Course Contents:
Introduction to GIS (Principles and Concepts)
Basics of GIS Introduction to ArcGIS software GIS Spatial data types Spatial Data Structures (Raster and Vector data structures, topology and spaghetti data models) Map Projections, Coordinates, Ellipsoids of Reference and Datum. Map scales and Resolutions Map Data Sources (Aerial Photographs, Remote Sensing and ground survey) Data Quality and metadata. Spatial and Attribute Data input (Tablet and on screen Digitization, Scanning, Tabular data entry and importing Non Spatial data from MS Excel and MS Access programs, spatial data collection and processing using hand held GPS)

Data Visualization

Spatial Data Analysis: Measurement and retrieval, Overlaying, Buffering, contiguity functions and connectivity functions. GIS and Maps: Topographic and thematic maps Map elements and Cosmetics (Cartographic symbols and their implementation in different GIS software packages) Digital Colour Separation Techniques Qualitative, Quantitative and time series data mapping techniques Map and Layouts Design (Printing scale, paper size, amount of information to be presented, adding map layout elements)

Mode of Teaching:
Lectures using Power Point Presentation, A series of hands on computer practical exercises using GIS Software and a number of class discussions. Course Participants are encouraged to come with their own data pertaining to their day-to-day activities for the case study. However, CICT has a spatial database having datasets from different parts of Tanzania. This data will be made available for use during the course.

Upon completion of this course, Participants should be able to: Describe the main concepts of GIS. Use ArcGIS software to perform GIS data Input, Management, Analysis, and visualization Perform GIS data input, management, analysis, and Visualisation with the state of the arc GIS package.
