Step Ten: Practice the Speech


A. The Four Modes of Delivery 1. Extemporaneous mode: delivering a presentation from an outline or from brief notes. Sounds spontaneous no matter how many times speech has been rehearsed. This is the type of speech you will be delivering! . Memorized mode: committing a presentation to memory. !f limited use to most people. "ou #$%% &!T be delivering this type of speech. '. Manuscript mode: writing out the complete presentation in advance and using that manuscript to deliver the speech. (sed when the e)act wording is important such as a statement to the press. *. Impromptu mode: giving a presentation without advance preparation. Actually very common. $f you have ever had to introduce yourself to a group+ you have given this type of speech.

"ou are allowed a ma)imum of 122 words on the note card. *. 3ards that do not conform to these guidelines will not be permitted.

3. Sure-Fire Method of Practice. This wor1s! Try it! 1. Set up a practice environment. a. This should be a room where you have some privacy. "ou need to stand up when you practice 14 Do not lie on your bed or sit at your des1. 4 Do not practice in your car+ especially if you are driving!!!!!!!! "ou could 1ill someone else or yourself. Focus on the road! b. "ou will need to time yourself. The stopwatch feature of your cell phone wor1s great. c. $f you will be using 5isual Aids+ set them up too. d. Do not invite others to watch you until you have practiced a few times. . Study Typed !utline for structure. a. D! &!T M-M!/$6-. This is an e)temporaneous speech! b. Study the structure and order of your outline+ but D! &!T M-M!/$6-. '. 7ide the outline so that it is unavailable to you. a. /eally hide it! $t should not be within easy reach while you practice. b. 7ide your note card as well. .racticing without any memory crutches will teach you to trust yourself. "ou can do this! *. Deliver Speech. a. Start with the techni8ue to gain attention and do not stop until you deliver the bang.

1. Facial expression uses eyes+ eyebrows+ forehead+ and mouth to communicate. Facial e)pression should be consistent with your intent and message. . Eye contact is the way a presenter observes the audience while spea1ing. -ye contact varies with gender+ personality+ and culture. '. Gestures are visible body actions which should differ depending on si:e of audience and formality of the occasion. #ith practice

you will learn which arm+ head+ and hand movements are natural for you. *. Movement is what you do with your entire body during a presentation. Movement must occur with purpose.

1. Fluency is the smoothness of delivery+ the flow of the words and the absence of vocali:ed pauses. a. Vocal Variety is when a spea1er ma1es changes in rate+ pitch+ volume. $t gives your voice e)pressiveness! D. "rticulation is the physical production of speech sounds E. Pronunciation deals with saying the word correctly. $t is the accepted standard of sound and rhythm for words in a given language.
