The historic centre of Sibiu and its ensemble of squares.

This is a charming place where you can commence your exploration of this magical county. An extensive stock of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture is to be found here. The key buildings are the Altenberger Haus (the old City Hall) and the Brukenthal Palace. The position of these two structures offers a spectacular view for the tourists at the sunset. Alongside Piaa Mare (the Large Square) and Piaa Mic (the Small Qquare), Albert Huet Square, which houses the Evangelical Cathedral, together with Nicolae Blcescu commercial street and the Liars Bridge provide an atmosphere unique in Romania. The historic centre of Media. The main attraction is the medieval fortifications which are one of the best preserved in Romania. The tower of Buglers and St. Margaret Church are the symbols of the city both, finished during the 15th century. A nice and relaxing place for the pedestrians is King Ferdinand Square where one can taste the traditional Romanian cuisine. Pltini resort is situated at 1440 metres altitude, being the highest resort in Romania. During the cold season it is populated with thousands of tourist who enjoy the winter sports and during the summer it is a restfulness place where you can evade from the crowded city. The road from Sibiu to Pltini passes through Rinari, a traditional Transylvanian village where the Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran was born. Ocna Sibiului resort is a place which bears the name of Salzburg in the German language and it is known for the heliotermic lakes formed in relict salt mines. It is frequented, especially, by old people who enjoy spending around three weeks in these salt waters. They undertake these baths as a treatment for ill health. The fortified church of Biertan is an architectural masterpiece which is illustrative for the entire area which was colonized by the Transylvanian Saxons. From a total of almost 300 fortified churches in Transylvania, built between the 15th and 16th centuries, the church from Biertan preserved very well its previous aspect. The door of the
vestry, built in 1515, is unique and remarkable due to its blocking system.

The fortified church of Valea Viilor was erected in the early 14th century and the present-day Gothic church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Since 1999 it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Lists together with other 6 fortified churches from Transylvania, including the one from Biertan mentioned above. A breathtaking view of the entire valley and village is observable from one of the towers where access is permitted. Cra Monastery was founded in 1198 by monks from Igri abbey and was disbanded in 1494 due to political and religious reasons. It represents one of the central points in the history of the Fgra Country because in the Middle Ages had a great influence over the neighbouring regions. Although today the original building is just a ruin, a Lutheran Evangelical church controls the surrounding lands filled with legends. One of them states that a small river near the abbey never freezes.

Transfgran (Blea Waterfall). This road was built between 1970-1974, during the rule of Nicolae Ceauescu, in order to insure quick military access accross the mountains. Nowdays, it is one of the most extreme mountain destinations for drivers alongside Transalpina. Blea Waterfall has a spectualar 60 m fall and it can be spotted from a parking area as you prepare to exit Sibiu County towards the other side of Fgr Mountains. Mrginimea Sibiului is an area which comprises 18 localities, all of them having a unique cultural, historical, architectural and ethnological heritage. All the villages are situated on the valleys of the rivers which flow from Cindrel Mountains through Transylvania. The biggest locality is Slite, a city with gave no more than 6 academicians. Painting on glass is a tradition from Mrginimea Sibiului strongly linked to the Romanian Orthodox Church. The road which starts at Slite and passes through Jina is an old strategic route used firstly by the shepherds. Cindrel Natural Park is a protected area of almost 10.000 hectares. Nature lovers and those who seek adventurous journeys can test their abilities here by trying to reach Cindrel Peak (2244 m) and then descent on the other side, in the valley of the river Sebe.
