Im so excited about our new Wednesday night schedule! Wednesday nights are fast becoming a major gathering place for our folks in the middle of their busy week, and were seeing lots of new faces. In case youve missed it, heres whats going on: Our Childrens ministryits called Wiredis showing our children how better to follow Jesus. Our high school and middle school students celebrate a great worship service in their re-designed worship center with Encounter 431. Our midweek service now has two sessions at 4 and 6:15 pm, with supper in between. I bring the same message both times so you can choose which time best suits your schedule. Many of our Sunday School classes and other small groups meet across campus, praying, building friendships and hanging out together. Much of our music ministry rehearses during the evening. If youre looking for a vibrant and inspirational time in the middle of your week, LBC is the place to be. During the month of October, I will teach a special Apologetics series called Why Should I Believe? Each week, we will talk about the grounds for belief in core Christian convictions. Our faith isnt something out of thin air; we have a reason to believe. What a great occasion for you to bring a friend with you to one of the two services on Wednesday night, especially if that friend doesnt know the Lord! The four messages will be: Why Should I Believe in God? Why Should I Believe the Bible is True? Why Should I Believe that Jesus is the Only Way to Heaven? Why Should I Believe that All Religions Arent the Same? The final Wednesday night of October is our biggest childrens event of the year, Light Up the Night. There wont be any other activities on campus that night. Especially for our families, this event is a perfect occasion to come to a seasonal celebration, complete with Trunk or Treat, rides, music, face painting and all sorts of other events. Even more importantly, this is an easy way you can connect with your friends and neighbors and bring them to church with you. Finally, please keep in mind that this month well be acting on the proposed 2014 church budget. Our church leadership has been working through the last few months preparing this budget and you will receive the details in a special mailout in the next few days. This is a time of great celebration because of Gods continuing faithfulness in our church ministry, and we want all of you to share in the excitement our leadership feels as we look to the future. Your vision and generosity in giving makes our ministry possible, as we make disciples in Lexington and around the world.

A Quiet Place
Tuesday, Oct. 15
12 - 1 pm at Reflections 1937 Augusta Highway, Lexington This month, the LBC Praise & Worship choir will be singing this song that was written by Ralph Carmichael back in the 1960s. Ralph is now 86 years old and was one of the pioneers for changing the music of the church back in the Jesus Movement of the 70s. Ralph teamed up with Kurt Kaiser to give us Tell it Like It Is and Natural High, two of the very first youth musicals in the late 60s. He also wrote The Savior is Waiting, The New 23rd, I Looked For Love and many more compositions that helped shape our music in worship.
With the daily dose of disturbing news we see happening around us in this country and around the world, we have got to find that place of solitude every day in order to keep everything in proper perspective as a child of God and also to stay prepared for receiving marching orders from our Heavenly Father. Our Savior needed to do this how much more do we? Mark 1:35 says, And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, He went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. I love the way The Message (MSG) renders Matthew 6:6: Heres what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you wont be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense His grace.
Boldness
Encounter 431 is our midweek student service based on Acts 4:31. That verse talks about the power of coming together for worship and prayer and how the Holy Spirit leads in such meeting times. However, the verse doesn't end there. It concludes by saying that such encounters give believers boldness to go out and share the message of the gospel and live it out. I believe this midweek service is only the beginning of a time when our students will boldly take the message of Jesus to their schools and communities. Come be part of what God is doing at Encounter 431.
Dear Parents,
Lets be serious. Life is busy. Sometimes our marriages get put on the back burner. Too often, my husband, Christopher, and I find ourselves double dating with Mr. and Mrs. TV, Mr. and Mrs. FB, or Mr. and Mrs. No Minutes Free. Our lives are distracted. In preparation for our first child, Coleman, we are reading the book On Becoming Babywise by Gary Ezzo. We were surprised to see that the first chapter was completely dedicated to marriage. It describes the parallel between a healthy marriage and healthy children. The author writes, We believe that if you really love your children, you will give them the gift of love, security and a sense of belonging that can only be derived from an on-going demonstration of your love for each other as a husband and wife. This makes sense. We are better parents when we work to be better husbands and wives. Lex Kids is committed to partnering with families. There is no way we could do this without also committing to helping parents date. For this reason, we are relaunching The Great Date Challenge. The Great Date Challenge is an intentional time for parents, and we do the hard work for you! When you drop off your children in our care, you will be given a complete pre-planned date kit. You will also have four hours to have quality conversation, create memories and simply, have fun together. Dont miss out! Registration begins Oct. 13 and will be open until were at capacity.

We Believe
We Believe is a unique one-time class where parents and kids learn what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Through this class, kids will have a clear understanding of the gospel and parents will have tools to begin talking to their kids about faith. We Believe also serves as an introduction to baptism. For more information, please email Kristen King at KKing@LexingtonBaptist.org.
Moving Up!
We had an incredible time with our rising first graders and their families in September! Each child received an Adventure Bible and learned what it meant to treasure Gods Word. Families were able to share their favorite verses with each other and share personal stories of learning and trusting in scripture.

Service of Remembrance
A man who does not control his temper is like a city whose wall is broken down. Proverbs 25:28
Sunday, November 17
6 pm in the Worship Center
Spending time with family and friends during the holidays can be enjoyable yet stressful. Having to face the holidays with the memories of losing a family member can be dreadful. We invite anyone who has lost a loved one to join us for our Service of Remembrance on Sunday, November 17. The service will include special music and a message of hope as well as an opportunity to light a candle in memory of your loved one. Families are invited to bring a picture of your loved one to display in the Worship Center before and during the service. The service will conclude with light refreshments in the Reception Hall (next to the Worship Center). Our prayer is that this service will provide hope and comfort in the coming holiday season. Will you make plans now to join us for this special service? For more information, please call the Church Office at 359-4146.
When anger has become a habit in our lives, it balances out all the hurt and wrongs other people have inflicted on us in life. Our anger manifests in physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, tightness in the chest, or feeling hot; behavioral symptoms such as pacing, clenching fists, raising our voice or staring; emotional symptoms such as feelings of fear, hurt, jealousy and guilt; and cognitive symptoms such as hostile self-talk, images of aggression or revenge. These cues often happen before we are really aware of the anger we have in the situation. Inoculating this anger requires a personalized plan that works for you with a variety of tools. These tools take the focus off the event that has happened and shift the focus back to Christ. Some of the tools you may want to include in your toolbox are: Praying for peace (Philippians 4:6-7) Talking with a supportive friend (Proverbs 27:17) Taking a timeout (Psalms 46:10) Thinking about good things (Philippians 4:8) Your own toolbox will include many other tools that you have found or borrowed from others that work best in your life. As you understand your anger better and implement the tools that work for you to overcome your anger, you will be developing healthy habits for a lifetime. To contact Eric or the Lexington Baptist Church Counseling Center, please call 808-5222. The center is located at 224 East Main Street at the corner of Efird and East Main Streets next to the Worship Center.

Missions Matters
Over the years on the mission field, many of our fondest memories and most impactful work began from volunteer groups like Lexington Baptist Church. Heres a special story about a volunteer named Dave. Dave traveled to the south of North Africa to one of the most fundamental Muslim cities in the country. When Dave traveled back to the capital, he told me of a shop owner named Sami that he gave a Bible to that I needed to follow up with as soon as possible. Dave had never seen anybody under the conviction of the Holy Spirit before like Sami, not even in the States. I decided to make a visit down to the south of the country to look for this man. As I meandered through the shops of the Medina trying to find Sami, God reminded me how faithful Dave was to come all the way from the States to be in such a place to be used by God. As I turned the corner, my eyes met a young shop owner who was reading a small green Arabic New Testament. I knew this must be Sami. He looked at me intensely and tried to stand up, but he went straight down on his knees and began to cry in front of me. I was stunned and really did not know how to react. So many times in North Africa, the Word never seems to take hold. I began to cry as well. Sami held up this Bible to me and asked me if a guy from the States named Dave had sent me to him. Sami hugged me and said all he wanted to do was to have me explain what he had read. It was getting close to lunch so he invited me to his house, which is common in North Africa, even with strangers. As we were waiting for our lunch to be prepared, Sami jumped up from the table and went outside to his patio. He returned with a soiled brown bag that contained a Bible that was over 100 years old a gift to his family from a Jesuit priest from the island of Djerba. He had kept it hidden all these years. We started crying again as the Kingdom of God was with us. Sami told me that his wife had burned all his Christian material except this Bible. He also said that until he met Dave, he thought there were no real Christians in the whole world. He had been praying for 30 years for somebody to come to him to help him understand the Bible. Sami prayed to receive Christ as his Savior that afternoon. I cant remember a time when I felt the presence of the Lord any stronger than that day. As we returned to visit Sami, he told me that he and his family spoke the Berber language. Our family had been called to work with this particular people group only a few months before I met him. Sami began to help us interpret the Bible into the Berber language. I will forever be thankful that Dave decided to take a short-term mission trip overseas. Dave was used by God to help bring the Gospel to two unreached and unengaged Berber groups in North Africa. As you begin to think about a mission trip, remember that God will use your faithfulness and obedience to do a mighty work wherever you are called to go. If you will find a place for missions in your heart, God will be faithful to multiply it a million times over. ~ Chris Hix (Patti, Hanna Marie and Joshua)
The Hix family (Chris, Patty, Joshua & Hanna-Marie) served with the International Mission Board for 11 years in North Africa and are now members of Lexington Baptist Church.

Prepared
To Make A Difference
by Sommer Cagle This summer I had the privilege to be the Missions Ministry intern. God truly led me to this position. A year ago, I applied to the International Mission Board to work internationally this past summer. I had been assigned to an eight-week trip to Taiwan. I was so excited and thought this was Gods will being played out in my life. Little did I know. The rest of the team for this trip was not able to go and that along with other complications led to God closing the door to go. I was truly distraught. I didnt understand why God would deny me the ability to serve people and seemed to turn His back on my obedience to fulfill His great commission. However, He was there the whole time, like He always is. Pastor Mike heard about my failed plans and my heart for missions and put me in touch with Alyce Gilliam, Associate Pastor for Missions. She offered me the job of summer missions intern, and I worked with Alyce, Mr. Cal (Cal Yngve), and Ms. Sylvia (Sylvia Cartin) throughout a summer that was truly incredible. What I didnt realize is that my heart was not truly passionate about serving the Lord internationally; I simply wanted an adventure. This summer, Alyce taught me that international missions does not begin when your plane lands; it begins by preparing your heart while youre still at home. God showed me how to do just that by allowing me to go with Alyce to Oklahoma to look for opportunities for our church to serve the victims of the spring tornados. He allowed me to see how our pastoral staff works together on a daily basis on things that I as a church member had taken for granted. And although I had originally thought being radically obedient meant doing something radical like serving somewhere dangerous or foreign, I was taught that radical obedience often is just doing something that youre radically uncomfortable with. God sent me to Instanbul, Turkey, with a team from our church to serve as a childcare helper for the missionaries children currently on the field in the Middle East. He took something I thought sounded insignificant and changed my life. I now have relationships with brothers and sisters in Christ from all over the world who are seeking encouragement just as we are here at home. Our team leader, Mrs. Harriet Kinard, along with everyone else on the trip, reminded me that God could use anybody, anytime, any place. The key is doing it on HIS time. Not our own. Ill never be able to thank the entire church staff and the team I went with for all of the wisdom and love they poured into me this summer. I truly feel prepared to make a difference at North Greenville University, where I am beginning my freshmen year. But I also hope to continue to make disciples in Lexington and around the world. I want to encourage you as LBC members to go. Maybe not to other side of the world, but to your neighbors house or to the cubicle or classroom next to yours. Or get involved in one of the many mission opportunities LBC offers within Lexington itself. Above all else, the most important thing I learned this summer is that missions are Biblical and that being missional is intentional. Be intentional in building relationships with the lost around you. Be intentional about being a missionary where you are right now. Theres a reason God has you where you are. Believe in and find hope in that. Your Sister in Christ, Sommer Cagle 13
Missions
On Saturday, August 24, a group of men, women and kids met at 7 am behind the Family Life Center to prepare for the 9 am opening of the Oil Change Ministry Event. We were greeted by a line of cars belonging to single moms and widows, many of them returning customers. These women come to LBC three times a year to receive a safety inspection and oil change, free of charge. While they wait for their cars, they share refreshments and conversation in the Family Life Center with a group of LBC folks. While others are getting down and dirty (really dirty) servicing the cars, relationships are being built over a cup of coffee and a doughnut or two. In August, this interaction took place with the 46 drivers that came to LBC that morning, many needing more than an oil change. They may be dealing with life changes due to divorce, loss of a job, sickness or other changes that have impacted their lives. They may be seeking more than an oil change; they may need a life change that only Christ can give. For one mom at an earlier oil change event, it was her first step inside a church since the breakup of her family several months before. Long after the oil change finished, as tears flowed, she shared her anger and hurt. She admitted she missed her relationship with Christ. This encounter may be the start of rebuilding that relationship. Oil change is not the objective here life change is. ~ Cal Yngve
