It was early-morning Thursday, May 2nd when people started showing up outside the Valley County Courthouse for free Lilac, Choke Cherry, Caragana and Golden Currant trees. Over 7,000 trees have been distributed since Valley Countys first Free Tree Day.

Free Tree Day seeing new Growth

Valley County Free Tree Day takes on a whole new dimension as Two Rivers Economic Growth joins in the operation and promotion of the project. While the basic program will still promote the distribution of free trees county wide, the addition of Two Rivers ensures

increased opportunity for growth through grants and sponsorship. Donations for the program will now be processed through Two Rivers as they manage the business and accounting aspects. This will increase the efficacy of the program by allowing more time for the promotion and distribution

of trees through volunteers. Free Tree Day was implemented by Terry Archambeault and Dave Pippin to address the need for more trees and shrubs throughout Valley County. This promotes environmental benefits as well as inherent beauty to the area. continued on next page

The program has been successfully in operation for approximately eight years and funded entirely by local Valley County businesses. Since the inception of the Free Tree Day event, approximately 7,000 have been distributed. The possibility of expanding the project by providing a Valley County Community Orchard has been proposed. The orchard would grow all types of fruits and berries common to the area and be open for the public to harvest. A small parcel of ground on either Highway 24 North or Highway 2 would be the most beneficial site for this proposed project. The orchard would operate with the understanding that if it was not maintained it would revert back to the owner. Any offers, ideas, or support is appreciated. The addition of a community orchard would be a proactive project for our community and the coordination of local individuals and organizations would bring this project to life. Valley County residents would enjoy the benefits of a truly unique project as it is uncommon throughout the state. Please contact Michelle Tade at the Two Rivers office by phone at 406-263-GROW (4769) or email trg2@nemont.net, or Dave Pippin at 406-263-7171.

Churches of North America have set aside October as Pastor Appreciation Month. This is an opportunity for local congregations to give thanks to God for their pastors, and to demonstrate a genuine appreciation for their service to this community and the surrounding area. The New Testament honors vocational ministry as one of Gods highest callings. Pastors are Gods gifts to His people and are worthy of recognition for their willing faithful service. When the Apostle Paul remembered with joy the people in the church at Philippi, he spoke of their partnership in the gospel. Ministry is a partnership of ministers and lay people each helping the other to be effective in witness and work for Christ. The church cannot function effectively unless both do their part to build up each other. When churches honor their pastor, they strengthen the team God has put together to serve Him in their community. By showing appreciation, one can return some of the love, concern, and ministry the pastor has given to them.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month

Hunter numbers down in recent Region 6 game checks

Figures compiled from the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 6 game check station outside Havre for the weekends of Oct. 1213 and Oct. 19-20 show reduced hunter numbers overall, but increased harvest of some upland birds and waterfowl. Over the first two weekends of the season, harvest for most species has been down, said Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Havre-area Wildlife Biologist Scott Hemmer. Antelope numbers and licenses have remained low since the winter of 2010-11, and this fact is reflected in the check station harvest being down 92 percent from the long-term average. Most antelope hunters reported having to hunt harder to find animals, but most have reported good horn growth in the bucks they did find and harvest this year. Montanas special, two-day youth deer hunt was a week earlier this year, and that resulted

Hunter numbers
continued Elk harvest reported at the check station thus far may have been limited by the temporary closure of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, but Hemmer said not enough elk have been harvested yet for a meaningful comparison to past years harvest. So far, he said, pheasant harvest has been down slightly from last year, and hunters have reported pheasant hunting as spotty. Sharptailed grouse harvest is down from last year, but Hungarian partridge harvest is up. Duck harvest has remained strong again this year. Overall, however, hunter numbers continue to be low so far this year, Hemmer said. Total hunter numbers are down 6 percent from last year and are still well below those seen prior to the winter of 2010-11.

Bruce Nelson, state executive director for Montana USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), reminds producers of new deadlines for submitting annual report of acreage to local FSA county offices. Producers with apiculture, perennial forage, Pasture, Rangeland and Forage (PRF) including Native grass, fall wheat (Hard Red Winter Wheat - HRW) and all other fallseeded small grains must submit a 2014 acreage report for those crops by November 15, 2013. This is also the same date for these crops to be reported to your crop insurance agent when carrying federal crop insurance. Jan. 2, 2014: (or 30 days after placement of colonies) Honey covered under Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) Jan. 15, 2014: Cherries, Established Stand Alfalfa Seed, Fall Alfalfa Seed July 15, 2014: Spring Alfalfa Seed, Barley, Canola, Corn, Dry Beans, Dry Peas, Flax, Forage Seeding, Mustard, Spring Oats, Potatoes, Safflower, Sugar Beets, Sunflowers, Spring Wheat, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and all other crops Prior to crop year 2013, reports for these crops were not due to FSA until July. This change is part of an initiative at the national level to align acreage reporting dates between FSA and Risk Management Agency (RMA) and will eventually reduce the crop reporting burden on producers, Nelson said. At this time, however, producers are required to file an acreage report to both agencies. At some time in the future, producers will only be required to file one acreage report that will be utilized by both agencies. The current farm bill expired Sept. 30, 2013. Although FSA does not know at this time what the future farm bill program requirements will be, FSA highly encourages producers to report all acreage for a farm, including crops on non-cropland such as hayed or grazed grassland. It is also important to accurately report the crops intended use. Intended use is used to determine eligibility in many FSA programs and cannot be revised once certified. Producers should contact their local FSA county office if they are uncertain about reporting deadlines. In order to meet FSA program eligibility requirements, producers must submit timely acreage reports. Reports filed after the established deadlines must meet certain requirements to be accepted and producers will be charged late file fees for late-filed 2014 acreage reports. For more information on FSA crop reporting requirements, visit your local FSA office or visit online at www.fsa.usda.gov/mt.

in additional mule deer and white-tailed deer being harvested during this reporting period. In previous years, only archery deer hunting was open during this time of

the year, Hemmer said. But, he added, whitetailed deer numbers are still down overall this year in FWP Region 6. Thats due to a long recovery period from a

series of especially hard winters and significant outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic disease, also known as EHD, in 2011 and again this year. continued on next page
