Dad
(written in Shanghai, September 29 2008; English version HK October 6, 2008)

A drawing I did when I was small,

A sketch with Dad and me;
Another one pictured Dad on a bike:
A drawing on paper already yellow with age,
Memories from days back in the 50s and 60s,
Days when we lived in Bulkeley Street.

When I was small Dad worked all day

With the exception of Sundays
When Dad would always be generous with his time;
While Mom was generous with her care:
Keeping us company,
Attending to our needs.

I had thought of Dad as a great swimmer,

Not knowing that he really could not swim.

74

I swam in a float making the best effort I could,

Making my way toward him
While Mom attended to our clothing and things.
Not till the sun set did we return home.

71

Honesty was Dads virtue.

His business ventures always followed this guiding principle.
The ups and downs of PPM dated back to Wei Ching Street;
Soon it was moved to a factory building in Fuk Wing Street,
While the final days of PPM
Were spent in Kwai Hing Industrial Building.

Both Dad and I grew with age,

But then the distance between us widened.
Seldom were words spoken beyond how are you,
Even though we did yumcha and dine with him.
The intergeneration gap and his aural and visual impairments
Rendered half a centurys love and care beyond speech.

75

Like a child was Dad in his old age.

He would recite aloud the Bright Bright Moon and Hua Mu Lan,
A familiar rhyme and a poem that dated from years forgotten.
He would throw a temper and could not wait for dinner.
But he was forever a man of good fortune,
With long ears, a good appetite, and always a good sleep:
He wore such a sweet look as he passed away.

Do Not
(Thoughts on Prime Minister Koizumi Visiting the Yasukuni
Shrine)
Descendents of the Dragon,
Do not take pride in the ancient inventions of China.
Nor be carried away by Chinas long traditions even if they were
finer.
Inventive or not really depends on yourself.
To be wealthy and worthy, accumulate your own wealth.
Sons and daughters of Japan,
Do not try to pretend away the sins of your forefathers.
Nor be burdened by what they had done unto others.
Whether or not you stand truly upright,
Depends entirely on what how you lead your life.
Ancient times or modern; here, there, and everywhere
Men who bring blessings live alongside those who bring ill.
Whats done is done do whatever you will.
Do not intoxicate yourself with past glory
Take command. Life shall not be tainted by past folly!
Do not pretend. Instead
Know that good and evil transcend ethnicity,
Wisdom or folly hinges on but a flash of the mind, fast as electricity.
Cruel acts remain a curse.
Your honoring it only makes things worse!
Let this be remembered:
Loving kindness alone consoles all.
That peace be with everyone who has falln!
(Written in Chinese on July 31, 2005 at Tachikawa, translated on
August 1, 2005 on the plane to Hong Kong.)
