infoDevs Advantage
Being part of the wider World Bank Group, our work extends around the
world, allowing us to leverage the ideas and lessons generated in one
country for the beneft of other countries. Our stakeholders in develop-
ing countries create and design practcal solutons with infoDev and work
with us as partners in ensuring
success on the ground. These stakeholders and our networks also
request reliable and rigorous research and partcipate in infoDevs
research and knowledge agenda. This research, which draws upon
grassroots voices, in turn informs efectve operatons. Further, infoDevs
analytcal products, such as toolkits, best practce guides, issue briefs and
studies, help natonal and subnatonal policymakers consider how
innovaton ecosystems and conducive regulatory environments assist
innovators and entrepreneurs to increase productvity and growth.
Over the past few years, infoDev has built on its success in incubatng
technology-enabled businesses to launch specialized programs aimed
at promotng the growth of new ventures in the mobile, climate and
agribusiness sectors. Supportng these strategic sectors contributes to
broader growth and compettveness, and leads to the development of
value-adding jobs suited to the new knowledge economy.
Our mobile, climate and agribusiness programs provide technology testng
facilites, formal or informal mentorship, training courses, and regular
mult-stakeholder networking opportunites, as well as traditonal business
incubaton services. In cases where the entrepreneurial ecosystem is in
the early stages of formaton and the demand for a physical incubator
does not yet exist, infoDev has invested in informal communites, or
hubs, that act as focal points for entrepreneurs. These hubs ofer regular
events, workshops, mentoring and compettons, promotng further
ecosystem development.

Increasing Opportunities for Early-Stage Entrepreneurs
In the search for entrepreneurs with innovative technology ideas that can address
a problem affecting their country or region, the Global Innovation through Science
and Technology (GIST) Initiative has implemented the GIS TTech-I Competition,
attracting close to 200 teams from the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South
East Asia. Among them was CardioDiagnostics, a Lebanese startup founded by
Ziad Sankari. Ziad lost his father at the age of 17 to a heart attack, which inspired
him to create a medical device that monitors cardiac patients outside the hospital
around the clock. This idea earned him a top prize of the competition awarded at
the Second Global Entrepreneurship Summit on December 3-5, 2011 in Istanbul,
Turkey. CardioDiagnostics has been given a strong start for a global success with
$20,000 in seed funding, hands-on training with serial entrepreneurs and business
mentors, global media exposure by MSNBC and Wired Magazine, an upcoming trip
to Silicon Valley and participation in the MIT Global Startup Workshop.
Transforming Technology
CRDF Global has trained more than 300 technology transfer managers and assisted
eight leading research universities with establishing technology transfer offices,
which significantly contributed to the establishment of the local innovation
ecosystem. The Programs include professional skills development seminars,
workshops, academia and industry international conferences, and site visits to
the United States for technology transfer professionals. Similar activities have
strengthened the technology commercialization capabilities of more than 20
research universities of the Russian Federation.
Accessing U.S. Markets
Since 2005, CRDF Global has implemented more than 20 U.S. travel programs for
close to 90 participants representing dozens of universities, research institutes
and technology companies from Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and collaborated
with such prominent U.S. organizations as MIT, Babson College, Garage Technology
Ventures, Plug & Play Incubator, CleanTech Open and others. Based on the scalable
and highly customizable format of the Innovation U.S. travel programs and
existing cache of experience, best practices and partners, CRDF Global designs and
implements programs that perfectly fit the objectives and needs of a diverse range
of partner organizations in emerging markets.
Building Institutional Capacity
Since 2005, CRDF Global has partnered with the Enterprise Incubator Foundation
(EIF), one of the most successful IT-focused technology business incubators and
consulting companies in the Caucasus region, to implement its Science and
Technology Entrepreneurship Program (STEP). With co-funding from the Ministry
of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, EIF implemented more than 15 STEP
activities including the Business Partnership Grant (BPG) program, Innovation
Forums, cluster seminars, business trainings for scientific community, legal and
accounting seminars and matchmaking events. Through its partnership with
CRDF Global, EIF strengthened communication channels between science and
private sectors, gained broader access to the U.S. business network and scaled
up its outreach and programs to non-IT sectorsbecoming one of the focal
entrepreneurship-support organizations in Armenia and in the region.
Providing Access to Capital
The ecoFridge, a revolutionary refrigeration system used to transport perishable
products, was developed by a team of Ukrainian scientists with a U.S. business
partner who participated in a CRDF Global research and development grant
competition. CRDF Global provided training and mentorship to the team to
prepare them to effectively pitch the ecoFridge at a venture forum in Los Angeles,
CA. As a result, the team obtained $2.2 million of follow-on capital investment to
develop their business, and EcoFridge is now being adopted by companies around
the world who appreciate its environmental benefits and cost efficiency.

Idram

In Armenia, to pay utlites, loans, taxes, or send or receive
money, citzens have to go to banks, post ofces, and municip-
ality ofces. These methods are tme consuming and difcult
for citzens who are not in Armenia to pay their taxes. Idram
Mobile Wallet allows users to make instant payments and money

20% of whom use the app regularly.
To internatonalize their product, Idram has a strategy to convert

giving foreign customers the opportunity to make transfers.
By building a strong network and integratng to internatonal

Manifesto
The Instant Newsmaker
Manifesto allows users to immediately shoot video or capture
audio with one tap and make it public with a click. Manifesto
provides both instant capture and content sharing, unlike other
apps that focus only on one or the other. During its free promo-
tonal period, the app was downloaded 30,000 tmes in 48 hours.
From its launch in Summer 2013, the app has received 15 paid
downloads per day from virtually zero, and has an average 5 star
ratng from many of its users. Because of UX and design, the app
could be easily scaled to other regions. Their internatonalizaton
strategy consists of localizing promo material and designing the
app for users in diferent languages.

In 2012 Trinidad & Tobago experienced fash fooding that caused
over US $15 million in damages in Diego Martn. In Hait, a 7.0
magnitude earthquake struck in 2010, resultng in at least US
$8 billion in damages and lef hundreds of thousands dead.
M.A.D.E. creates value for its users by efectvely delivering
actonable, locaton-specifc informaton about natural disasters
and emergencies, and connects those in need directly with frst
responders and disaster response coordinators, enabling them
to optmally allocate resources, something greatly lacking in the
Caribbean. Built from the ground up to run on multple servers and
coded in line with best practces, M.A.D.E. is designed for scalability.
M.A.D.E. will be launched in T&T as a pilot project, and subsequently
released in phases throughout the English-speaking Caribbean. The
app will then be localized for the Spanish, French, and Dutch-speaking
Caribbean. In order to build the core user base, targeted advertsing
to specifc disaster prone market segments such as tertary educaton
students, working professionals, daily commuters, farmers and local
government agencies is the frst priority.
The project director, Ade Inniss-King has ffeen years of experience
at Kronus Geological Services Limited, a geological consultancy

Centrica Energy, BG T&T, BHP Billiton, and Repsol YPF.

Deploying technology in India:
Proved the technology worked and customers liked it.
Then pilots in 6 countries.
Create something that people love,
then figure out what you do.
Sustain yourself
through customer acquisition
Pick a business model in line with where you are,
and what people are willing to pay for
To monetize well with advertising,
it needs to become one of the main
objectives of the company
Cornerstones that an investor thinks about:
Outsource when needed
Always try to recruit
This problem will only increase
Its a tough market,
hard to get distribution
Cloud
Opportunity to labor-force mobility
Apps to leverage under-utilized assets
cars not used, extra bedroom
It will become a new standard
Internationalization strategy:
Partnerships with local institutions with a real
need for mobile technology
Identify the drivers of the problem,
from the customers perspective
Viral marketing:
Figure out how your app can make the user look good
in front of their friends
Criteria as an investor when looking at ventures:
Whats the key problem youre solving?
Whats the solution youre providing?
Why is this really relevant right now?
Content marketing:
Content leading, marketing falling behind
Customer Acquisition
First think if its useful fo 1 or 2 people
Start with a Minimal Viable Product
and get 10-20 "ideal customers"
Then think about growth
Strategies: Localization, reinforcing the natural sharing mechanisms,
+ +
$ $
Balance between
growth and monetization
reach millions of users
Main model is advertising for
companies not selling
something physical,
and that can
Eric Ries (Lean Startup):
Build, measure, go out and talk to your customers
Team DNA, technology and assets, unit economics
Proxies of value (metrics): revenue, growth over time,
user acquisition strategy, install base
Tools: MixPanel, Localytics, Google Analytics,
Facebook internal analytics,
Localize your app (open-source translation),
Smart Link
giving them more info they want to consume,
paying for customer acquisition
Advertising, customization
(virtual goods, baseline service)
Demonstrate willingness to pay,
then route transactions through the app
If can't pay a team,
sell them the future
Buckets in a founding team:
technology, business
Ability to
attract talent
to you is important
$ $ Freemium models
(Skype, Facebook)
Looking for a comprehensive team:
technical expertise,
industry expertise,
design aesthetics
+ +
team, technology, market
Just start,
push your idea forward
as much as you can
The more you build your product and advance,
the higher your chance of having a team
Opportunity: How to handle
this explosion of new ideas?
How do you find out about new apps?
You were tagged by a friend on Facebook
Assumption: default is
Internet/mobile
entrepreneur
Think of mobile as a
new distribution strategy
Mobile, social, data, analytics will disrupt
every activity that you do in your home town.
Those are all opportunities.
There is always room for a fantastic idea,
but it has to be very disruptive
data, authentication, money, assets
Using the phone
as a delivery mechanism
Hyperconnectivity
5 billion
smart phone users in 5-7 years:
opportunities and noise
Mobile vs laptop
GPS, always on your body all the time
Mobile has a GPS
and the ability
to capture a
moment quickly.
Intersect your location,
press a button,
and services can
appear and satisfy you.
Task syndication:
while on the bus,
wiring a micro-payment
