It can be constructed quickly and support armor class loads. It is mainly used as an assault bridge to forward armor toward the enemy. Its mission is usually to follow behind armor units during conflict for when needed. Construction of this bridge in a timely manner could ensure mission success. (The instructor can build on this motivator to motivate the students).

Extra precaution must be taken when constructing the bridge in inclement weather. Safety will be monitored and reinforced thoughout construction of the bridge.

NOTE: Instructor will, using the manual review with students panel point codes starting on page 4-2 for single story, moving on to page 4-3 for double story and link reinforced, moving on to launching nose codes and on page 4-4 review landing zone numbers. NOTE: Show O/H # 4 a. Direct assembly of the end of bridge. (double story) (pages 4-20 through 4-23) (1) Position a bank seat beam on the longitudinal girders close to the front roller beam. Place two endtaper panels on the longitudinal girders, pin jaws to the front and the rear of the endtaper panels resting on the rear roller beam. NOTE: Show O/H # 5 and # 6 (2) Place guide (panel) pins into the middle pin hole on both sides of the bankseat beam. Position and secure the bankseat beam to the endtaper panels with panel pins. Connect top panels (C) to the bankseat beam on each side with shootbolts and panel pins. Place panel pins between the endtaper panels and the rear of both top panels (C). This acts as a cushion to ease the installation of the junction panels. NOTE: Show O/H # 7 (3) Connect top panels (B) to top panels (C) with shootbolts and panel pins. Connect the junction panels (A) to the top panels (B) and endtapered panels with shootbolts and panel pins. Remove panel pin from between top panels and endtaper panels. NOTE: Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.

NOTE: Show O/H # 7 a. Direct assembly of the first bay of bridge. (double story) (pages 4-23 through 4-25) (1) Add bay 1 top panels to the junction panels and secure using headless pins. NOTE: A headless pin is used if there is any chance the bridge will be delaunched and dissassembled on the far bank. Add bay 1 bottom panel to the top panel and to the junction panel, secure with shootbolts and panel pins. Position students around the outside of the bridge, lift and carry the bridge forward until bay 1 is boomed to 1p2 over the rear roller beam. NOTE: The instructor states when the bridge is being boomed, the students DO NOT use carrying bars and that they stand clear of the roller beams, also explaining the boom points to the students. NOTE: Show O/H # 8 and # 9 (2) Adjust the height and level of the front and rear roller beams so the top panels are roughly parallel to the ground and at an acceptable working height. Connect sway brace from bankseat beam to center of endtapered panel. Add another sway brace from center of same endtapered panel to rear of other endtapered panel. NOTE: To prevent problems pinning the sway braces, always pin brace that is close to the gap first. Placement of sway braces must form a zig-zag pattern. Do not add sway braces in bay 1, they will be added when the launching nose have been assembled. NOTE: Show O/H # 10 and # 11 (3) Connect launching nose roller to the bankseat beam with a launching nose pin. (page 4-33) (4) Connect end post to both junction panels using headless pins. Place retainer clips on both ends of headless pins. Connect launching nose cross girder to end posts at the correct setting determined by the field design. (page 4-34 through 4-36) NOTE: C. Directed assembly of each bay and construct launching nose to complete gap closure for a 2E + 14 bay of bridge, using sequential steps in the building and boom of the bridge without injury to self, personnel, or damage to equipment and degradation of the environment.

NOTE: Show O/H # 12 a. Assemble bays two and three and add launching nose. (use building and boom table, page 7-2 and 7-3) (1) Connect top panels (2) to top panels (1) with shootbolts and panel pins. Add bottom panels to the top panels with shootbolts and panel pins. Connect top panels (3) to top panels (2) with shootbolts and panel pins. Add bottom panels to the top panels with shootbolts and panel pins. Do not add the sway braces. (2) Assemble the light front, light rear and one section of heavy launching nose Lift, carry and place launching nose on top of the launching nose cross girder pushing nose forward until junction of light launching nose front and light launching nose rear is next to the nose roller that is connected to the bankseat beam. (page 4-38 through 4-42). (3) Place one 20 ton jack with handle inside the first MKII landing roller pedestal. Lift, place and secure the LRP with a tie down strap so that the front edge of the LRP is at the junction of the light front and rear launching nose. NOTE: Improper placement of the LRP on the launching nose may result in injury or damage to equipment. (4) Add second bay of heavy launching nose. Push nose forward until the center vertical in the first heavy launching nose is at center of the launching nose cross girder. Secure with panel pin. (5) Add and boom one at a time, three more heavy launching nose sections to the last launching nose. Secure with panel pin. b. Assemble bays four, five, and rest of launching nose. (page 7-2 and 7-3) (1) Connect top panels (4) to top panels (3) with shootbolts and panel pins. Add bottom panels to the top panels with shootbolts and panel pins. Connect top panels (5) to top panels (4) with shootbolts and panel pins. Add bottom panels to the top panels with shootbolts and panel pins. NOTE: Do not add the sway braces at this time because you can not finish the launching nose.

(2) Add two more heavy nose sections to the launching nose and push launching nose to final position on the launching nose cross girder and secure the launching nose with a panel pin. NOTE: Ensure that the panel pin is placed through the launching nose roller and anchor tube in the center of the sixth heavy nose section and safety clipped to prevent movement. c. Assemble bay six and add one deck unit to bay one, position three. Add sway braces from bays one through six. Have students gather around the outside of the bridge and boom the bridge to 3p0. (sway braces, page 4-25) NOTE: Before booming bridge to 3p0, instructors must ensure rollers on the rocking roller are in the up position and stops are out. d. Assemble bays seven though nine and place one deck in bay seven at position three. Add sway braces to bays seven through nine. e. Assemble students at the rear of the bridge and explain the procedures for booming the bridge with a truck. (page 4-65 through 4-68). Have center of bridge crewconnect the push bar cross girder (PBCG) to the bottom panel on bay nine and connect push bar to truck and (PBCG). f. Have students stand clear and boom bridge to 4p7. Have center of bridge crew remove (PBCG). NOTE: Before booming bridge to 4p7, instructors must ensure rollers on the rocking roller are in the up position and stops are out. g. Assemble bays ten through twelve and add one deck to bay eleven position three. Add sway braces to bays ten through twelve. Connect push bar cross girder to bottom panels of bay twelve. Connect the push bar to the push bar cross girder (PBCG) and to the push bar adapter on the truck. Have students stand clear and boom bridge to 10p0 over the rear roller beam. (pages 7-2 and 7-3) NOTE: Before booming bridge to 10p0, instructors must ensure rollers on the rocking roller are in the up position and stops are out. h. Connect the anchor assembly (long) to the bottom panel pin on bay one. (page 4-52 through 4-55) NOTE: Before booming bridge to 11p0, instructors must ensure rollers on the rocking roller are in the up position and stops are out. i. Have students stand clear and boom bridge to 11p0 over rear roller beam. Connect the anchor assembly (short) to the bottom panel pin at panel point 2p0. Connect longreinforcing link to the anchor assembly, the long link is brought in behind the capsill roller beam and positioned under the roller beam and over the cross girder add packing. (pages 4-54 and 4-55). j. Disconnect push bar, PBCG and assemble bays thirteen and fourteen adding the sway braces. Add near shore end of bridge. k. Connect the push bar to the bankseat beam and the 5-ton truck. (1) Have students stand clear, have truck driver launch bridge to 6p4 at the

capsill roller beam until center of gravity. Have one instructor and center of bridge crew go to the far shore, place the MKII landing roller pedestal at LZ4. (page 4-4). (2) Connect the post tensioning assembly to the bottom panel in bay five. Lower the tensioning arm and connect one long link to each end. Connect light tackle to the long link at 4p7. Add footwalk assembly. (pages 4-56 through 4-62) (3) Have truck driver launch the bridge to 7p4. Then connect anti flutter at (6p7 two per side) add two long link at bay seven. (4) Have truck driver launch bridge to 9p4 and connect light tackle to long link at 8p7. NOTE: The students may ask a question, how do you know where to place the second post tensioning assembly. The answer is on page 4-56 in the NOTE: always five bays in from the near shore end of bridge no matter how many bays are added. (5) Have truck driver launch bridge to 11p6 and connect the second post tensioning assembly arm and connect long link at each end. Add footwalk assembly. (6) Have students gather around the rear roller beam, lift and set it out of the way of the truck. Place light tackle at 11p1 and connect to the long link. (7) Have truck driver launch bridge to 14p2. Gather students around the front roller beam, lift and set it out of the way of the truck. Connect the anchor assembly short to the bottom panel at bay 14. (8) Have the truck driver launch bridge to Dp2. Connect the long link of the anchor assembly. (9) Have students on near shore gather around the (EX front roller beam). This will be used to jack down the bridge to enable the capsill roller beam to be removed. The front roller beam will now be called EX FRB. Lift, carry and place in front of the capsill roller beam. Remove capsill roller beam under the end of bridge. (10) Have truck driver launch the bridge until required bearing is reached . NOTE: Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.

NOTE: Show O/H # 13 a. Jack down far shore end of bridge. (page 4-50) (1) Release pressure on the far-shore 20-ton jack in the landing roller pedestal, lowering the far-shore end of bridge to the ground. (2) Remove the landing roller pedestal on the far shore. Disassemble the launching nose, cross girder, end posts and remove launching nose roller. NOTE: Show O/H # 14 b. Jack down near shore end of bridge. (page 4-82) (1) Remove push bar from the truck. Place 4 deck units on end of near shore bridge. NOTE: Show O/H # 15, # 16 and # 17 (2) Have students construct the davits. (page 4-82 through 4-86) NOTE: The instructors must ensure the davits are on line with the jacking brackets. The davits are vertical and the cable pullers are in low gear before jacking. (3) Jack the bridge up off the EX front roller beam and pin safety chains to jacking brackets. Remove EX front roller beam from under the bridge and move it out of the way. Remove the pin in the safety chains and jack down the bridge. When the bridge is resting on the ground, disassemble the davits and move them out of the way. NOTE: Show O/H # 18 c. Have students place the ramps and roadway. (page 4-90 through 4-92 and page 1-88 figure 1-9) (1) Have students place ramps on the near shore end of bridge, and deck center of bridge. NOTE: Show O/H # 19 (2) Have students place ramps on the far shore end of bridge. Lower the links on both sides of the bridge. Place curbs on bridge. NOTE: Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.

ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVE - 4 Action: Conditions: Standard: Disassemble medium girder bridge with link reinforcement set In a classroom or at a fixed bridge training site, given TM 5-5420-21210-1, TM 5-5420-212-10-2, bridge completed and setting on the ground. Directed disassembly of the bridge, using the sequential steps in the delaunch table without injury to self, personnel, or damage to equipment and degradation of the environment.

NOTE: Show O/H # 20, USE THE DELAUNCH TABLE ON PAGE 7-6 a. Have students remove curbs from bridge. Assign 2 students per light tackle and raise links back to the high position. b. Have students remove far shore ramps from bridge and place on ramp pallet. Have students remove deck units from bridge by lining the students up on the bridge side by side until all students are peered up with each other, then at the same time have the students pick up the deck units and move them to the deck pallet. NOTE: Ensure students leave one deck unit in bays 1, 7, 11, in the third position. Leave four deck units at the near shore end of bridge for the construction of the davits. c. Have students remove the near shore ramps and place them on the ramp pallet. d. Preparing bridge for delaunch. (1) Position davits at the end of the near shore end of bridge. NOTE: Make sure long push bars are hooked up to davits and push bar adapter on front of truck before jacking bridge. (2) Have the center of bridge crew go to the far shore and connect the launching nose end post and the launching nose cross girder to the junction panel. Connect launching nose roller to the bankseat beam and place the launching nose on the rollers. Place the landing roller pedestal under the heavy launching nose link at 12ft from the far shore A peg. (3) Have the near shore students jack up the near shore end of bridge with the davits to wear the safety chain can be pined. Have students position the EX front roller beam under the near shore bridge at 1.5ft in from the end of bridge. Have students lower the near shore end of bridge down on the EX front roller beam making sure the stops are in. (4) Remove davits from the near shore end of bridge. (5) Connect push bar to the near shore bankseat beam and to the push bar adapter on the front of the truck.

(6) Have the far shore crew jack up the far shore end of bridge until it comes off the ground. Have the truck pull bridge back until near shore junction panel is over the EX front roller beam. e. Repositioning site layout. (1) Position the capsill roller beam back under the near shore end of bridge 9ft from the near shore A peg. Jack up capsill roller beam until capsill roller beam touches the bottom of the endtaper panel. (2) Pull bridge back until EX front roller beam clears the bridge. Remove the EX front roller beam from under the near shore bridge. f. Delaunch the bridge. (1) Delaunch the bridge until Dp2 is positioned over the capsill roller beam. Remove the long link from the anchor assembly, then remove the long anchor assembly arm. (2) Delaunch the bridge until 14p2, remove the short anchor assembly arm from the bridge and place the anchor assembly on the pallet. (3) Delaunch the bridge to 11p6, remove the long link from the post tensioning assembly and place it on the pallet. (4) Reposition the front roller beam 30ft from the capsill roller beam, and the rear roller beam 15ft from the front roller beam (or use the cross girder building frames) for proper spacing. (5) Delaunch the bridge to (6p4) until you reach center of balance so that the landing roller pedestal can be recovered from the far shore. NOTE: Make sure the landing roller pedestal is strapped down to the light launching nose. (6) Remove long link from the post tensioning assembly, remove the post tensioning assembly from the bridge and place it on the pallet. (7) Boom the bridge back to 11p0. (this delaunch is using the rear roller beam). (8) Remove the anchor assembly arm short from the bridge. (9) Boom the bridge back to 10p0, then remove the long link from the anchor assembly, remove the anchor assembly from the bridge and place it on the pallet. NOTE: Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.

Learning Step/Activity 2 - Disassembling the bays of bridge. (TM 5-5420-212-10-1) Method of instruction : Conference Instructor to student ratio is : 1:16 Time of instruction : 0.4 Media used : Overhead Transparencies a. Disassembling bridge (1) Remove end of bridge and bays fourteen, thirteen, and place parts on pallet. (2) Boom the bridge back to 4p7, then remove bays twelve, eleven, ten, and place parts on pallet. (3) Boom the bridge back to 3p0, then remove bays nine, eight, seven, and place parts on pallet. (4) Boom the bridge back to 1p2, then remove bay six, remove the 7th, and 6th, heavy launching nose and place parts on pallet. (5) Remove bays five, four, and remove remainder of heavy and light launching nose to include launching nose cross girder, end post and nose roller from bankseat beam and place parts on pallet. (6) Remove bays three, two, and place parts on pallet. (7) Boom the bridge back to Bp2, remove bay one and end of bridge, place parts on pallet. Clean site and return all equipment back to the storage building. Police call the area making sure all equipment is picked up.

STUDENT EVALUATION Student will be evaluated on a written examination for the POI File number 12C30-C04 (Ref TSP 12C30-C06). Student must score 70% or higher to receive a GO. A 30 minute After Action Review will be conducted after the examination. Include this information also in the Student Evaluation Plan which documents course graduation requirements. The using school assigns course weight to the evaluation. Rapid, immediate feedback is essential to effective learning. Schedule and provide feedback on the evaluation and any information to help answer students questions about the test. Provide remedial training as needed. Medium Girder Bridge Erection Set / Medium Girder Bridge Set / Link Reinforcement Set / 100 Foot Tape Measuring / String, Nylon / Hammer, Sledge / Line Level / UShape Pickets, Short 32inch / Bridge Transporter. The class will participate in the assembly of the medium girder bridge for given bridge design. One student will be designated the bridge commander. He/she will designate squad leaders for each crew. The squad leaders will in turn organize their crew ensuring that the correct amount of personnel is in each group. Top panel crews, bottom panel crews and center crew. The bridge commander will direct each crew in the assembly of the bridge. The instructors will brief the safety procedures to all involved in the assembly. The students will be given all required equipment to accomplish this lesson. 1. Direct assembly of the end of bridge. (double story) 2. Direct assembly of the first bay of bridge. (double story) 3. Assemble bays two and three and add launching nose. 4. Assemble bays four, five, and add launching nose. 5. Assemble bay six and add one deck unit to bay one, position three.
