LETS READ AND COMPREHEND PROGRAM SEKOLAH RENDAH PUNI, TEMBURONG

INTRODUCTION It is childrens nature that they like to read. Even though reading is not their favorite hobby they would not mind spending time to just flip over the pages and get even just a tiny bit of information from what they read. It is just like reading and children cannot be separated. The same thing happens here every time they have no lesson, during break and when they have the chance to go to the library, each of them would grab a book and read and sometimes discuss what they have read. The liking does not guarantee a good reading habit and good reading technique. Some may even do not understand the stories written in the languages other than their mother tongue. But they seem to enjoy the time they spend with books. So the school is designing a programme in which the children will be encouraged to understand and comprehend the texts that they are reading. Some popular reasons why reading English books is still considered as not so good are: Children find English Language is difficult Difficulties leads to poor understanding The language has many difficult words The words are difficult to be said Poor understanding hinders the children from enjoying reading English Language books The teachers also do not understand the full meaning of text Role model is less shown by teachers

This program focuses on the pupils being able to comprehend what words they have read and being able to use the words in other different sentences. English language teachers are the persons who will be conducting the program. The target participants are both lower and upper primary pupils.

AIM Children are hoped to be able to read English books and like reading them Children are hoped to be able to recognise the words that they read that will be seen throughout other texts that they read. Once children recognise words they will easily read them without spelling or using phonics Children are hoped to be able to use words in different sentences than the text that they have read Children gradually learn the good technique of reading English Language books Good Comprehension is hoped to help children work on their understanding on how the language works Good Comprehension is hoped to help improve pupils mastery of English Language suitable to their level Teachers, especially English Language teachers will indirectly learn to improve their comprehension before they share and teach the subject to the children The school houses a community who are into reading and are positive towards the improvement of the school achievement

OBJECTIVE Pupils reading ability improves at least 50% of the standard level towards the end of this year Pupils find reading English Language books is not so difficult After several exposures to books with variety of difficult words pupils recognize those words and know their meanings Pupils master simple and easy sentences, which will help them feel confident in speaking the language Pupils share between themselves about good reading and help each other out
