Launchingthenew1290SuperDukeR,KTMturns2014intoitsnexthistoricmilestone, crowningthereconstructionandexpansionofitsnakedbikerangeheraldedin2011bythe launchofthe125Duke.Atthefirstglance,theaggressivedesignofthe1290SuperDukeR makesabundantlyclear:theKTMdevelopmentengineershaveputtogetheracomprehensive packagethatoutshinesallpreviousstreetfightersandnakedbikesincludingthosemadeby KTMitself.The1290RisthemostextremeSuperDukeeverandmoreradicalthananyofits predecessors.OnlythedegreeofconsistencywithwhichKTMpressesaheadinthe developmentoftheLC8powerplantandthelightweighttrellisframe,andcombinesthemwith highendtechnologyandthelatestelectronics,canyieldthelevelofperformancethatthenew 1290SuperDukeRhastooffer.Atamaxoutputof180hpandonly189kgofweight,itrealises apowertoweightratiopreviouslyreservedformaxedoutsupersportracers.Andwithaloadof thelatestelectronicassistancesystems,itdefinesnewbenchmarksforstreetfightersandnaked bikesintermsofcontrollabilityandsafety. BREATHTAKINGPERFORMANCE Asabaselineforthe1290SuperDukeRsengine,theKTMengineerschosethehighlypotent LC8engineoftheKTMSuperbike1190RC8R.Theythenplacedthefocusofdevelopmentnot somuchonincreasingmaximumpower,whichisplentifulanyway,butonachievinga matchlesstorquedeliveryandmaximumusabilityoftheengineoutput.Indoingso,they managedtopullofftheseeminglyimpossiblebyraisingtheV2selasticitytopreviously unattainedlevelswithoutevenslightlyimpairingitsalmostproverbialspontaneityandresponse. The75V2enginewithelectronicenginemanagementandridebywirefunctionbrings breathtakingperformance,convincingrealworldpracticalityandstraightrazorprecisioninto suchperfectharmonythatitsapplicationsrangefromurbancommutingtotheracetrack,where ithasallthemakingsofapotentialsuperbiketerror. TheFreeride250Rpicksupthesamebasicprinciplesofthisyoungmodelrangebygivinga motorbiketopeoplewhowanttogooffroadwithouthavingtoproveanythingtoanybody. Returningridersareespeciallynotinterestedinbowingdowntoconstraints,butinsteadgaining thewidestrangeofoptions.Theywanttoroamthelandscapefreefrompressurebutatthe sametimerefusetoletthetopographydictatetheroute.Enterthe2strokeengine,whichinthe Freeride250Risnottunedformaximumpowerbutratherforawellbalancedtorquedelivery andoptimumrideability. ENGINE:WELLBALANCEDANDECONOMICAL AsapowerplantfortheFreeride250R,theKTMengineersstartedoutfromthetwostroke engineofthecompetitionenduro250EXC,developingitcomprehensivelyfurther,loweringits weightbyanothertwokilogramsdespiteusinganelectricstarter,andtuningitforoptimum rideability.TheFreeride250Rsenginehasabrandnewcylinderwithportsandtimingsadjusted totheintendedresponse,aswellasamatchingnewpiston.Similartotrialsbikes,the250 EXCscomplexexhaustcontrolvalveisdropped,whichfurtherbenefitsthedesiredtorque delivery.Inallthis,theadvancedtwostrokeenginemakesdowithleanfueloilmixtureratiosthat canbelowereddownto1:80whileconsumingfarlessfuelthanthe250EXC.

FRAME:LIGHTWEIGHTANDCOMPACT WiththeFreeride250Rframe,theKTMdeveloperspulledallthestopstoutilisetheadvantages ofthemorecompacttwostrokeenginetothefullest.Aswiththesistermodels,theframeisa compositedesignmadeoftopqualitystainlesssteelsectionsandboltonforgedaluminium components.ComparedtotheFreeride350sframethough,theengineersmanagedtoraisethe lowercradleby60mmthankstothetwostrokeenginewiththesideexhaust.Thisensuresalot moregroundclearanceanadvantageallthemorebeneficialthetoughertheterraingets, especiallyincombinationwiththeFreerideslargeamountofsteeringlock.

AftersuccessfullyenteringtheMoto3WorldChampionship,whereKTMwonthetitleinitsfirst yearandonceagaindominatedthecurrentseasonandafterlaunchingtheofficialMY2014cup bikefortheADACJuniorCuppoweredbyKTM,itisnowonlylogicalforKTMtoofferstreet legalsportbikesthatbenefitfromthetrackracingexperience,takingGPfascinationtothe streets.2014willalreadyseethreesuchKTMmodelsthatlookasiftheyhadescapedstraight fromtheMotoGPpitlane:theRC125,RC200andRC390.Theprimedevelopmentdirectivefor thenewRCrangewastobuildappealing,topqualitysportmotorbikesthatradiateample excitementwiththeirracingconceptanddesign,theircuttingedgefeaturesandtheiraggressive performancewhileatthesametimedistinguishingthemselveswiththebestpossiblerideability, greatreliability,reasonablepricingandeasymaintenance.Theresult:threeuncompromising, fullyfairedracers,eachofwhichisonlyidentifiableasastreetlegalbikebyitscooldual headlightsandrearviewmirrorswithintegralindicators.
