Week 1: Focus on Journeys and Flat Stanley

Lesson: The Grandfathers Journey Objective: At the end of this lesson students will be able to understand the meaning of
a journey and that there are several modes of transportation when taking a journey. This lesson also reinforces the use of compare and contrast.

Content Standards:
Social Studies California State Content Standards: A childes place in time and space 1.2 Students compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of places and people and describe the physical and/or human characteristics of places. 1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the 7 continents, and 4 oceans. 2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three-dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location. 3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols. 4. Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. Writing: W1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state and opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Language: L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Print all upper- and lowercase letters b. Use common, proper, and possessive nouns c. Use singular and plural nouns with matching verbs in basic sentences f. Use frequently occurring adjectives g. Instructional Directions:
1. Students will watch the following video reading of The Grandfathers Journey. http://youtu.be/PEfhJstC43Y Have a class discussion about the story and make sure to define the following vocabulary words.

2. On the classroom map, show the students the Grandfathers journey from Japan to California. Help the students identify where our city is located on the map in relation to the location of the Grandfathers destination in California. 3. Next, show the class the following clip of another trip but to Grandpas house http://youtu.be/wKcrsv_t8Ko

4. Over the ELMO have the students help make a compare and contrast map using mindmeister.com. See attached link as an example: https://www.mindmeister.com/343093290 Make sure to use random selection when choosing students to give answers to fill in on the web map. 5.
