The novel of speak written by Laurie Halse relates the history of a girl who is about to enter to high school.

In the party from the last summer, just about entering to the high school, her world falls apart due to the fact that in that party she gets raped by a guy. In an act of desperation she calls to the police. When the police arrive the party ended but, however, she could not told to the officers what just happened and from that moment, she has to carry with the fact that she has been raped. Even though not all the teenager had passed this experience, it Is not only about the experience per se, it is about the fact of speaking, about transmitting your problems so other can help you instead of carrying with them alone. The speaking as a way of relief. As the novel goes on, the problem can be clearly stated, the lack speaking understood as expressing her emotions, situation to others. This problem start when he begin the high school and separates of her group of usual friends because of the incident at the party., now she does not speak to anyone because no one its truly themselves. They are teenagers, teenagers who does not want to be alone either so they segregate to whomever who is different and try to imitate to belong to a clique. With nobody being himself, she find her way to express by means of painting. This is why how it can be visualized her painting, somehow sad, lonely, because that was the way she felt. When she started painting, the pain was a little bit relieved. She even created a room in which she could run away and be alone with this art, with his feelings, but being with them will not help her problem. The distance with her parents did not help at all, it only made things worse because she felt all by herself in house as well as in the school, with the exception of his professor of Art, Mr. Freeman. This teacher is the only one who in some way understood the situation of Melinda and support her in what he can. In the other hand it can be found her professor of social studies, Mr. Neck a racist old fashioned teacher who stress Melinda and in some way, it helps her to overcome his afraid of expressing herself, of defending her ideals. This is the aid of her friend David who, unlike her, already had the ability of shouting out loud her ideas, he gives him courage to speak and the strength to overcome her situation. But the climax of the story comes in the fourth period, when she speak to her friend and decides to tell her that he was raped I didnt call the cops the break up the party. I called them because some guy raped me. She knew this was hard but it was the better for them. Then she encourage even more and says that the guys who raped her was the boyfriend of Racheal Rachel: WHO DID IT!? Melinda: Any Evans When she does this, she is rejected by her friend and accused from liar but later on, Racheal found out that it was true, as well as Adan Becomes aware that she told to somebody about the rape. Then the most important part arrives, the confrontation of Melinda with Adan. When this happens, Melinda is now different from the girl at the party. Now she confronts Adan and when she has the opportunity goes for help and speaks, speaks with a group of girls who protect her. She is no more no speaking, because now she knows the importance of speaking. Knowing that, now when she is with her mother, she tell her about the rape and about everything that she is passing through, felling finally a relief to herself.
