The Background

Language plays an important and significant role in communication and in the various fields of activities. In Malaysia, English has been adopted as our second language and is taught formally from primary school up to the secondary level. So, it cant be denied that it is vital to prove the English adequacy of students proficiency. Due to those conditions, learning a language correctly is very important because accurate usage of a language gives way for better speaking and writing. In order to that, fundamental grammar rules are a necessary condition in learning a language. Introduction of the basic grammar in the early stage of primary school is vital to build up a childs language in future. Children need proper grammar in their communication and writing. Without proper knowledge of grammar, the children will find many difficulties to build up correct sentences and to express their ideas. If they posses good grammar they will be confident in speaking and writing in English. As far as we concern, in our country there are students feel ashamed and afraid to speak English due to lack of proficiency and confidence. In learning English, most of the students find difficulties especially in applying grammar in their speaking and writing. It describes that the learners ability in learning fundamental grammar is still poor and they need to be taught more effectively as early as possible. If children dont learn to speak and write independently by the age of twelve they fall further and further behind in their class. Realising the importance of the English Language, the teachers are trying varieties of activities to increase the pupils English Language acquisition. To make the teaching and learning process of English become more effective especially for the children, songs are used during English lessons. Young learns aged six to eight should exposed more to grammar through songs.

Statement of Problem
After six years of learning English in primary schools, the young learners still make common mistakes and errors, especially when they try to arrange sentences. As results, they speak and write ungrammatically. From the statement above, it can be said that, they have not been built a good foundation in grammar during their early learning progress. The importance of teaching grammar for the young learners impetus for the researcher to further her research on this problem. After analysing what the writer discussed in the problems above, necessity steps are to be taken to study the problem.

The study is going to be guided by the following research questions: 1. What are the relationship between teaching grammar and songs activities for young learners? 2. How is the progress/reaction of pupils after the activities? 3. How effective is the teaching of grammar to young children aged 6 to 8 using song?

Objectives of the study


The general objective of this research is to get a complete description about the ability of the pupils aged between 6 to 8 in achieving their success or achievement in learning fundamental grammar.

The special objectives of this study are: The writer wants to describe and analyze whether children aged 6 to 8 are capable in learning basic fundamental grammar. The writer wants to describe and analyze whether songs are suitable in teaching fundamental grammar to children between 6 to 8.

Limitations of the Study


In this study, the writer only focuses on songs in teaching basic grammar to the young learners aged between 6 to 8 even though there are other resources to be used. Moreover basic grammar to be taught is limited to their level of competence. This study is also limited to inservice primary school children in a school. Therefore, the findings of the study are not intended to be generalized to other primary school children in general. In this investigation, exposure to songs occurred over a 4 periods of lessons per week, yet this may not have been sufficient time to observe a change in the pupils ability to acquire the language.

Methodology

Research method The descriptive method of research will be used for this study. The descriptive method of research is to gather information from pupils knowledge. The emphasis is on describing rather than on judging or interpreting. Therefore, quantitative data collection is centred.

Target Audience A total of 40 children aged between 6 to 8 are the targeted audience. Research Instrument The study will use questionnaire as the instrument of the research to gain data to see the significant result of pupils achievement in learning grammar through songs.

The techniques of data collection: Classroom Observation Interview Questionnaire

Data Analysis After the observations made and after gathering all the questionnaire from the children, a descriptive statistic will be use to describe level of achievement in the language.

Significance of the study


This study is significant for several reasons: First, it can be used to increase the childrens ability in learning English Language properly in a more effective way as they grow up. II. III. The children will be able to study basic grammar more easily in their young age. The finding of the study is expected to give valuable information to serve as a feedback which contributes to improve the pupils knowledge on grammar. IV. Giving a profitable description to any further researcher who wants to study the same case; so this study becomes a helpful information and useful reference for the next study.
