Section B: Statistics [60 marks]

6 The events A and B are such that P(A) = 0.7, P(B) = 0.2 and P(A|B) = 0.5. Find the
probability that

(i) both A and B occur, [2]

(ii) at least one of A and B occurs, [2]

(iii) exactly one of A and B occurs. [2]

7 The probability of a day being hazy in Singapore is 0.05. Given that the weather
condition of any day in Singapore is independent of the other days, find the
probability that, out of 28 days,

(i) exactly 3 days will be hazy, [2]

(ii) at least 2 days will be hazy, [2]

(iii) exactly 3 days will be hazy given that at least 2 days will be hazy. [3]

There are 365 days in a year. Using a suitable approximation, estimate the
probability that in a randomly chosen year, less than 15 days will be hazy. State the
mean and variance of the distribution used in the approximation.

8 A florist cuts all her roses such that their lengths are normally distributed with
variance 2.25 cm
2
. The florist claims that the mean length of her roses is 20 cm. A
random sample of 50 roses was taken and found to have a mean length of 19.5 cm.
Test the florists claim at 3% level of significance.

[4]

The florist employs a new staff to cut the roses and the standard deviation remains
unchanged. The florist claims the mean length is now more than 20 cm. A new
random sample of 50 roses is taken. Find the set of values within which the mean
length of this sample must lie for the florists claim to be accepted at 5% level of
significance.

9 1000 students opt to read either H1 or H2 Mathematics in Singa Institute. The
numbers in each of the three faculties reading Mathematics are summarised in the
table below.

H1 Mathematics H2 Mathematics
Arts 300 50
Business 150 225
Science 0 275

An overseas education researcher carries out a survey by performing stratified
sampling to investigate the grades of the students, using a sample of 100 students.

(i) Identify the strata and find the size of the sample taken from each stratum. [2]

(ii) State, in the context of the question, one advantage that is unique to stratified
sampling.

[1]

(iii) Suggest an alternative sampling method to the researcher and state, in the
context of the question, one advantage that this alternative sampling method has
over stratified sampling.

10 Students are to select their enrichment programme out of three choices. The
probability of selecting Olympiad and Sudoku programme as their first choice is 0.3
and 0.55 respectively.

Given that a randomly chosen students first choice is Olympiad, the probability of
him selecting Sudoku as the second choice is 0.6. The probability of him selecting
Olympiad as the second choice is 0.2 if his first choice is Sudoku. It was noted that
students who selected Tic-Tac-Toe as their first choice never selected Sudoku in
any of their choices.

This information is shown in the tree diagram below.

(i) Complete the tree diagram. [2]

(ii) Find the probability a randomly chosen student chose Olympiad as one of his
choices. [2]

(iii) A student will only be assigned to attend the enrichment programme of either
his first or second choice. Given that a student attended the Sudoku enrichment
programme, find the probability that it was his first choice.

11 Puppies and kittens have masses, in kg, that are independent and are normally
distributed with means and standard deviations as shown in the following table.

Mean mass Standard deviation
Puppies 5.1 1.2
Kittens 4.5 0.8

(i) Find the probability that the mass of a puppy chosen at random is between 4.8
kg and 5.2 kg.

[2]

(ii) Find the probability that the total mass of 6 puppies is less than 30 kg, stating
clearly the mean and variance of the distribution that you use.

[4]

(iii) One puppy and two kittens are chosen at random. Find the probability that the
total mass of the two kittens is greater than twice the mass of the puppy, stating
clearly the mean and variance of the distribution that you use.

[4]

(iv) A paper carton, which is designed to withstand goods with masses not
exceeding m kg, is used to transport the animals.
Calculate the least value of m, to the nearest integer, such that it is at least 99%
certain that 5 kittens can be transported safely, giving your answer to the nearest
kilogram.

estimate the duration of sleep of another 50 weeks old infant.
