ABST-ACT:
Energy meter is a device that measures the amount of electrical energy consumed by a residence, business or machine. The most common types are properly known as a kilowatt hour meter or a joule meter. The most common unit of measurement on the electricity meter is the kilowatt hour, which is equal to the amount of energy used by a load of one kilowatt over a period of one hour.

In this project we are implementing a prepaid electricity billing system which is based on 8 bit microcontroller. In order to implement this in the e!isting system first we need to have one free billing system. "henever we apply power to the free billing system it converts energy into frequency #pulses$. "e give that frequency to microcontroller and it will be displayed on the %&'. If we want to recharge our energy meter, we need to press a switch #(")$ which will give one interrupt to the microcontroller and automatically the energy meter will get recharged. *y this any system connected can be recharged by simply pressing a switch. +ow a day no one is using this kind of system in India, but in future in order to save the energy and get systems automated there is a scope that we use this type of intelligent system. "astage of power is inevitable in large industries. This is because the e!isting system provides no check on the consumption and therefore there is a tendency to be careless. If there is a system that allots a fi!ed ration of power for a period, then the workers would be more careful thereby minimi,ing the electricity loss.

In this project, the present billing system was eliminated completely and a new system namely prepaid billing system was introduced for embedded applications which overcomes the drawbacks in present billing system. If this system comes into use in our day to day life it will be useful for both the -overnment and the public.
