Mineral Identification Report

You can find information first. 1. State the problem (the objective in the form of a question). 2. Gather information. 3. Form a hypothesis. 4. Experiment! 5. Record and analyze data. 6. Form a conclusion. 7. Communicate results.

Do you think the steps below of the scientific method must be followed in order? No, because

Now that you are done researching and identifying your mineral fill-in the information for each step of the scientific method below. Then, number which step was first, second, etc. Objective: Use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral. Materials: -Mineral -Streak Plate -Websites -Hardness measuring 1. Mr. Finan gave me a mineral. 2. I looked at it and observed it 3. I searched for it on Google 4. I searched the links -Color -Luster -Smell -Text Book 5. I thought I found my mineral 6. I looked into the mineral more 7. I found that it was my mineral 8. I said what it was to the class

Procedure:

1. State the problem. (Hint: Just write the objective above in the form of a question.)
How do I use the steps of the scientific method to identify a mystery mineral.

2. Gather information. (Look it up and/or ask an expert) *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 3. Form a hypothesis. Write a statement that tells what mineral you think yours is (your two guesses). Sulfur Rolled sulfur 4. Start the experiment! (Follow the procedure.) 5. Record and analyze data. *see the attached Mineral Identification Data Sheet 6. Form a conclusion. This must be a paragraph that includes:
An answer to the problem (question 1). How your hypothesis compares with the actual results. (Was your hypothesis correct? If not, how close were you?) A description of your mineral and what helped you find the identification of your mineral the most.

In science class, I used the scientific method to find out a mystery mineral. First, to use the scientific method you follow the procedure by finding the problem, gathering information, guessing your mineral, comparing it to other data, and share your answer with someone else. Next, my hypothesis was that my mineral was sulfur; and that was correct. My mineral is yellow and smells bad. It is very light, small, and it feels like plastic. What helped me the most to find out my mineral was color because I searched yellow mineral on Google and I found sulfur. In addition, streak helped me find out what my mineral was when I looked for more information about sulfur. Other information like hardness, cleavage, and fracture helped as well. Cleavage and fracture is how smooth a mineral is; my mineral was all fracture, which means it has a rough surface. I named my mineral name Quinton J. Chucknofsky. In the end, finding out our minerals was fun. I enjoyed it a lot.

7. Communicate your results. Post this report and your Data Sheet where people can see it!
