Travel ba with me to the year 2010. A young, brash teenager gets a netbook, and doesnt want to use Windows 7 Starter edition on it (there might have been a Dad saying I wont help you when you have issues somewhere in there). So he downloads Ubuntu 10.04 LTS netbook remix, and is immediately lost in the sea of all the forums, noise and Geing started with Ubuntu! blog posts. is is an aempt to prevent that from happening to another person. Yeah, there are projects like the Ubuntu Manual - but the goal of this isnt to make e Ubuntu Manual, but rather to create a short and sweet booklet about geing started with Ubuntu.
Contributing.
So, do you want to contribute? Heres how it works: File a bug report with a cool apter idea. Keep in mind the following: is is for beginners. Once Ive given you the go-ahead for the apter on the bug report, then go ahead and write it. Once its wrien, feel free to submit a pull request in git. Make sure of the following: at the apter is wrien in proper markdown. at the apter is added to the TableOfContents.md le. at it is called Chapter#{NUMBER}.md. at if required, it has screenshots. Ubuntu: A whirlwind tour through the history of the worlds most popular Linux distro.
Travel ba with me to the year 2004. A guy by the name of Mark Shuleworth had been doing something with a bun of Debian Linux (more on that later) developers - they were known as e super secret debian startup. ere was an IRC (internet relay at) annel on Freenode - was known as #weirdos - the team hung out there. e team comprised of folks su as Je Waugh, Robert Collins and om May - Sco James Remnant joined the team shortly thereaer. cong On the 20th of October, 2004, the world anged, just a lile bit. Ubuntu 4.10 was released to the world.
Over the years, Ubuntu got more and more powerful, and more and more popular. I ose those words for a reason - the powerful part is a big thing that people oen forget.
Why would Ubuntu be right for you, and why might it not be right for you?
is is the question of the ages - and the answer doesnt always work for everyone, and it doesnt always work (or evey make sense). However, what follows is my opinion on this topic, and they might be yours. Ubuntu is not for you if You use Adobe products for a living - mainly, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Cut Pro, etc. You are a devout Windows user, and you pay homage to the Blue Screen of death. You work at Microso. You love gaming. Seriously, unless you only play Minecra or Farmville, Ubuntu is not for you. On the other hand, Ubuntu is for you if You are a programmer in Ruby, Python, C++, C, or anything that will probably run on a Linux server. You only play Minecra or Farmville. Youre si of paying homage to the Blue Screen of Death. You dont work at Microso. You are a server administrator. You want to give a new life to a older computer (or two, or three or you get the point) Decided if youre interested in running Ubuntu? Ok, if youre interested, next page please!
