INTRO TO THE COLD WAR Teacher Overview: Teachers should familiarize themselves with the final year of World War II, which included the development of the atom bomb. Teachers may also want to watch the Voicethread presentation prior to the lesson and be ready to discuss and explain the problems that developed between the United States and the Soviet Union, such as ideological, political, and military problems. Objectives: Students will analyze the early tension that developed between the United States and the Soviet Union at the end of World War II. Students will describe several reasons for the animosity between the Soviet Union and the United States at the end of the war. Content Standards: Sub-Strand 10.9.2: Analyze the causes of the Cold War, with the free world on one side and Soviet client states on the other, including competition for influence in such places as Egypt, the Congo, Vietnam, and Chile. Students should take a moment to remember the final years of World War II. It may help to give them some prompts and remind them of the outcome of the Potsdam Conference.

Think-pair-share activity: Analyze the conflicts that developed during the end of World War II that led to the escalation of the Cold War. What could have been done to prevent that tension from rising? Allow some groups to share their opinions with the class. Instruction: This presentation is an overview of some of the tense moments early in the Cold War (1950-1963) The teacher should set up a laptop computer and projector. Using the Voicethread link listed above, show the Voicethread presentation entitled, The Cold War, part 1. Students will complete a fill-in-theblank outline while they are viewing the Voicethread. They will discuss the time frame of those conflicts and the countries that were involved. Homework: Please pass out the project rubric and instruct students that their project grade will come straight from the rubric. Students will meet in their assigned groups on Google+ and discuss the format and organization of their Voicethread projects, which are due on Friday.
