a very conformable liner. It has potential for stretching when exposed to stress of high temperature but is benecial when the bonded part with liner in place needs to be formed. It is supplied as clear or opaque and is moisture resistant.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE): High density lm is much stronger and less elastic than low density but is less conformable. Its higher density tolerates higher temperatures which permits processing through coater ovens without dramatically stretching the lm. HDPE lms are water resistant.

Release

A measure of the force per unit width required to break the bond between the PSA and the protective liner, this test incorporates rate of separation, angle of separation and width of the sample. With this test, it is important to consider the separation rate as speeds may not be consistent between testers. Rate of separation Angle of separation Width of sample MACtac Method: MACtac relies on the Scott Release Test. It specifies a separation rate of 32 ft./min., a 180 degree angle and a 2 wide sample. The force of separation is expressed as grams per 2 width. Common speeds include 32 ft./min., 12 in./min. and 300 in./min. Varying the speed will produce different results.

Other Test Methods

Additional testing methods are also used to measure: Tensile Strength Elongation Tear Strength Thickness Shrinkage Weatherometer QUV

GS Series

High-Strength Adhesive Tapes

The GS-Series of strip adhesives are made up of an unsupported SBR pressure sensitive adhesive, specially coated by MACtac using a patented, proprietary process, and wound on a 60# densied kraft release liner. The adhesive used in the GS-Series provides very aggressive tack and peel adhesion along with superior shear strength. This adhesive bonds to a wide variety of materials including low energy surfaces such as polyethylene and polypropylene. The standard thicknesses of 5 to 50 mils provides the mass needed to establish secure bonds to uneven or irregular surfaces. The GS-Series strip adhesives are available in a number of narrow width sizes ranging from 1/4 to 11 1/2. The tolerance for any given width is +/- 1/16. Typically provided as a single or double strip of adhesive on the 60# liner, each roll has ungummed edges for ease of handling and quick liner removal. There are manufacturing limitations, however, so please contact your district sales manager to review your application in order to determine suitability. The GS Series is also available with a 2 mil polyester liner as a custom construction. * Custom and made-to-order sizes are available, contact sales or customer service.

Phenolic Tapes
The MACtac IF4020 Series was developed for bonding friction materials with fewer environmental and safety issues than solvent-based adhesives, MACtac has developed a series of heat-activated, dry lm adhesive products. MACtacs dry lm nitrile-phenolic tapes provide permanent adhesion to a variety of wet-laid bers (paper), carbon and other friction materials utilized in automotive OEM, aerospace, heavy equipment, lawn and garden, and industrial applications. The new series addresses solvent-evaporation and adhesive quantity issues common with liquid adhesives. It also reduces waste and improves overall manufacturing efciency by allowing pre-measured tapes to be pre-applied in-line to raw materials or converted parts using modest heat-assist lamination (approx. 66C/150F). The final bond of the adhesive-coated friction material to its companion is completed at a higher temperature and pressure. This allows for greater speed-to-market when compared to parts manufactured with liquid adhesives, which can take up to a day to cure. The series demonstrates high strength properties at low and elevated temperatures and excellent chemical resistance. This combination is critical for friction applications where parts are subjected to high operating temperatures, energy absorption and pressures, as well as exposure to chemicals such as transmission and brake uids. Permanent adhesion where parts are exposed to chemicals such as transmission fluids. Ideal for high-temperature resistance applications High performance applications

IF4020A

Nitril Phenolic Filmed Adhesive

A 1.0 mil thick dry lm of thermosetting adhesive. It is protected by a 60# densied kraft liner, release coated on both sides. The adhesive can typically be transferred from the protective release liner to the bondable substrate with the use of modest heat (approx. 150 F). The selected cure schedule should then be performed to obtain the full bond to the end use substrate. When properly cured, IF-4020A exhibits good strength properties at both low and elevated temperatures. It also exhibits excellent plastic flow which contributes toward obtaining 100% contact with the substrates to be bonded. The material becomes thermoset after cure.
