Outline of lesson:

This lesson will follow a unit on nutrition so that students already have an idea of what foods are good for you.

Prior to the beginning of class, the teacher will set up the room by placing large sheets of chart paper that have photos of many different food items and their prices all around the room, turning the room into a makeshift grocery store of sorts. Each chart paper will represent a different aisle/section of the store When students come in, they will each be given a 'My Healthy Choices Budget' worksheet The teacher will go through the activity with the students so that the activity and all expectations are clear "As you see, I have a grocery store set up around the room on these large pieces of paper. Soon I will give all of you a budget to work with, and you will have to go around the room and try to buy groceries that will make healthy meal choices while working in your budget. Whenever you buy any food item, you must record it on your worksheet and then find how much money you have left over so that you can continue shopping. Please show all of your work on your worksheet as well." Place a blank copy of the budget worksheet on the Elmo so you can work through one option with students and modelthe activity "To show you how to fill out the worksheet, we will pretend my budget is $50. Therefore, I will write $50 here at the top where it says 'starting amount'. Now, I will look at one of the food aisles here, and I see skim milk. I think that skim milk is a healthy choice that I would like to buy, so I will record it like this on my sheet. In the first column, I willwrite "skim Milk", the second column is for the price so I will look on the paper and it says that it costs $3.25 so I willwrite that amount in the second column of the same row. Then, the last column asks for how much money you have feft to spend. How would I find this amount?" Take a student answer, "Yes, we will have to subtract the cost from our budget amount to find this total. lf we subtract $3.25 from $50 how much do we have left over?" Wait for students to do the wo*, "Yes, we will have $46.2b reft to spend, so we willwrite that here. Now when we buy our next item, we will have to subtract the cost from this new amount. Are there any questions?" When all students are clear on the expectations, Tell students that they will draw a popsicle stick to choose their budget and go around the room with 5 popsicle sticks so students can choose one, look at it, and you can move on to the next person while they write it down. The amounts on the sticks will be $45, $50, $60, $70, and $75. Once all students have chosen a budget and recorded it on their sheet, let them wander around the room making their purchases.

. o

The teacher will walk around observing student work and helping when necessary. When all students have made their purchases, have them get together with the other students that had the same budget and compare grocery lists to talk about what choices they made and why. This also provides an excellent opportunity to have students check each other's work if you so choose. Have each group choose one list they believe is both the healthiest and the thriftiest to share with the class Each group can present these at the end of class if there is enough time
