First introduced by Frederick Winslow Taylor in his scientific management theory, the applied of science in management has been a revolution method to boost productivity and efficiency within an organization. The theory of scientific management has made a great impact on management practice and was the fundament for the management theory until the current day. n modern industry, the greater use of Frederic Taylor

theory still is the key for any organization to be effective and competitive, especially in the development economic like !iet "am. The aim of this essay is to clarify Frederick Taylor#s $scientific management% theory and its criticism as well as the importance of scientific management when applying in !ietnamese business.

The Understanding of theory

&n '('', Frederic Taylor public his book, Principles of Scientific Management, in which he described his techni)ues that were took over to improve the efficiency of employees at *ethlehem +teel , -uta.a , /0'12. &n this, he suggested that by enhancing and cutting down the task, the level of productivity would growth. 3e also came up with the concept that employees

and managers needed to assist each other. This idea was very strange compared to the working techni)ues that were originally done in businesses before.

*y the time working in the steel industry, Taylor has notice that the ma.ority of worker intentionally perform below their capacity. 3e referred to this kind of behavior as soldiering and attributed soldiering for three cause4 the common workers belief that if they become more effective, the less workers would be need and they could be set aside, non5incentive salary system to motivated productivities if the employee receive same wage disregarding how much they produce, worker waste their time by depending on the rule5of5thumb method rather than the efficiency method decided by the scientific study of the task , Taylor '(672.

Taylor believed that money can motivate worker to perform better, so he has come with the idea of 8a fair day's pay for a fair day's work.8 +pecifically, if an employee didn't reach the goals in a day, he will be paid lesser than another worker who was working hard. 3e also came up with the scientific method to determine the best way to do any task. 3e discovered that by measuring length of various processes of a .ob, he could find the 8optimal8 method to perform that .ob. From these 8time and motion8 studies, Taylor to assume that some people could be more efficiency than others ,9indtool n.d2. Therefore, one of the important parts of workplace efficiency is choosing the right people for the .obs.

From his experiments in the work place, Taylor introduced four principles of scientific management. This was also known as $Taylorism%.

&n the workplace, the manager or the employers should apply the working methods that have a foundation of scientific study of the tasks.

The management board should scientifically choose and train their own employees and should not let them all their own.

:ll employees should be train and the employees# performance should be audited to make sure the adopted scientific method will perform properly.

9anagers and workers should divide the workload for two things. First, the established scientific methods and process of production can be implemented. +econd, the employees can do the .ob following the established procedures.

&n the scientific management, Taylor had introduced optimization methods of production and the removal of the wastage and unproductive on the production process. Therefore, the organization can maximize their performance )uality as well as the level of production. Taylor#s theory is also influential in building a good cooperation between the bosses and the employee hence encouraging a good connection between them. This new kind of management is

beneficial for the employee that the purpose of scientific management not only provide the way to better productivity but also applying the reasonable wage and incentive system for the employee. 3igher salary and several of incentive plans can help to improve the workers living standards as well as the working environment.

n the other hand, although scientific management is perfectly sound in theory, it is also received some criticism. First of all, Taylor used the functional foremanship on management, which means each worker was under command of eight bosses. This application contrasts with the principle of unity of command, where workers only received order only from one manager. The lack of unity of command can result in confusion and misleading in the organization. Taylor#s approach on the human recourse was also received criticisms, as he focuses too much on importance to efficiency but did not consider the human element on each worker. Taylor considers employee as non5emotional workers, which could be used to )uicken the work. 3e also assumed that worker can only be motivated by money and used that at an incentive. Though, in reality employee are not only be encouraged by monetary gains but also by social needs and personal egos. 9oreover, Taylor method can only be applied on an organization if the performance of the .obs can be measureable. &ts cannot be used in the service sector, when there is no )uantitative method to measure the performance .Finally, scientific management applied to much on individual performance but missed out the effectiveness of team work, which is very essential for the success of organization in today economy.
