1. Determined if patient has been incontinent, or if excess drainage is on linen. 2. Assessed restrictions affecting patients positioning and movement during bed making. 3. Performed hand hygiene and donned gloves, if needed. 4. Assembled equipment and clean linen on bedside table. Closed curtain or room door. 6. Adjusted bed to comfortable working height; lowered head of bed, and removed call light. 7. Loosened top linen at foot of bed. 8. Removed bedspread and blanket first. Folded each into a square for reuse; otherwise, disposed of in linen bag. 9. Covered patient with bath blanket and removed top sheet without exposing body parts. Discarded sheet into linen bag. 10. Assisted patient to side-lying position. Elevated side rail. Checked patency of medical devices. 11. Loosened bottom linen from head to foot of bed. Fan-folded soiled bottom linen and drawsheet and tucked them under patients shoulders, back, and buttocks. 12. Cleaned soiled mattress with appropriate disinfectant. Dried thoroughly. 13. Applied clean linen to exposed half of bed. Applied clean mattress pad (if used). 14. Pulled bottom sheet down smoothly and tucked tightly under mattress. Mitered corners. 15. Put drawsheet in place correctly (optional). 16. Placed waterproof pad on bed, as needed. 17. Assisted patient to roll slowly over linen. Raised side rail on working side and moved to other side of bed.

S 18. Lowered side rail and loosened edges of soiled linen from underneath mattress. Pulled soiled linen from bed. 19. Discarded linen correctly into linen bag. Cleaned mattress, if necessary. 20. Pulled clean linen over mattress from head to foot. 21. Assisted patient in rolling to supine on bottom linens. 22. Mitered top corner of bottom sheet. 23. Tucked all bottom linens under mattress. 24. Smoothed fan-folded drawsheet and tucked under mattress. 25. Placed top sheet over patient and unfolded from head to foot. Made horizontal pleat at foot. 26. Removed bath blanket and discarded it into linen bag. 27. Placed blanket correctly on bed. 28. Placed bedspread correctly on bed. 29. Made cuff out of top edge of sheet, blanket, and bedspread. 30. Tucked top sheet, blanket, and spread under mattress. 31. Made modified mitered corner with top sheet, blanket, and spread at bottom corner. 32. Raised side rail. Made other side of bed. 33. Applied clean pillowcase to pillow. Repositioned pillow under patients head. 34. Placed call light within patients reach and returned bed to comfortable position. Opened room curtains, and placed patients personal items within easy reach. Returned bed to a safe, comfortable height. 35. Discarded linen bag properly. Removed gloves and performed hand hygiene.
