MODULE-31A
Influence lines for determinate and indeterminate structures

An influence line diagram is a graph which depicts the variation of a particular force response function (such as a support reaction or an internal force at a given section) for different positions of a unit concentrated load on the span of a structure. Uses: 1. To identify locations of moving loads (live load, vehicle loads) that would result in the maximum values of support reactions and internal resultants (bending moment, shear forces etc.) for design purposes. 2. To enable a quick calculation of these force response functions under any loading configuration. Muller-Breslaus principle: The influence line for any force response function in a structure is given by the deflected shape of the structure is given by the deflected shape of the structure resulting from a unit displacement corresponding to the force under consideration. Simply supported beams: 1. Support reactions 2. Shear force 3. Bending moment

The bending moment at a particular section in a simply supported beam, will be maximum when the load is placed such that the average load on the segment to the left of the section. i.e. the section should divide the load in the same ratio as it divides the span. Train of concentrated loads: The maximum bending moment at a particular section in a simply supported beam under a train of concentrated loads occurs when a particular load is located at the section, such that when this load crosses over the section, the average load on the segment to the left of the section minus the average load on the right segment changes signs. The maximum bending moment under any given concentrated load, which forms part of a train of loads moving across a simply supported beam, occurs when the mid-span point of the beam bisects the distance between the centre of gravity of the load and the given load. To calculate the force response we need to multiply the point load with corresponding ILD ordinate and multiply UDL with area under the ILD.
