Course Objective: Introduction to basic techniques in continuous communication systems. Prerequisites: EE 110 B. Course Outline: (main topics are printed in bold letters)

Introduction and Review: Transmission media (sect. 9.3). Communication system (Sect. 1). Modulation (Sect. 1). Fourier transform and series. (2.4, 2.8-2.10, 3.1-3.3). Performance analysis: Energy spectral density. Bandwidth (3.7). Power spectral density and autocorrelation (3.8). Amplitude modulation: Suppressed carrier (DSB), Large carrier (AM). Frequency division multiplexing. (Sect. 4.14.4, 4.7) Angle modulation: Frequency and phase modulation. Bandwidth of narrowband and wideband modulation. (5.15.2). Generation and demodulation of FM waves (5.3, 5.4).

Homework. 6 homework assignments. Most of the problems are from the Textbook, 2nd Edition; 1995, or 3rd Edition, 1998, or from the Reference Book 1 (Haykin). Lab Contents. 4 Labs: Introduction to MatLab and Simulink, Amplitude modulation (2 labs), Frequency modulation. One typed lab report per a team of 2-3 students to be graded by the TA. Exams: Open book. One 1h 20 min. Midterm (tentatively 11/5/2013) and 3 hour Final Exam, 12/7/2013, 8 am-11 am Grading : Homework: 12% Lab: 15% Class work 3% Mid-term: 25% Final: 45%.

Low pass and band pass filtering of various frequency components of a signal. Design of modulators/demodulators for AM and DSB-SC signals in software and hardware. Design modulators and demodulators for phase-modulated and frequency-modulated signals. Calculate and analyze the essential bandwidth of FM-modulated signals. History of FM development. Learn and use MATLAB for communication systems.
