PREFACE

It has been said that a mans home is his castle.

This means many things, but at its heart is
means a persons home is so much more than a
place to sleep. A home is more than a house. A
home is a sacred space to protect, where you
can return at the end of a difficult day and
spend long, luxurious weekends with your
family. The book is about 40 homes from around
the world that offer their inhabitants a beautiful
retreat from the stresses of the real world,
making them less like houses and more like
modern day castles.
It will introduce you not only to the vast array of
beautiful homes that cover the landscape of this
marvelous world, but will also show you how
master architects, dedicated to their crafts, are
able to create these impressive structures.
While each home has its own unique features
and each is decorated and furnished to match
the unique tastes of the homes inhabitants, they

are united by the fact that they are truly

imaginative and yes, truly beautiful homes.
The architects that created these homes
sometimes worked from blank slates and other
times managed to adapt and change existing
structures and footprints into something entirely
new. But their mastery does not stop at simply
creating unique buildings. Rather, they have
built impressive clientele because they are able
to see the building as well as how it interacts
with the surrounding area. These homes truly
complement their landscapes rather than
overwhelming them, and that can make all the
difference.
Whether it is a family home nestled in a cliff that
overlooks the ocean or a cozy retreat for a
couple crafted from parts both old and new,
these houses are guaranteed to surprise and
amaze you with their creativity and charm.

Minimalist sculpture and lush landscape
harmonize bringing a natural, modern work of
artful genius to life. Designed by New Yorkbased Hariri & Hariri Architects, the WiltonPoolhouse boasts a modern aesthetic standing
polar opposite to the existing houses
traditional architecture. Yet, there flows a
conversation between the two which is both
warm and friendly.
The pool houses exotic Brazilian Walnut
faade feels charmingly nautical-like as if it
were sitting on a sunny, tropical beach.
Serendipitously, the structure seems to float like
a vessel in the blue waters of the ample-sized
pool. Rich wood floors extend out from the

interior becoming a deck which hovers over the

pool providing ample space for lounge and
play.
Tucking itself sharply inward over an outdoor
seating and lounge area with fire pit, the
houses archway frames the natural beauty
beyond. Opposite, an inviting spa and shower
enclosed in a wall of mossy green mosaic tiles
give the place a touch of color and texture.
Sliding metal and glass panels enclose the
houses interior, which boasts a comfortable yet
minimalistic living area, full kitchen, bar and
bathroom, while keeping an openness between
indoors and out.

2.CASA V4 / STUDIO MK27

Sitting along the street in the space-challenged
town of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the Casa V4 makes
use of every inch of the city lot it resides on.
The modern house, designed by architect
Studio MK27, brings new life to the classic
courtyard through a clever L-shaped floor plan.
The house blends beautifully with the
surrounding garden neighborhood, almost
disappearing when viewed from the street.
With its sprawling ground-floor design, the
home retractable glass doors along its axis
which allow a feeling of unity between the front
garden, common living spaces and back patio.
While the main rooms of the house remain open
to the nature beyond, privacy for bedrooms

and baths are provided by a light wood

cladding.
The garden homes furnishings promote a
warmth and welcome feel with a collection of
mid-century modern furniture. Large area rugs
add texture and comfort to the harsh concrete
floors while the wood cladding warms the walls
between glass and concrete. Interior lights are
plentiful as are exterior garden spotlights that
bring a magical glow to the courtyard during
the nighttime hours. The Casa V4 seems as if it
were delicately inserted into its natural
surroundings.
